We certainly didn’t see this one coming: Warner Bros. has announced that it will NOT be releasing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 in 3D, despite the technology being more popular than ever.

An official announcement from WB states that the studio has decided against releasing at least the first part of Deathly Hallows in 3D because there isn’t enough time to get the post-production conversion done in time for the November 19th release date.

It appears that the studio doesn’t want to put out an inferior product by rushing the 3D (a la Clash of the Titans), and are instead interested in giving the best version possible, even if that means just releasing the film in regular old 2D.

A statement from the studio reads:

“Despite everyone’s best efforts, we were unable to convert the film in its entirety and meet the highest standards of quality. We do not want to disappoint fans who have long-anticipated the conclusion of this extraordinary journey.”

Despite 3D arguably offering the biggest spectacle possible for the Harry Potter franchise, I can’t be the only one overjoyed at the fact that the studio is deciding to put quality before anything else. If Clash of the Titans taught us anything, it’s that rushed 3D conversion doesn’t offer the best possible viewing experience of the format.

Deathly Hallows director, David Yates, added his own thoughts on the situation:

“For 10 years, we have worked alongside Alan Horn and the studio, whose priority has always been to preserve the integrity of Jo Rowlingโ€™s books as we have adapted them to the screen, and this decision reflects that commitment…ย This decision, which we completely support, underscores the fact that Warner Bros. has always put quality first.”

At the end of the day, the 3D is just part of the reason fans may be looking forward to the final Harry Potter installments. And even if you’re still desperate for Harry Potter 3D action, then you can rest assured that the final final film, Deathly Hallows Part 2, will hit theaters in both 2D and 3D as planned. The reason for that is WB has nine months to take the time on the conversion of Part 2 to 3D.

As for Part 1, you can still enjoy it in both regular theaters and in IMAX so there’s still plenty of fantastic spectacle to go around.

Are you upset or relieved it won’t be coming at us in 3D?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 will hit theaters (only in 2D) on November 19th, 2010, with Part 2 following next summer (in both 2D and 3D) on July 15th, 2011. Click here for our Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows review.

  1. Iam so pissed i wanted to see it in imax 3D (ive never been to an imax showing) and i wanted to go on this one now i have to wait for part 2 :( And i hope it can still cross the billion mark *fingers crossed*

    • I saw “The Dark Knight” at an IMAX theatre and I didn’t like it. Both the experience and the movie. I kept having to move my head side to side to see the whole picture. It was annoying.

  2. I’m soooooooooooooooooooooooooooo happy about this.

    • same here DSB…no need for 3D

    • Don’t really see how it would have affected you anyhow, just don’t go to a 3D showing… Not exactly hard, they even separate them on the showtime board for you, lol.

But anyway, I think converted 3D movies look like crap anyway, the only way I’ll be half interested is if it’s actually shot in 3D…

    • Why am I not surprised that you’re happy about this Dr.?

  3. Very glad they are not using cheap theatrics. 3D does nothing to improve my movie going experience.

  4. Well i know its going to be an amazing film either way,i just want it to cross the billion mark. Ill just see it in regular imax. Oh and WB has to edit their trailers and posters etc and cut the 3D parts out lol

    • LOL i dont know what to think of WB…i mean sometimes they seem greedy others, they seem like they care about us.

      • They provide us with Potter and Batman and Smallville, I dont care if they’re greedy, just as long as they keep making things I wanna see.

        • LOL so true ๐Ÿ˜‰

  5. As a Harry Potter fangirl I can say that I would have actually welcomed a 3D version but I’m actually really happy that quality is being put first. This is great news

      • Ah yes. The muggle lunatic. Beware, for he lurks around every corner.

        • Iam LORD VOLDEMORT you folks must be talking about some other fan… ๐Ÿ˜€

          • Sorry fella, but simply ain’t cool enough to be He Who Must Not Be Named.

            • ahahahahha Sam!

            • I can be VOLDEMORT if i want…iam fearce when i want you know…iam very powerful *smiles* You are a meer muggl is all *laughs*

            • DSB…get a straight jacket for dear ricky, he’ll be missed….

              • IAM IMMORTAL ๐Ÿ˜€

              • He shall be taken, prepare a sedative…

                • me thinks that he’s been exposed to the Scarecrows hallucinogenics

                  • Makes a perfect kind of crazy sense.

