Harry Potter Cowboys and Aliens The Smurfs TV spots New TV Spots: Harry Potter, Cowboys & Aliens, The Smurfs

The marketing campaigns for some of this summer’s biggest titles rage on, which means there are new television spots for three pics due to hit the big screen this July – specifically, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Cowboys & Aliens, and The Smurfs.

All three of these titles are technically brand names in the sense that they are based on a massive best-selling novel, a relatively obscure comic book, and a comic strip-turned popular animated 1980s television series, respectively. Anticipation for each project, however, varies greatly.

Deathly Hallows: Part 2 is easily THE movie event of the season for the millions who’ve been watching the Harry Potter film adaptations since Sorcerer’s Stone was released a decade ago. Fast forward to 2011 and now Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) are all grown up and have become soldiers in a war against the forces of the Dark Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes).

In comparison, Cowboys and Aliens might as well have been titled Geek Nirvana (thanks, Honest Summer Movie Posters), considering the talents it unites: current James Bond actor Daniel Craig, Star Wars/Indiana Jones legend Harrison Ford, TRON: Legacy star Olivia Wilde, Star Trek screenwriters Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, AND Iron Man director Jon Favreau. Needless to say, there’s definitely an audience for this flick.

Finally, there’s The Smurfs…┬áfrankly speaking, the official Smurfs trailer provides all the information you need to know about this new CGI/live-action adaptation of a beloved cartoon. Take it as you will.

Check out the new TV spots for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, Cowboys & Aliens, and The Smurfs below:

While it’s the Smurfs television spot that features the most new footage, the Harry Potter and Cowboys advertisements are much better at getting the job done – that is, giving viewers an early look at what they have to offer in terms of awe-inspiring effects, high-octane action, and lots of dramatic bang for their buck.

The Smurfs clip, on the other hand, continues to focus on more adult-oriented humor and pop culture references that will fly over the heads of young moviegoers (and likely annoy the parents forced to go check the movie out in theaters). But at least Smurfs will have plenty of fart, burp, and ham-fisted Katy Perry jokes to keep kids entertained, right? Right?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 arrives on the scene first, hitting 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D screens on July 15th. The film will feature the sort of post-conversion 3D that has frustrated some fans, but perhaps the amount of time and money Warner Bros. has invested in the project will ensure that the added dimension only enhances the viewing experience (as looks to be the case with the studio’s Green Lantern movie next month).

Cowboys & Aliens and The Smurfs both hit theaters on July 29th – with the latter being unveiled in both 2D and 3D.

Chances are good you already know which of these movies you’re more likely to be checking out that weekend.

    • Evenwith the same footage its not boring lol

      • Agreed. I would prefer to see little new footage, so it’s all new to me once i actually see the film.

  7. Looking forward to Cowboys And Aliens… it looks very interesting.

Harry Potter… well, like some of the above comments states: it ran out of steam a few movies ago… for most people HP was only a FAD… the thing EVERYONE WAS INTO… those butt-monkeys have now moved on to the Twilight Saga… and in 2-3 years Twilight will be in the same spot that HP is in now… old… gasping for air… falling… into a deep, dark hole. Only the true HP fans remain – the general public no longer cares.

As for Smurfs: *sigh*, well, umm, what can I say?… What has the world come to?

    • Most HP fans HATE twilight FYI. There is NO comparison. And I think more people will see this last one for the “action” and others the true fans will see it because its what theyve been waiting for, for a LONG time. The EPIC finale. :)

      • @ Rickster: If you read my comment more carefully, you will see that I said that the general public (the butt-monkeys) have moved on to Twilight. At no point in my above comment did I say that HP fans have moved on to Twilight.
What I am saying is that: a few years ago HP was all the rage… everyone was reading the books, buying the merchandise, watching the films. These days only the REAL FANS are still interested. All the other people (general public/butt-monkeys) have now moved on to Twilight (reading the books, buying stuff and watching the awful movies), and in a few years, there will (once again) be something new (i’m guessing zombies;)), so then, Twilight will be in the same spot HP is in now – with the general public no longer interested, and only the REAL, HARDCORE FANS remaining.

So, I’m sorry if my above comment was misleading, it was never my intension to “compare” HP with Twilight (since it’s obvious that HP ISN’T awful whereas Twilight IS awful). What I was trying to say was that these movies are only FADS – and with the general public’s short attention span – those fads don’t last long.

I would also like to make it clear that: I have always liked HP and consider the saga really well made, with an AMAZING plot, good cast and reasonably good special effects. Twilight, however doesn’t have any of these qualities.
But the butt-monkeys don’t care about any of this, they are only interested because “it’s what everyone is talking about”, it’s what “Cindy, the most popular cheerleader is interested in – so therefore it must be cool” “It’s what Bill from work is raving about” – you get the point… The people (general public) don’t care about the film, they only care because it gives them something to talk about for the next year or so.

        • well thats nice to know :)

          cant wait!!!
