Hawaii Five 0 season 2 CBS Hawaii Five 0 Season 2: More Characters, New Locales

(If you have yet to see season 1 of Hawaii Five-0, this article may contain spoilers. Read on at your own risk.)

Caught between the demographic stealing Monday Night Football, and the counter-programming of the Nathan Fillion-led hit Castle (ironically on the former home of Monday Night Football), Hawaii Five-0 had its work cut out for it from the get go.

Though the show fell short of becoming the next NCIS or CSI the network was looking for, H50 did manage to earn a solid and loyal fan base – who will no doubt be expecting more from the show’s return this fall.

In keeping with those fans’ expectations, CBS and executive producer Peter Lenkov have big plans for the Hawaii Five-0 team in season 2. With shooting expected to begin sometime in July, the series’ writers have plotted much of the second season – which will not only reconcile the dramatic cliffhanger of the first year finale, but also integrate some new cast members.

When last we saw them, the team had been essentially disassembled. Team leader Steve McGarrett (Alex O’Loughlin) was being led away in handcuffs by Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Day Kim) – presumed guilty of murdering Governor Pat Jameson (Jean Smart). While rookie Kono Kalakaua (Grace Park) was being investigated by internal affairs for her role in some $200,000 that went missing from an asset forfeiture locker earlier in the season – leaving Danno Williams (Scott Caan) the only member of the team capable of clearing McGarrett’s name – at great cost to his personal life.

Lenkov admits the cliffhanger he wrote with Paul Zbsyzewki (Lost), which ended season 1, was done to create a seamless transition into the season 2 premiere.

“…we were writing the finale, and also writing the first episode of Season 2 at almost the same time. In order to put [characters] in those kinds of situations, you have to know the endgame. You can’t just put it in and then paint yourself into a corner and think, ‘How do I get them out?’ But we had all these really strong ideas of what we wanted to do in Season 2, and a lot of it is based on how we leave them at the end of Season 1.”

Without the team together, there isn’t much of a show. Lenkov assures fans that the kind of conflict season 1 ended on can be entertaining (for a short while), but achieving some semblance of normalcy will be the main goal – at least for the first episode.

“There is a resolution at the end of [the first episode], but we still keep a big part of it open. So the team is sort of back together, not really. There are some dynamics that have changed in how they’re going to move forward. There’s also a new governor who’s not going to be as lenient as the last governor, because the last governor had an agenda.”

Obviously a new governor will be sworn in, and have the ability to directly oversee the Five-0 team. While we don’t yet know who will fill the role, Lenkov did let slip some details about the character – and why he or she will create a much different dynamic for Steve McGarrett and his team.

“The last governor gave them full immunity and means, but that was just because she wanted to make McGarrett happy, and she was keeping an eye on him. I think the new governor is sort of more realistic and is going to draw the line — he may give them jurisdiction, but maybe not the immunity and means they had last season. The idea is maybe he’s going to be a little more strict with them.”

That means no more taping grenades to pawn shop doors like in the episode ‘Powa Maka Mona’.

Dr. Max Bergman Hawaii Five 0 season 2 Hawaii Five 0 Season 2: More Characters, New Locales

Masi Oka as Dr. Max Bergman

The upheaval stemming from the events of season 1 won’t be the only thing Hawaii Five-0 focuses on in the upcoming season, Lenkov warns. Unlike other CBS shows, the primary Hawaii Five-0 cast will return entirely – and make a few additions.

“…we’re adding another [member] to this task force. And I’m really excited because there are some major surprises — there’s one in the first episode of the season that I’m hoping is as shocking as the governor being bad. We think it is, but we’re hoping it’s amazing, ‘oh my god, I can’t believe they did that.’ So I’m looking forward to that.”

There is a list of usual suspects, involved briefly during the first season, who seem to be a shoe-in for the new member on the task force – Masi Oka (Heroes) and Larisa Oleynik (Mad Men, Psych) immediately come to mind.

In May, it was announced that guest star Masi Oka was going to be promoted to series regular. Oka will continue to play Dr. Max Bergman, the socially awkward coroner who assisted the team a few times last year. Oka and his character seem like a great fit because what is a CBS cop drama without a quirky coroner to help break up some tension? However, that doesn’t necessarily mean Bergman is the new member of the task force Lenkov was talking about.