                    Paging Dr Jonathan Crane

                    • No you muggles are under the confundus charm…you need to realize that dark days are amongst us…

  6. This is the best news yet! Thank you, who ever made the decision to ‘not’ 3D this one. I am so done with 3D movies. Great read! This was the best news I heard all day.

  7. Thank you Warner Brothers for thinking of the fans! Less than a year between Part 1 and Part 2 and now no horrible 3-D to contend with. Whoo Hoo!

  8. wow..i thought the Pot-heads would go nuts because its not in 3D lol…what a change of events

    • lol pot-heads….

  9. Aahhi was totally going to make this my first Harry Potter experience,,,

    Screw it now. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    • lol!!!! 790, u really make me laugh

      • 790

        Why not? You like 3D?

          • LMAO im just kidding Ants!!!

            • um just kidding about what?

              • *sigh* i knew he was being sarcastic!!

    • Awww come on! Just go–check it out. If you want, I will go with you and hold your hand so you won’t be a-scared :)

      jk, jk, lololol

  10. Good decision. I don’t like the Harry Potter movies, but this is a good move by WB. Hope everyone stops this post-production 3D conversion.
They say 3D is popular these days, but every person I’ve met says they think it’s completely unnecessary. Don’t know where these ‘3D is popular’ statistics come from.

    • blame James Cameron

      • :)

  11. Thank god there putting quality over cheap 3d gimmicks!!! the movie will still be awesome!!! i mean come on its freakin harry potter. they should really scrap part 2 in 3d as well. its going to look just awful.

  12. AIDYs, I don’t hold hands,,,

    • hahahahahah

    • ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

      • I hold hands! *raises hand and blushes* ๐Ÿ˜Ž

        • Redemption!

          • ๐Ÿ˜€

  13. I hate to break hearts but I’m a cold bastard.

    • @790 -sigh- Hey, you finished Reach yet?

    • We all know that no need to remind us…lol

  14. AIDYs, I’m on the last level. Level 10. I’m running with the package,,,

I’m at Warrent Officer, 1st grade in rank and have about 54000 points.

    Thanks for asking,,,

So far loving the challenge of Legendary mode.

    • I am still working on that fool thing! I’m a Sgt. First Grade (grr). I stopped playing for awhile…I need to pick it back up.

    • Legendary mode? Are you mad?!?

  15. I’m glad that this is being done (Dr. Sam Beckett now you can actually watch it!), but remember, part two will still be in 3D.

Big question though, WB said that they didn’t have enough time to do the conversion, wern’t they supposed to start doing that since June when they finished shooting?

    • Im not sure but i think when part 2 is about to release, part 1 will be 3D it will re-release,i think its gonna happen..

      • You might be on to something there. I never thought of that, but it makes total sense financially: Release Part 1 in 2D then work on the conversion of BOTH after that up until the release of Part 2 in 3D. But before that comes out RE-RELEASE Part 1 in 3D as well. And people will go see it so they can have it fresh in mind for part 2 (I could totally see WB put on showings of Parts 1 and 2 back-to-back in 3D as well).

        • I hope they do not transition to 3D. This 3D fascination is right up there with smell-o-vision. Movies just don’t need that! Okay…I will admit, Avatar was worth it only because it was formatted from start to finish for 3D.

Unlike ‘Clash of the titans’ omg, that was a terrible film *gags*

          • Yes Ross,im actually pretty sure theyre gonna do this…

        • Well they do it for twilight on the day it premiers, and since its a two parter they’ll definitely do it, and in 3D.

  16. yeah i hope u 3d haters are happy no way this movie will cross 1 billion or get a higher opening than twilight now :(

  17. Yeah so first off. I am glad that they are not going to rush the production just to make a few extra bucks. Somewhere there is a WB Executive that is pulling his hair out but he has the money to replace it. I also like this because it won’t cost me as much to see this movie.
Second. All of you 3-D haters know that you don’t have to go see this in 3-D. They will only show this movie on 10 screens in every theater across the world. You have options. It cracks me up that you guys keep hating on 3-D. It is not like that will be the only way it is shown. I’m just sayin.

  18. but it wont cross 1 billion now

more importantly it wont beat twilights opening

twilight getting a higer opeining than hp makes hp look like a joke

    • If it doesnt cross the billion mark illbe very upset HP deserves it..

