Hawkman golden age Hawkman Movie Soon Taking Flight?

The guys over at Collider picked up on a story yesterday that was first floated by Pajiba, regarding DC/WB possibly moving ahead with a Hawkman movie. I don’t really have all that much trust in Pajiba, but Collider‘s report at least warrants us discussing the subject. Good guys over there.

Apparently, since the formation of DC Entertainment earlier this fall, the DCE/WB squad has been working hard on trying to catch up to Marvel in the super hero movie game (makes sense). This is pretty much the point of DCE – streamlining creative properties into profitable multimedia franchises – and reportedly, they are striving to make it happen, including getting some of their second-tier heroes (Hawkman) developed into Iron Man success stories.

Producers like Joel Silver and Akiva Goldman – who have been working with superhero properties for awhile – are being name-dropped as the sort of big guns who will make some of these DCE/WB projects into big screen realities. A few movies that have already gained traction are The Green Lantern, The Flash, Shazam! and the upcoming adaptation of Lobo. Well, Hawkman is now rumored to be on deck for a movie makeover.

Of course, a Hawkman movie is one of those things that’s been talked about by both fans and Hollywood players alike for…ever, maybe. Well before comic book movies blew up during the “oughties,” most of us were already having discussions about seeing our favorite DC superhero(es) on the big screen. “Wouldn’t a ‘Hawkman’ movie be awesome?” was definitely part of the conversation at one point or another.

There have been several versions of Hawkman in comic book lore. Golden Age Hawkman was Carter Hall, an archaeologist who was the reincarnation of an Egyptian god and wore a gravity-defying belt and fake wings. Silver and Modern Age Hawkman stories have revolved around Katar Hol, an alien police officer from a planet of bird-people who is partnered with Shayera Thal, aka, Hawkgirl. Not sure which one of those stories a Hawkman movie would tackle. They both have their downsides, cinematically speaking.

Lastly, Pajiba claims that we will be hearing “major announcements” from DCE/WB early in 2010, likely regarding upcoming superhero movies and projects. We’ll see what develops on that front.

For now, feel free to take this RUMOR as a go-sign for pitching your best Hawkman movie in our comments section. And if you want to see Hawkman definitely appear onscreen in the near future, be sure to check out Smallville’s Justice Society special event, which premieres early in 2010.

  1. “Wouldn’t a ‘Hawkman’ movie be awesome?”

Conan +Indiana Jones+ a litlle bit of Ghost

  2. Oh yeah, give that to Akiva Goldsman! Remember his AWESOME work on “Batman & Robin”? oh yeah, that’s what killed DC’s hero movies in the first place! good idea!!

  3. I think it would be awesome to have a Hawkman film to add to the rest of the DC Comic films. Just Make sure it has the right person to for the lead role, the right supporting cast, script, director, the whole works of-course.

  4. DC is way behind Marvel so they need to start catching up and give us the characters we want to see on the big screen.

  5. Other unlikely films have worked in the past (Hellboy) but right now, all I can imagine are the Hawkmen from Flash Gordon…DIIIIVVVVVEE!!

Who knows, this may end up working…

  6. Carter Hall is appearing on two episodes of Smallville in 2010, so i can see the hype around a possible movie to pick up!! Geoff Johns, who wrote the episodes AND a Hawkman series, would be the right guy to help bring the birdman to life. In the comic book series he did there is a great line, tag line if you will that makes a perfect movie tag line too:

He’s Lived a thousand lives and been a hero in them all!!

on a side note i am glad to see that some other dc heroes are getting some good vibes and news for movies. The movie makers should remember though that we as fans would like another iron man or dark night…not another elektra (as nice as she looked in red)! Dont rush things…

  7. Can’t wait to see Hawkman on Smallville! That mini-movie about the Justice Society (JSA) premieres February 5th! I hope that success propels Hawkman into a full fledged big screen movie.

  8. Guys..what is the difference between HawkEye and Hawkman are they the same character or are they different?

  9. No Brodie Bruce..Im not saying this question with Sarcasim I really dont if they are different characters or the same, believe me if I was a big Marvel Comic fan like most people I believe I wouldnt be asking this.

  10. @jose

Please tell my that Question is Riddled w/sarcasam.

  11. Hawkeye is ClintBarton, an expert archer Marvels Green Arrow.
I think his current identity is Ronin .
Hawkman is a law enforcment officer from the planet Thanagar .
Or at least the modern day version is .

  12. And of course, Hawkman is a DC Character.

  13. hawkman 3d coming in 2012 thanks to the great photorealism but terrible 3d of avatar lol

  14. I still think they need to crawl before they can walk. They have 1 viable superhero movie. Batman.

They still need to get another “main name” if you will before they start all of these “lesser” characters.

Wonder Woman or The Flash comes to mind. Do one of those, do it “right” then work on stuff like “Hawkman, Lobo, etc.”

  15. DC is getting their but kicked by Marvel. They need to get away from WB and make a deal with Paramont. Bring in JJ Abhrams (MI3, ST09) for Wonder Woman, James Cameron (Avatar) for a Green Lantern Corp movie, Stephen Sommers (Mummy) for JLA movie, Kevin Smith (Clerks) for League of Doom, and Steven Spielberg (ET) for FireStorm. They just need to start making as good quality movies and a variety to conteract and compete against Marvel.

  16. I hope they go with the silver age Hawkman Kator Hol from the planet Thanagar because it would be cool to see Hawkman fly his starship which is a Thangarian Star Cruiser and it would be cool to see Hawkman fly it across the galaxy and through hyperspace, visiting alien planets and perhaps even fighting in space battles.
