The Avengers Spin-Off For Jeremy Renner’s Hawkeye? Probably Not

2 years ago by

Jeremy Renner, one of the most sought after men in Hollywood, is a little busy at the moment. He’s playing opposite Tom Cruise in the fourth Mission: Impossible, poised to take over that franchise, while also talking over as leading man in the next Bourne installment. There’s something to be said about him and 4th installments in action movie franchises…

On top of that, Renner also plays a key role in Marvel’s ultimate project, The Avengers, where he cannot avoid questions about the project wherever he goes. While there’s been talk of sequels and spin-offs for every character appearing in The Avengers, Renner can only say the same about his character – that it’s possible.

In an interview while promoting Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, MTV attempted to squeeze some Hawkeye-related info from the actor but Renner responded only by saying the character is a bad-ass Bow-wielding dude and that he couldn’t say anymore than that. When asked about the future of the character, he said he didn’t know, only that it’s “possible” for Hawkeye to get a spin-off. Basically, he said nothing.

Back in May, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige spoke on the potential of spin-off movies for the pair of non-superpowered S.H.I.E.L.D. agents Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye. He said they had chatter with Johansson about story ideas for her character, while they’ve also thought on the potential of Hawkeye on his own. Feige said all of this while emphasizing the idea of telling more stories about SHIELD, the organization behind-the-scenes in the film, orchestrating the formation of The Avengers team.

The SHIELD organization played a prominent role in Thor and they are brought front and center in The Avengers. Nearly two years ago, after Samuel L. Jackson locked in for a long-term 9-picture deal with Marvel Studios, he said in an interview that after The Avengers Marvel may pursue a SHIELD film – that is the more realistic possibility for seeing Hawkeye again before The Avengers 2.

With Marvel Studios having the capacity at the moment for only two feature films per year – we heard they wanted to bump this to four eventually – a Hawkeye or Black Widow solo film isn’t going to happen. With sequels for Iron Man, Thor and Captain America on the way in addition to more Avengers installments and continued talks of Dr. Strange, Black Panther and more, there’s no room to tell a story based on just Hawkeye or Black Widow. There is however, a lot of room to tell a SHIELD story which can run alongside The Avengers. Such a project would include a cast of high profile characters introduced in the films so far – most notably those included in next year’s The Avengers. Such a film could lay down a lot of background on the overarching story The Avengers series plans to tell while at the same time, giving the studio a far more bankable film loaded with an ensemble cast.

Such a film could star Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Sam L as Nick Fury, Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill, Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson and other SHIELD characters expected to be introduced into The Avengers. The casting is already done, along with the character development, costume designs and background on the universe these characters exist in.

The Avengers is by itself next year since Marvel canned Runaways, followed by Thor 2 and Iron Man 3 in 2013, and a pair of unannounced summer blockbusters for 2014 for which Marvel Studios has already claimed dates for. Could one of those be the SHIELD movie? Check out The Avengers trailer for a hint of what will launch the franchise forward.

The Avengers stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Clark Gregg, Tom Hiddleston and Stellan Skarsgard. It is of course written and directed by Joss Whedon, opening in theaters on May 4, 2012.

  1. Thought the two movies for 2014 were Guardians of the Galaxy and The Inhumans?

    • I bet Captain America 2 will be one of those films instead of Inhumans.

      • Either Cap or Iron Man 3.

        • IM3 is already set for May 2013.

    • The 2014 slots haven’t been announced yet.
Personally, I’m hoping it’s NEITHER of those two you just mentioned.
I’m hoping for Cap 2 and either Dr Strange or Black Panther (featuring Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne)

      • Those aren’t my first picks either. I just thought they announced those two movies as two upcoming movies to be made. But They said the said the same thing about Ant-Man and that still hasn’t gotten made so who really knows what they will actually put into production. I’m hoping for Cap 2 and Luke Cage.

        • Isn’t there a Deadpool movie planned for 2014?

          • NOTHING to do with Marvel Studios my friend…

            Fox is developing Deadpool.

            • The Deadpool they’re making a movie about is based on the Marvel comic, not the X-Men version. Deadpool isn’t a part of the X-Men, so it’s probably going to be made by Marvel.

    • No confirmed films for those two days, just speculation.

  2. i would like to see a shield movie just so we can get some back story on this organisation that plays a big part in this universe, of course i could just read the comics, but the movie universe and 616 and ultimate universes aren’t same so i want an official movie universe back story. and of course they need to bring back bucky, we hardly saw the guy in captain america, i want to see some winter soldier

    • I’m all for a SHIELD movie. I’ll see any Marvel Movie as long as they keep putting in the same effort for each film. I love going to the movies personally so I hope they up the Number of films per year if it is at all possible to do so while keeping the quality of the films the same.

Luke Cage is one of the movies I think should get a winter release in 2014 if they do up movies per year. It couldn’t be THAT expensive to make.

      • Hate SHIELD. Too much arrogance, but not enough bad-assery.

Deadpool, Caps2, Ironman and Guardians of the Galaxy would be cool. But the other things listed here. Meh.

  3. I think a S.H.I.E.L.D movie should happen with Jeremy Renner and Scarlett as the main leads and also have Samuel L. Jackson in it with a larger role.

Just look at The Avengers trailer, he looks badass with a grenade laucher and is a popular charcater.

I hope Anget Coulson will be in it too.

  4. I read about this earlier today on another site and I have to say, I’m disappointed (especially when Renner said “You’re not going to see me do another action movie for a while”).

