Hayley Atwell is Peggy Carter in Captain America

Joe Johnston and the folks at Marvel were absolutely determined to find a British Actress to play the part of Peggy Carter, the love interest of the title character in The First Avenger: Captain America and they got their wish.

After reports surfaced a few weeks back that the three names in contention for the lead female role had come down to Keira Knightley, Emily Blunt and Alice Eve, we started to see the choices narrowing. First, rumors pointed at Emily Blunt having been offered the role, but declining for a chance to play Catwoman in Batman 3. Then, we heard Knightley was no longer in consideration but another Brit, Hayley Atwell was. It was now down to Alice Eve and Hayley Atwell but Atwell got the job.

When Atwell’s name was reported to be in the mix for the part, it was mentioned that Alice Eve was actually Marvel’s top choice. Both actresses were called in for a second audition shortly after and we can assume Hayley Atwell blew them away.

Atwell will play the part of Peggy Carter (not Peggy Lee as previously reported) who is Steve Rogers’ girlfriend during World War II. Carter also was an American Agent with the French Resistance and has training as a spy, not afraid to use a gun.

Luckily for us all, the casting process to pick the right Peggy wasn’t nearly as convoluted and lengthy as it was with picking who’d play Captain America. You may not know Atwell yet, but this role were certainly bring her into the world’s spotlight. She can be seen in The Prisoner TV series and next in the Pillars of Earth miniseries. Atwell also had roles in The Duchess and Cassandra’s Dream.

Hayley Atwell joins Chris Evans is Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes and Hugo Weaving is the villainous Red Skull. Are you happy with Hayley Atwell playing Peggy Carter?

The First Avenger: Captain America hits July 22, 2011.

  1. Yeah she's a fine actress(pun intended). She has that Cathrine Zeta Jones type of exotic look. I just wonder how would she look with blond hair it might not look right with her skin tone and features, other than that good choice.

  2. put her in the right dress………and she can have any colour hair she wants :)
I've seen better pictures of her and she is built like a goddess.

I hope she can act but even if she can't , I'll be glad of any screen time she gets :)

  3. Unless her character is immortal, I'm not too worried about her xP

  4. Any word if any of the Defenders will be part of the movie origin? (torch, toro, namor, ms. america, etc)

  5. Well Chris Evans is Capt America ( He was the torch) so there you go…

  6. There are two Human Torches: the Golden Age Human Torch (an android), and the actually-human Human Torch (Johnny Storm), who was a member of the Fantastic Four. Two completely different individuals, but with the same nickname and similar powers.

As for Chris Evans playing the second Human Torch in the Fox movies, that's irrelevant, as they are not part of Marvel's cinematic universe.

  7. Thank you for the Info. I am well aware of the Human Torches (I read Comics as well) I was just making a harmless joke.

  8. Sorry about that, I thought you were being serious!

  10. We don't have to worry about Namor showing up, most people think Fox has his rights to him but they don't. Universal has the rights to Namor and they've had them so long now and haven't done anything with him that I think the rights should have already reverted back to Marvel by now, besides Univesal had the rights to the Hulk and they let Marvel have them back after their failure with him. As far as the T.O Human Torch and Toro, Marvel aught to just change the color of their flames, make one blue and the other one red or even green and give them different abilities.

  11. oh snap, ur right xD
my mistake…u know me being german and all =P

  12. Saw captain America last night. Hayley was amazing! Very beautiful
