Jeremy Renner coyly responds to the question of what his MCU future will be after Hawkeye amid lots of fan speculation. Renner joined the MCU ten years ago in Thor, making his debut as Clint Barton in a quick cameo. Since then, he's only appeared in team-up movies like The Avengers and Captain America: Civil WarHawkeye is his very first solo project within the franchise, and it comes just as most original Avengers have taken or are starting to take their victory laps.

Premiering next week on Disney+, Hawkeye picks up with Clint after the events of 2019's Avengers: Endgame. He's been happily reunited with his family and is ready to spend the holidays with them. However, when someone starts masquerading as his vigilante persona Ronin, Clint gets thrust headlong into a new adventure on the streets of New York. As fans already know, that Ronin imposter is actually Kate Bishop (Hailee Steinfeld), and her newfound partnership with Clint causes trouble for the tired Avenger.

As with any Marvel project, fans are curious to know what's coming after Hawkeye. Renner isn't officially slated for any additional MCU projects, which has led some to wonder if the Disney+ series is the last one for him. The actor commented on that in a recent interview with GamesRadar+, admitting that he doesn't know much about what the future holds. Nevertheless, he thinks Hawkeye is the perfect adventure for his character. Renner said:

"I don't have a crystal ball, or I'm not a soothsayer. But having Hailee come in, and these characters, I think it opens it up for six great episodes for this event type of television. After that, I have no idea. But these six episodes are pretty exciting."

Steinfeld's introduction as Kate has partially fueled the idea that Renner's time in the MCU is coming to a close. Several projects in the MCU's Phase 4 have already offered replacements for the original 6 Avengers. For example, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier cemented Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) as the new Captain America, while Black Widow positioned Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh, also set to appear in Hawkeye) as the next step forward in Natasha Romanoff's legacy. In the case of Clint and the mantle of Hawkeye, Kate Bishop is a logical way forward, and this miniseries could act as a grand sendoff for the archer.

At the same time, few actors are truly gone forever when it comes to the MCU. Sure, those like Robert Downey Jr. and Scarlett Johansson have said their goodbyes, but fans have been caught off-guard by more than a few surprise returns. Hawkeye doesn't necessarily need to be the end for Renner; in fact, it could even show a new way forward for him. For his part, Renner either remains in the dark like fans or is being very careful about not revealing anything he does know about his future in the MCU. Perhaps Hawkeye will offer some hints about what lies ahead for this Marvel vet.
