In the Harry Potter series, Hermione and Ron are the most notable couple that fans think about. While Harry and Ginny might get together later in the books, and some of the adults and their relationships are talked about, Hermione and Ron’s relationship is developed most over the series and given a big payoff.

However, while many fans love them together and see them as soulmates, others find them to be awful together and don’t think they would realistically have worked as a couple.

Awful Together: They got in small arguments all the time

Ron and Hermione might have been really close friends, but they also got into tiffs constantly. Both of them could be at fault in turns, and their fighting was often because they had very different personalities.

They approach the world quite differently, and they are always getting under one another’s skin. While they might have been young, it’s hard to imagine these differences would completely go away in adulthood.

Soulmates: Because they always tried to save one another

Both of these characters went through some pretty traumatic things over the course of the seven books. They both were put in dangerous situations in the fight against Voldemort, and they always had one another’s backs.

One example of this is when Hermione is petrified and Ron, as well as Harry, is deeply upset and committed to figuring out how to help her. These two were both very emotional at the thought of the other being hurt.

Awful Together: Ron didn’t support S.P.E.W.

One of Ron’s biggest flaws in the series is that he just accepts how many things are in the wizarding world and doesn’t question injustice unless it’s really obvious. So, when Hermione is rightfully upset about the way house-elves are treated, it’s rather disappointing that Ron doesn’t care and thinks she’s being annoying.

While he eventually comes around a little bit, this is one area where they approach the world very differently, and it’s hard to imagine Hermione being okay with this discrepancy.

Soulmates: They encourage one another

While Ron wasn’t perfect, and Hermione wasn’t either, they did have times where they encouraged one another. It’s true that sometimes they would say the wrong thing or needle each other a bit, but, when it came down to it, they were there to offer support.

Ron was often awed by Hermione’s intellect, and Hermione always encouraged Ron when his self-confidence was low.

Awful Together: Ron blamed Hermione for Scabber’s death

While these two had a variety of fights during their time at Hogwarts, one of the worst happened during their third year. Ron blamed Crookshanks for Scabber's death, and, even if the cat had killed Scabbers, it wasn’t right how he took it out on Hermione.

She couldn’t be expected to keep a cat completely under control, and the way Ron took his anger out on her says a lot about how he handles his emotions.

Soulmates: They always forgave one another

These two definitely didn’t have a perfect friendship, and Ron especially was quite emotionally immature about things. However, one reason why they can be seen is soulmates is that they always forgive one another.

Despite their fights and issues, they both would eventually come around. When push came to shove, no matter what happened, they had one another’s backs.

Awful Together: Hermione attacks Ron with the bird spell

Ron treated Hermione pretty horribly at times when his jealousy got in the way. He lashed out at her over Krum and was overall rude anytime any other boy showed an interest in her. So, on his end, these behaviors don’t bode well for their success as a couple.

Hermione, for her part, shouldn’t have attacked Ron with the bird spell no matter how upset she was.

Soulmates: They went through so many things together

Given how many scary and traumatic events the trio went through together, it makes sense that they would be bonded together for life. While Ron and Hermione’s bonds with Harry were deep but platonic, their romantic feelings for one another made their bond very real in a dating way.

Given the things they had survived together, it makes sense they would always feel loyal to one another.

Awful Together: Ron abandon Hermione during the search for Horcruxes

Probably the worst thing Ron ever does in the series is to leave Hermione and Harry alone during the search to destroy all of the Horcruxes. While Ron might be mad at Harry, he puts Hermione in a horrible position by making her choose between the two of them.

It’s a moment where Ron shows the ugliest sides of himself, and while everyone makes mistakes, it wasn’t a good look.

Soulmates: Because they both had crushes on one another for a long time

Having a crush on someone doesn’t automatically make them your soulmate, but there's something quite endearing about how the feelings between these two developed over time and with age.

They both had crushes on one another that they didn’t quite recognize at first, and as they got older, those feelings deepened.
