Kurtzman & Orci Bringing Back ‘Hawaii Five-O’

It’s time to dust off your badge, ready your best Jack Lord, “Book ‘em, Dano,” impression and start humming the infamous theme song as criminals of Hawaii now have more to fear than Dog: The Bounty Hunter, as CBS has announced that it’s bringing back the second-longest-running criminal drama, Hawaii Five-O.

Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who brought us Fringe and Star Trek, along with CSI: NY executive producer Peter Lenkov will produce the show for CBS Television Studios with CBS committing to a pilot after hearing a pitch from Kurtzman, Orci and Lenkov last Thursday.

Fans of Fringe need not worry that their favorite science fiction show will go the way of Alias and Lost when J.J Abrams found new projects to focus his attention (Lost has since recovered) as Lenkov will be penning the script with Kurtzman and Orci supervising. Should the show be picked up, Lenkov will serve as the showrunner.

This is not the first attempt from CBS to bring back their long running crime drama. In 1996, Stephen J. Cannell (A-Team, 21 Jump Street) produced a one-our pilot staring Gary Busey (Lethal Weapon) and Russell Wong (The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor). I could only imagine what Buseyisms would’ve come out of that show. “Book ‘em, Dano” – as in D-A-N-O, ‘Dispose All Negative Outlooks.’

Hawaii Five-O was before my time and while I’ve seen a couple of episodes here and there, I can’t really imagine how a reboot, refresh, re-whatever-they’re-calling-it would look. The only thing I could compare it to is CSI: Miami and since that show has become somewhat of a guilty please, I’m somewhat interested in what this will become. You have to admit that with the combination of Alex Kurtzman, Robert Orci and Peter Lenkov one thing they aren’t lacking is talent.