Late in the season, McGarrett found himself reluctantly (at first) teaming up with Jenna Kaye (Larisa Oleynik) – who also had a score to settle with Wo Fat (Mark Dacascos). At season’s end, Kaye appeared to have an unofficial role on the team. Will her place be more permanent come season 2, or does Lenkov have a completely new character in mind?

Will Jenna Kaye (Larisa Oleynik) be the new team member in season 2?

Fans may worry that the addition of a new member means less time for the expansion of those with already established, but perhaps underdeveloped, characters. One aspect many thought was missing in season 1 was a good solid storyline for Grace Park. Having had so many amazing episodes of Battlestar Galactica revolve directly around her, being relegated to acting as bait or hacking an ATM security camera seemed to shortchange the actress a bit.

In season 2, Park’s role will increase almost immediately. Lenkov says:

“…we have a really great arc for Kono that starts at the beginning of the year, which we’re excited about because it really gives her a lot of meat.”

Finally, along with the additions and changes to the status quo, the Hawaii Five-0 team will expand their area of influence.

“…we wanted to explore the other islands, and I think we just never got the chance. We’re going to do that this year. We have these little ambitions, and that’s one of them. Because it’s Hawaii Five-0 and not Oahu Five-0, they can go to the other islands. And ultimately we want to explore off the islands. It’s a task force, and the idea is there are no real boundaries for them.”

It’s hard to say if all these changes and additions will result in a better Hawaii Five-0. But with a show like this, more might just work out for the better.

Hawaii Five-0 returns to its regular time, Mondays @10pm on CBS this fall.

  1. Bad ideas, all of them. Your show will be cancelled within a year!

    • Lee you need to get over yourself and give ppl a chance this is definatly the best show on tv now and from the past couple of years. If you dont like the show then dont watch it !!! Theres no need to post negative things about it !!!

    • Lee! what are you thinking? Hope you’re ok there :)

  2. Lee – you’re wrong. Come back one year from now and we’ll tell you again. This show is destined to be on for years. You need a vacation to Hawaii to chill out.

    • More like CBS is only keeping it on long enough to get enough episodes for syndication. They want to get a return on their investments. That would only mean keeping it on the air for four years, not several. The show didn’t get the high ratings they were hoping for, and CBS regretted some of its casting for the show.

  3. This article is a little unfair. HFO actually did great numbers wise. It can’t be the new NCIS as it is on at ten pm. For a ten pm show it did very well, only really The Mentalist regularly beat it. It actually beat Castle when you take the full season into account. It also had to deal with 2.5 men imploding and going into re-runs and having a bad lead in.

The show has had great numbers for a first season. And NCIS actually did much worse than HFO has so far. It was only in season four that NCIS became a huge hit. Similar with Criminal Minds. It remains to be seen however whether HFO will do the same or just be another CSI New York type show. Solid but not huge. It’s too early to tell but numnbers wise being the number one new drama of the season is pretty good!

    • hillary, you need to spend more time watching the show than working your spreadsheet!

  4. I love the show, but I have a problem with the constant background noice in most scenes. There is so much background noise that it is often difficult to understand the dialogue of the actors. We really don’t need that much reality noise.

    • duh! a cover for lousy dialogue and story line. take a moment and think about how much “storyline” takes place in the chevy camaro (or whatever). this show hasn’t had a decent script since the first 1-3 episodes.

i hope you get your life back in order soon.

    • I agree. Except for Scott Caan and Joe White, the actors whisper against loud background “music.” I cannot hear what they say and just look for the cinematography. Can the actors be taught to talk from the diaphram? Give them singing lessons and have them practice at a Waikiki karaoke. An Island accent of someone who can sing and really talk is much better than whispers.

  5. BS!! this show is going down the CRAPPER big time!!

  6. I am watching from Australia so have only just seen the first episode with that new member and I am heartsick. I don’t like her, I don’t like the dynamic she brings to the team, why do people have to screw with things that work? What I loved about the team was that they had this fantastic relationship/dynamic. Now there is this new blond female Danny type person trying to banter with McGarrett (and from what I’ve read she is a possible love interest), I think this was really the wrong way to go. This show had a lovely off beatness to it, the characters were quirky and not main stream, but you’ve brought in a totally generic mainstream person and it just doesn’t fit. I guess my comments will do no good, so I’ll vote with my remote and stop watching. BTW this is no comment on the new actress, she is probably great, just not for this show.

