Warner Bros. is trying to hop on the 3D bandwagon by releasing the two-part Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in 3D, reports Heat Vision Blog.

This news comes on the heels of a recent rumor that WB is also debating converting the upcoming Clash of the Titans remake to 3D, a decision that is expected to be finalized by week’s end.

So let’s get down to the ins and outs of all this, shall we?

James Cameron has successfully ushered in the official “era of 3D cinema” thanks to Avatar‘s current status as the top-grossing film of all time. Now every blockbuster movie is being considered for 3D and that trend is unlikely to alter course anytime soon.

Deathly Hallows, it must be understood, is being considered for conversion into 3D – it will not be filmed with 3D cameras as Avatar was. The 3D conversion process is becoming more and more affordable; Heat Vision Blog has the expense tagged at $5 million for movie conversion and $5 million for the glasses, per pic. The returns on the higher ticket prices for 3D films can be well worth the trouble (as Avatar has proven).

Clash of Titans would also be a 3D convert (it was also not filmed in 3D) and its release date would likely be pushed back to accommodate the change (only about a week or so, though, no worries). While people are currently awed by the Avatar experience (the ones not hating, at least) already a faction of “3D purists” are decrying films that are retroactively trying to go 3D (myself included). The reason? Unless a film is conceived in 3D from the outset (like Avatar or Pixar’s Up) the technique is often used as a gimmick that does little to enhance the film (or justify the hiked ticket price).

So what do you think about seeing Deathly Hallows converted to 3D? Yes? No? Maybe so?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I hits theaters on November 19, 2010; Part II will be released on July 15, 2011. We’ll keep you updated on what happens with Clash of the Titans.

  1. “So what do you think about seeing Deathly Hallows converted to 3D? Yes? No? Maybe so?”

Ugh, no thanks. I'm not wild about 3D so I'll be watching it in 2D.

  2. I'm a fan of 3D but I don't believe that after the fact conversion can look anywhere near as good as a film shot using the equipment. Same goes for IMAX.

  3. I'm against Deathly Hallows being in 3D. All the other Harry Potter films were done in 2D, so watching the last two films in 3D would break the continuity the other films established.

  4. Heat Vision took it from Marketsaw. Just thought Ide throw that out there and support Jim Dorey.

  5. I'm with you on this one, Vic.
I think that besides the fact that it won't look as good, for a movie to be in 3D it should be planned and executed so from the start.

They shouldn't remember halfway that riding the Avatar train of 3D may give them extra bucks. If they wanted it 3D they should have thought about it before and make the most of the technology.

Besides, I still believe they haven't nailed a Harry Potter movie in 2D, so..

  6. Sounds like they are converting to 3D just to jack up the prices .
This and the inevitable flops of films that never should have been 3D in the first place
will keep 3d from permanently replacing 2D.
    for awhile?
    Yes.
    Permanently?
    No.

  7. It will be just like the other movies that are converted. Saw the 3d preview to Alice in Wonderland that is converted and the 3d in it looked pretty good to me. Any technology will only get better if they use it, same goes for conversion. Using it helps to bring short fallings to light which in later attempts can be improved. Considering the demand for 3d theaters to be installed around the world like what happened in Dunedin New Zealand, 3d is on the map for the next several years. Many said just a few months ago the the Avatar 3d screens would flop. Instead it received 80% of the gross from 3d screens. Even with the higher ticket price, that is still a lot of tickets.

  8. Aaron exactly what i thought these films are my most anticipated ever I mean its been building up to this for 10 years now please please please no 3D or at least a regulear version as well please.

  9. 3D will be here as long as it is profitable
the problem will be that every studio will want to be the one that produces the next Avatar,
So they will produce everything they can in 3D including things like The Three Musketeers which doesnt need 3D and there will bombs ,
How many I dont know but there will be some.
    And if it adds up,
after awhile the 3D boom will slow down.

  10. I completely agree. I didn't enjoy the 3D experience of Avatar. I pretty much wholeheartedly agree with Roger Ebert's assessment of 3D: It dims your vision too much and mutes your color scheme.

