Whenever Quentin Tarantino comes out with a new movie, it’s always going to be an event. His latest film, The Hateful Eight, is no different, but there is definitely some added value if you watch the “Roadshow” edition when it’s released this Christmas.
Tarantino wanted to create an experience that moviegoers today just don’t get with modern movies. He wanted to make The Hateful Eight using the Ultra Panavision 70 format, which gives a film the widest image possible on the big screen at 70mm, and he wanted to give movie fans a special “roadshow presentation” with an overture at the beginning of the film and an intermission in the middle (just like Ben-Hur and Cleopatra were released back in the day). While the roadshow edition of The Hateful Eight clocks in with a running time of 187 minutes, there are now 8 minutes of footage released with new clips online.
The clip above (hat tip to JoBlo) is the opening of The Hateful Eight. Major Marquis Warren (Samuel L. Jackson) is a former Union soldier turned bounty hunter, who wants to hitch a ride on a stage coach with fellow bounty hunter John Ruth (Kurt Russell) and his latest capture Daisy Domergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh) in the dead of winter. Major Warren wants to turn in the bounty on three criminals in Red Rock, but he needs to make to Minnie’s Haberdashery just before a terrible blizzard hits.
The next two clips feature Major Warren, Ruth, and Daisy in the stage coach when they meet Chris Mannix (Walton Goggins), the new sheriff of Red Rocks and former southern renegade. Once the four of them meet four other individuals at Minnie’s Haberdashery, they all realize they have one deadly connection to each other.
The next clip features General Sanford Smithers (Bruce Dern) of the Confederate Army. Mannix knew about General Smithers during the Civil War, while Smithers is visiting Minnie’s Haberdashery before he goes to his son’s grave. The also meet Joe Gage (Michael Madsen), a quite cowboy who was held up at the cabin before he went to his mother’s for Christmas.
One of the caretakers of Minnie’s Haberdashery is Bob (Demián Bichir), who is simply known as “The Mexican.” Bob meets Major Warren while the pair lock up the horses, just before the blizzard hits. The last person we meet in the clips is Oswaldo Mobray (Tim Roth), who is the hangman of Red Rock. He was caught at Minnie’s Haberdashery just before he was supposed to be at Red Rock for Daisy’s hanging.
As the movie unfolds, the characters realize that one of the people inside of the cabin is not who they say they are, as paranoia takes over. Can the titular hateful eight all make it to Red Rock after the blizzard ends three days later? Well, you’re just going to have to wait and find out when the new Quentin Tarantino movie opens this Christmas.
The Hateful Eight opens in a limited release in glorious 70mm on December 25th, 2015. It will open wide a few weeks later on January 8th, 2016.