  7. People take it far to seriously. Get a life. It’s tv program not a religion.

  8. When is it due on British tv?

  9. Everyone wants this to be another CSI or NCIS, but why does it have to be? Why can’t it just have its own identity? CBS made a bold move in revamping a classic. I mean, it would seem to be an almost impossible task to try and make an updated version of arguably the greatest cop drama of all-time, and for the show to be doing as well as it is is a testament to all the actors involved. I don’t see where Alex O is such a horrible actor.

Everyone on the show does a great job, and I look forward to it each and every week. As a fan of the original, I didn’t think I’d like it, but right now, it’s the only must see television show in my life these days.

  10. Hi! I LOVE Hawaii Five-O! I watch it so much I even watch re-runs!I love Scott and ALEX<33My dream is to met yall, it would make my life!!

  11. hey i love the ideas and i cant wait for the new season and how steve gets out that sticky situation in the end of season one whats gonna happen to wo fat and who is the new govoner and does he or she have a hidden agenda like govoner jamsen

  12. I am so excited just can’t wait hehe: ) xxxxxx

  13. great show,am just crazy about it.i used to watch the original one in late 70s&1980,it was great either.
keep up the good work CBS

  14. The first season of Hawaii 5-0 was great. I like the story lines however, you said you were increasing Kono/grace parks role but instead you decreased her role. I know she isn’t full Hawaiian but looks it. It appears you are going the typical Hollywood downfall rout, you added the obligatory blond hair blue eye female. Next marry off Chin /Daniel Kim and reduce his role to family life while you replace it with another full blooded white character. Change the name to California 5-0. You’re screwing this up, keep with the original theme that is why Jack Lord and the crew were so successful. (HAWAII 5-0)!

  15. love the show sooooooo much cant wait for the next episode. keep up the good work.x

  16. best show ever cant wait to see the next season.x

  17. What month does season 2 start up this year

  18. When will the re-runs stop? So far in 2012, all we see are re-runs, implying that the series has ended and no longer worth our time to watch.

  19. I love it, watched the entire season, bought the first season on DVD and watched it again! I can’t wait for season 2. What’s with all the negativity, if your not a fan don’t bother making digs at others because they enjoy it. Everything’s personal, so if anything, you negative people need to get a life if all you can do is bring down peoples views and opinions on a program they enjoy.

  20. I am a huge fan of H5O. I loved season 1 and loved season 2 even more because of the Lori/Steve storyline. I feel H5O is a well written action series but I feel the personal life events are very important also. I am so disappointed they had Lori’s character leave, that it is going to be hard to finish the season without her. I was so drawn into their getting together and then they pulled the plug. I think many of the H5O fans enjoy only the action aspect of the show, but I feel it completes it with personal stories as well. Please, please bring our girl back as she is a beautiful talented actress who deserves to be with our handsome action hero Steve.

    • I am so very glad that Lauren German is gone. She has no talent, no face, nothing. She had been a negative factor for the show.

    • Ever since Lauren German joined the show, I lost most of my interest in it. I had been waiting for her 11 episodes to be completed so she could be gone for good. Then I was also worried sick that she might stay. Now that she is indeed gone for good, I am back to the show with full enthusiasm. Lauren German has no talent, no expression, no character but sign of arrogance. Compared with Grace Park, Lauren German was nothing but a spoiler in the show. Thank God she is gone. Hope she would go someplace else and never returns to Hawaii Five 0.

  21. I sooo love hawaii five 0.. Ths z tha best seriez eva…! I lav t..i realy adore it!

  22. Hawaii Five-O is just great with its original cast, IMO. Though I am fine with some characters being introduced FROM TIME TO TIME to help some of their storylines. The original cast plus a well-thought of, well-developed plot for every episode, this tv series will definitely see more seasons.

  23. Would love to see Alex put some flesh in his body, though. He’s getting thin.

  24. I like the show but my husband agree that we can’t hear the dialogue with so much background noise. He just said he wasn’t going to watch it anymore. I wonder how many others feel the same.