I’m happy that they won’t be doing a Hawkeye spin-off (personally, I think it might be a bit boring) + there are so many other great characters that should be a priory for a film adaption (Black Panther, Dr. Strange, Luke Cage, Ms.Marvel, etc.), but to hear that Renner has no plans for any more action flicks altogether… that’s a bummer (then again, he does have a 9 picture deal with Marvel, if I’m not mistaken, so it’s not like he can just say “no”, am I right?)

I really hope he’ll be back for a possible SHIELD movie, some cameos, and of course Avengers 2.

    • I don’t believe Renner signed a 9-pic deal. Only Sam L has that with the other stars having 6-pic ones (Hemsworth, Evans)

      • Okay, but even it isn’t a nine picture deal, surely he still signed a contract of some sorts (possibly a 3 or 4 picture deal?)

  5. it would be pretty kool to see a spin off movie of hawkeye and black widow or a shield movie it so watch that =D

  6. Wheres the Guyver remake? oh yah and Hawkeye is lame!

    • Hawkeye is NOT LAME!!! Do you have any idea how hard it is to draw a bow, and be accurate? Especially as accurate as Hawkeye? It’s a b****! Take it from an archer who knows. I’ve been shooting for 15 years, and I can promise you that making the kind of shots that he does is hard and impressive. He’s my favorite Avenger, and I will totally watch anything he’s in. A guy with a bow and exploding arrows is so much cooler than an ant man who shrinks and can bite people. Just saying.

      • Heck ya!!!! I agree with you and Hawkeye is my favorite avenger too! I think it would be so cool to be that accurate with a bow and arrow!! Go Hawkeye!!!

  7. I think it’s a little absurd to say there won’t be a Hawkeye spinoff based on no facts. They want to make movies based on other characters but if they don’t like the script for Guardians or Inhumans and Hawkeye turns out to be a favorite character of audiences who do you think they will go with? Also if Marvel decided to make 4 films a year then two of them would probably have lower budgets. That’s what Hawkeye, Black Widow, and Luke Cage would be good for. To me it seems like if you put Fury, Widow, Hawkeye, and Coulson in a movie together as the main characters people will probably see it as an Avengers movie without the big stars, because that’s what it’ll seem like. I’m for a SHIELD movie, but without Hawkeye and Widow.

I’m not saying Hawkeye is a sure thing but if he’s popular who do you think Marvel is going to go with? An already established, popular character who doesn’t need as large of a budget, or a big budget film based on characters audiences and a lot of comic fans don’t know a lot about (Inhumans & Guardians)? It just makes more sense to go with the sure thing.

    • I wish Marvel would do 4 movies a year but I doubt they will. That’s why they’re saying Hawkeye is unlikely to be made. Why go with Hawkeye over Cap 2? They wouldn’t. But I agree that there is money to be made doing 2 high budget films and 2 low budget low special effect movies each year. Luke Cage would do good numbers not as much as say Thor but it would cost about a third of the price to do. I think they could easily make that back in revenue if they even through his name out during one of the higher budget films.

So yeah if they don’t up the amount of movies each year i highly doubt Hawkeye is at the top of their lists.

In a different point I think you’d need Hawkeye in a SHIELD movie, but that’s just my opinion.

  8. The idea of a series of SHIELD movies featuring Black Widow, Hawkeye, Nick Fury and others is an awesome idea!

Marvel could carefully build another franchise through SHIELD and allow them to introduce new Avengers’ members, i.e. Ant-Man, Wasp, Vision, Scarlet Witch!

We should get an Ant-man movie written and directed by Edgar Wright, right?

  9. I wouldn’t mind seeing a Hawkeye solo film (I certainly would prefer it over seeing another Bourne or Mission Impossible film) but I think it’d make a little more sense to have a Hawkeye & Black Widow film or, yeah, a SHIELD ensemble film.

  10. For me a SHIELD movie needs to star SHIELD members from the comics. I love the idea of Hawkeye and Widow being SHIELD agents but I you put them in the movie it seems less like a SHIELD film to me. It should star Fury, Maria Hill and other traditional SHIELD agents, Duagan and Gabe Jones for example(if they brought them into the present). There are plenty of other agents. Sharon Carter could have a cameo.

In the comics SHIELD was created on the success of James Bond. It should have a feeling like that, with high tech gadgets and Fury getting in on the action. SHIELD should battle Hydra, led by Baron Von Strucker (Fury’s arch enemy). There is so much that could go on and so many characters to explore that you don’t need Widow or Hawkeye. If you want to introduce Hank and Jan as scientists though, that’s fine, and a good idea.

Like I said if you put Hawkeye and Widow in the film it just seems less like a SHIELD movie and more like a Hawkeye and Black Widow team up movie, featuring SHIELD.

  11. impecableeee, 100% recomendable, felicitaciones a jeremy renner se merece tener su propia pelicula igual que la viuda negra

  12. I f**king love Hawkeye and hope to see him in a spin-off but will settle for a Avengers 2 as long as it doesn’t take like 7 years for it to come out. Hawkeye is way cooler than Thor or Hulk. Looking forward to Cap 2 and Iron Man 3 aswell.

    • I loooooooovvvvvveeeeee Hawkeye!!!!! And I want to see a Hawkeye/Black Widow movie!!!!!!

  13. I LOVE Hawkeye and Black Widow. I’d watch any movie with Renner in but i think it’d be great to see BW and H team up.
