Update: Now we have a SECOND official image from the film!

Harry Potter fans are going to have a good 2010. In addition to the opening of Universal’s Harry Potter theme park, fans will get to finally see the first installment of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, the seventh and final book in the Harry Potter series. Directed by David Yates, who also directed the fourth and fifth films in the franchise, Deathly Hallows will show Harry, Ron, and Hermione facing their most difficult challenges yet, as the evil Lord Voldemort is threatening much of the wizarding and muggle worlds.

In a recent article for USA Today, Yates expanded on his desire to make part one of The Deathly Hallows more realistic.

“It’s going to feel very real. We’re going for a vérité approach. Being away from Hogwarts, they’re like these three refugees on the run. They’re out in the big bad world, facing real danger, unguarded by those wonderful benign wizards at Hogwarts. They don’t have a home to go to. We’re kind of pulling away from the magic a bit and bringing more reality to it.”

The article also included some quotes from Rupert Grint (who plays Ron Weasley in the films) describing how Ron, Harry, and Hermione are forced to rough it in the real world.

“They’re paranoid,” says Grint. “It’s quite a scary world because the Snatchers and Death Eaters are running around everywhere. Harry, Ron and Hermione are just camping out in random places, living rough, in regular clothes.”

But what good is talking about teenage wizards looking disheveled when you can actually see them? Along with the USA Today piece was the first official picture from Deathly Hallows. Check it out below. To see a larger version, courtesy of ComingSoon.net, click on the image.

In addition to the news that Deathly Hallows will be a bit more gritty and realistic, David Yates also shared some rather, shall we say, revealing news about the film in an interview with Video Business. In the interview, Yates shared that Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe will appear naked, saying, “a horcrux [carrying a piece of Voldemort’s soul] defends itself by producing nightmarish visions, and one shows Hermione and Harry embracing and kissing…It’s something intriguing and sensual for Rupert to react to, and Dan will be bare for that.”

It wont’ be the first time Radcliffe has shed clothing for a part (there was much ado over his nakedness in the West End stage production of Equus), and I can’t imagine it will be anything worth cringing about (the movie will undoubtedly be aiming for a PG rating), but it will still be interesting to see how people, parents in particular, react to the scene.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been almost two and a half years since the final installment of J.K. Rowling’s incredible Harry Potter series hit bookstore shelves. Rather than wallowing in sadness and self-pity over the end of an era, however, Potter fans from around the world continued to show an unprecedented enthusiasm for their favorite teen wizard, making the film adaptation of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince the eighth highest-grossing film in history. (Fun Fact: Each of the six Harry Potter films holds a spot on the top 25 list of all time worldwide box office grosses.)

What do you think of the first picture? Are you excited to see Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows? Does Potter nudity make you wary?

Part One of Deathly Hallows will hit theaters on November 19, 2010. Fans will have to wait until July 15, 2011 for Part Two.

  1. Is Emma Watson going to be naked? I do hope so.

  2. the last one was pathetic adaptation of the book , this one will be worse

  3. Seriously, who cares if he’s naked or not? As long as it’s tasteful and not explicit I don’t mind. And since the movies are made for a younger audience I’m guessing on the former.

I am a bit unsure about it being less magical and more realistic since I love the magic element in the films. But having read the books I know that the last movie is going to be full of magic. So I guess I can deal.

  4. In regards to it being a younger audience that just isnt true, the book was first published over ten years ago, most of the kids who grew up reading those books are in late teens early twenties.

  5. I’m not liking what I’m reading. More real? One reason I watch HP is because of the wizardry. I don’t want real, I want magic.

  6. I think maybe being more gritty and realistic will add to the magic aspect as well. If your seeing things that are magic but you could possibly imagine them being real is maybe what the are going for, i hope. Potter nudity, could be a tad awkward, not sure if i remember that in the book. Hopefully they can excite the MASSIVE amount of dialogue thats in the Deathly Hallows book. Screw the kids i want Harry Potter fight and death scenes, i was very disappointed in the last film with them leaving out the whole fight scene in the castle and Lupin almost being killed.

  7. I cant wait I love these movies they are so creative. And man emma watson is looking hotter by the day.

  8. I wouldn’t be so sure that they are aiming for a PG rating for this movie. It’s one of the darkest books and the 4th and 5th movies were PG-13. They have definitely proved that they can make an amazing movie while keeping a PG rating, but I think it’s possible they’ll go for PG-13. Especially for the second part. If Part 2 isn’t PG-13 they can’t have the awesome line Mrs. Weasley screams at Bellatrix in the big final battle!

  9. I wouldn’t be too worried Kahless, there are plenty of scenes that are gonna be chock full of wizardy goodness. I don’t want to get into spoiler territory but there should be plenty of opportunity of the special effects guys to spread their wings. The book moves from one narrow escape to another after the first opening chapter. There is a lull in the middle as our intrepid three try to figure out the set of puzzles before them. That’s the price you pay for having plot tho ;-)

  10. Ok… Y is Daniel gonna be naked again?? This makes no sense 2 me n it sure isn’t in the book….

  11. Who cares about Radcliffe, I'd say more are interested in whether Emma Watson will aslo be baring for the role. This one young woman who has, shall we say blossomed into a lovely young lady?