  19. Let Twilight get 1 billion. Harry Potter is any day better although I only like the books. I don’t like either of the two movies, but yeah, Harry Potter is much much better (both book-wise and movie-wise).

    • Hey why dont you like the harry potter movies?

      • I just don’t. Don’t understand why people go all crazy about those movies.

        • They are THE best,i grew up with them they are my favorite,i have like,3 copies of each movie lol. I baught the Ultimate Editions the movies are magical, not better than the books but theyre still great!!

          • 3 copies? Maybe you could give me one of each for free. I promise to like the movies then… ๐Ÿ˜›

            • I would if i could lol,i have one disc copy,2 disc copy and the blu rays lol,im obsessed ๐Ÿ˜€

  20. butfutre genrations are gonna look at openig grosses and think twilight wasbetter than hp

    • Twilight is NOT better we all know that..

      • a-bomb,

Rickopolis is exactly right – people don’t look back on movies and judge them by how much they made at the box office.

        • qeu-0ga-g0y-s9dgh8y-sahy-we8w-ewe-ahw-ae8gh7w-aeh8yea-rhyea-r9hyea-rhyae-h8yae-h8yae-r0h8yuae-0rh8year-h0yae-rh8yae-h9yaeh-ayer-0hy8aerh-09y8aerh

nioce goin Vic Holterman u broke the internet

          • Have Respect for Vic A-Bomb….

        • Hey, I said people don’t judge movies by looking at the grosses, not Rickopolis.. He just agreed with me. Don’t take away my credit.. ๐Ÿ˜›

          • LOL well i think the same thing,so yeah i get credit too ๐Ÿ˜€

            • Well, I should get credit too, what’s the use of commenting otherwise?? ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜›

And yeah a-bomb, show some respect.

              • i give you credit no worries ๐Ÿ˜€

  21. Well, I know the Harry Potter books are better, no matter what anyone might say. Anyone who think Twilight is better are obviously fools (no offence to anyone who does think that) ๐Ÿ˜›

    • My kids will read HP as well :)

  22. but future gernations wont know

  23. I think the future generations will know. It’s not like people will forget Harry Potter. Twilight is famous now as the books were recently finished, but in the long run, I think (and hope) that Harry Potter will be more famous. I for one am surely gonna make my kids read Harry Potter. ๐Ÿ˜›

      • Yes ill force them!!! I cant wait…. ๐Ÿ˜Ž

        • umm that was directed at Abhijeet, which was why i replied under her comment.

          • I know but i said my kids willread them too :)

      • Hey! I’m a he. If I’d been a ‘her’, I’d have been praising Twilight.. ๐Ÿ˜›

I’m certainly gonna put the habit of reading books in them, and give them the HP books. If they read them, fine. If not, I’ll give them Twilight next.. ๐Ÿ˜›

        • Holy crap for some reason i thought u were a chick SORRY!

          • It’s okay, as long as we agree AND I get credit.. ๐Ÿ˜› ๐Ÿ˜›

            • I DID! lol

  24. I don’t think people decide which is better by looking at the grosses..

    • This is true.

  25. This is good news and it does make a lot of difference . The theater in my city doesn’t have separate shows for the 2D and 3D versions respectively so I’ve to go to another city to watch the 2D version . I don’t like 3D anyway and Avatar is the only movie yet which has used the technology properly.

  26. What is this about opening weekend determining which is better? Look at the overral grosses, Inception and Toy Story 3 (both great films) beat the third Twilight film in the worldwide box office ($800 and over $1 billion respectively). So Harry Potter can still win since Half-Blood Prince made $931 million worlwide and the latest Twilight film barely made $700 million.

  27. opening weekend = 75% of gross

every1 that wants to see a film sees it opening

    • MOST people LOOK at the OVERALL GROSS!!!!!!!!

  28. Thank goodness! I’d much rather they spend time on making the final two films the best they possibly can rather than on making it all 3D fancy. Substance, not unnecessary ‘style,’ please. The other 6 HP films were entertaining as they were; they did fine without 3D. The filmmakers can always come out with a 3D version at a later date.

    • yes but now ppl are saying that specific scenes were made to pop out,go watch the trailer, when Nagini (the snake) Opens his mouth, its totally for 3D!