I think 3D is here to stay, but for vibrant, colorful films like “Up” and “Avatar”, I am sticking with 3D until the glasses are nolonger tinted. Now TR2N Legacy on the other hand, I will see that in 3D!

  11. I'm a fan of Harry Potter and I will not be watching Part 1 in 3D. On the other hand, I am hoping that Part 2 will befilmed in 3D like Avatar and benefit from it. I'll watch the final film in 3D but I don't think it needs it, the films were making enough money on their own in 2D!

  12. These movie studios are so stupid. Just because Avatar has done so well while being in 3-D means nothing. People didn't go to see the film because it was in 3-D, the 3-D just heightened the experience, didn't change the fact that the film was great. I have a bad feeling to many new movies will be filled with useless, forced 3-D scenes and it will make movies cheesy.

  13. These studios are filled with idiots. Avatar is doing incredibly but not because of the 3-D, it's because the film is great. 3-D just heightens the experience, the film is great with or without it. I don't see a crappy film trailer then here “in 3-D” and suddenly want to watch it.

I fear to many new movies will be diluted with pointless, forced 3-D scenes making the film cheesy and less appealing. Not to mention 3-D makes directors and writers to incorporate 3-D plausible scenes just for the fact.

I really wish these studios will realize that it don't matter if you have 3-D, people are going to flock like they did to see avatar for a movie like “Gigli 2″. (god help us if that is ever actually created).

  14. “In a world, where 2D no longer exists, one boy, one toilet, must conquer all… Harry Potter and Stench of the Deathly Lavoritory Chamber… In 3D.”

  15. A lot of these movies are just smoke screening the quality of the films themselves with 3D so you can kinda see past how crappy they really are because of the 3D effect hypnotizing you with it's subliminal messages.. (Buy more $7 popcorn, buy more $5 Twizzlers…)…(this movie is great… this movie is very..good..buy dvd too..) The Harry Potter movies are going down in quality so I can see why Daniel Radcliffe is practically wanting to do porn now. Now they want to do 3D cuz they know they're pushing out crap now. Only certain movies should be done in 3D. What next “The Passion of The Christ” reboot in 3D and IMAX.?

  16. Sorry about the double post above, I posted once but it looked like it never worked so I re-did it.

  17. Why they are moving in 3D now???

  18. NO.

This is just getting silly, not every film is cut out to be in 3D, none of the other Harry Potter flicks were done like this.
And it will only be 3D conversion, so it wont exactly look like Avatar will it?

Typical jumping on the current bandwagon Hollywood. I'm waiting for Pride And Prejudice 3D

  19. honestly i doubt 3d will replace 2d simply because there's no reason for every movie to be in 3d. Can anyone honestly tell me they would have enjoyed seeing the new tobey mcguire movie brothers in 3d

  20. I wish Emma Watson was doing porn…

  21. I added a link to Market Saw as well.

  22. Me too! She's ripe enough now. LOL!(salivating)

  23. Hey could start putting out some quality porn with 3D glasses included! Now I'd buy that!!!

  24. I LOVE THAT IDEA! why not at least just for this once…
hey support final Harry POtter on 3D by clicking and signing hello…
oh hey you might want to signed the petition for HP on 3D http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/HPDH3d

  25. ey, come on guys…i'm sure when they do 3D there will be non=3D…this one's for the 3D believers for HP

  26. come on, why does everyone thinks HP is doing 3d just because avatar made it to top…as all of you know..,all HP was on Top 25 on all-time-box office hits without 3D….
i'm an avatar lover but i think they should look at the tickets they sold not on gross…and i hate titatic, duh!

i've grown up watching HP and it wouldn't hurt if they do at least one of it..since it's the final…

  27. You don't have to watch it in 3d, watch it in 2d if this makes you happy…….

  28. You people are making to big a deal of this. With newer technology coming out 3D has allready started to be mastered and science and technology have allready started working on 4D which is the new Dimension humanity is moving in. Im sure you will have the choice to watch in 3D or to not. There are billions of people in the world, and not every one of those billions think alike.