      • Just came back from watching The Town. They showed HP’s trailer and at the end when the ‘In 3D’ came up, almost everyone groaned.. ๐Ÿ˜›

        • They had the HP trailer on the town?? AWKWARD. The town is a GREAT film BTW..

          • I’m from India, and here they don’t care what trailer they show with which movie. It’s random. Heck, sometimes they don’t show ANY trailer.
The first half was not so good, but the 2nd half more than made up for it. Loved the background music in the last 10 minutes of the movie.

              • Oh yeah, the movie’s good. Just found the 1st half a little slow.
India IS cool in one respect. We don’t have very high prices for 3D, only marginally more than a normal movie ticket, and they sometimes don’t charge anything extra, so no problem in that regard. No one’s unhappy with 3D here as far as the ticket rates are involved.

                • Thats awsome!!!! Here its very expensive :(

                  • Yeah, guess that’s why these movies are making so much. They should start making statistics of how much a movie would gross with normal ticket rates.. ๐Ÿ˜›

                    • Yes but it doesnt work like that :(

Thisone that comes out is tooclose tothe book and its gonna be awsome youlllove it i assure you ๐Ÿ˜‰

                  • The incomprehensible story in the movies is just part of the reason I don’t like them. They just don’t appeal to me in any way.
But I will have to watch them for my friend, who hasn’t read the books, and so therefore needs me to explain things. He drags me to every HP movie.. :(

                    • Oh god. Ill die to go see them lol. They are amazing with a great cast,i love them ALL. What is your favorite/worst hP movie?

                  • I don’t like any, but story wise, the last one was the worst. My friend was just so totally lost!! Heck, I’ve read the books, and I was lost too.. ๐Ÿ˜›

I do like Alan Rickman and Michael Gambon in the movies though.

                    • Wow i cant believe it!! But u like all books right? Fave book?!?

                  • Prisoner of Azkaban (the 1st I read in the series) and Half-Blood Prince are my favorite, not in any particular order. And Order of the Phoenix I liked next because of the story revelations. The ending of the last book I felt was a bit rushed, but otherwise they’re all good.
Thing is, I just picked up the 3rd book off a shop on the street to have something to read for passing time, but I just left it on my shelf for a month, thinking it was a normal book. But when I finally read it, I was hooked. Then my friend told me that there are other books too, and that’s how I started.

                    • POA was the first book i got and read too!!!! But my fave is DH all answers are revelaed and its so sad :(

                  • yeah, DH did have all the answers, but that was to be expected as it was the last book, but it was boring in the middle whenever those camping chapters came along.
When I bought the 5th book and read the description on the back with Dumbledore saying “I’m going to tell you everything”, I was just SO excited that I finished the book in one sitting.

                    • I read DH in 12 hours ๐Ÿ˜€

And i love all the action!! It has the most action of all!!

                    • I completed DH in 4 sittings. Must have taken about 10 hours. OP I finished in 5 hours. Also, the 1st book I completed in about 2 hours, but that’s because I was on a flight and had nothing else to do. ๐Ÿ˜›

                    • Well, time to go read the Wheel of Time Book 8. Even Harry Potter ain’t got nothing on THAT series.. Had a nice time talking to you and making the comments page longer.. ๐Ÿ˜›

      • I suppose that’s true, but… just because a couple of moments in a movie could make for decent 3D doesn’t mean they *should* make the film 3D. Besides, they’ve already done the ‘big gaping snake-mouth coming at you’ moment in the second film when Harry fought off the basilisk. It wasn’t in 3D but it came right at the screen very close-up, enough to make that kind of point. I feel like most of the 3D stuff is ‘been there, done that.’ The quality of it may be better than it was when I was a little kid, but it’s still just a novelty item in comparison to quality story and characterizations.

What’s so novel about stuff coming at you while you’re trying to watch a movie? It’s maybe meant for certain types of films, but in an overall sense I’d rather get sucked in by a well-written storyline and interesting characters than be sitting in my seat waiting for Harry’s wand to shoot out from the screen at me. If the HP movie sucks but they have fancy 3D effects, I wouldn’t be impressed.

        • Yes but i hate it when they have too much things coming at the screen…i hope this isnt the case.

          • so if there having this much trouble no way the test screening was 3D

go back to the test screening reports mayb they say something aobut that

            • No it wasnt in 3D…
