When Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was released back in 2008 it was met by some disappointment but a massive $786 million worldwide gross. In Hollywood that only means one thing – a sequel, and there have been rumblings of a fifth Indiana Jones adventure since Skull was released. Now, Harrison Ford has spoken again about the film whilst promoting his new movie Extreme Measures (formerly Crowley).

When talking to MTV Ford gave little away, but again made it clear that he was still interested in a new Indy film – if the script interests him. Ford said:

“George is working on an idea, and if it comes to a fruitful stage, all of us are very interested in making another.”

Ford went on to talk about the direction that he would like his character to take in a new film.

“I think it would be interesting to advance the understanding of the character, as we always have had that ambition throughout the series. I think it would be interesting to deepen the relationship between he and his son and play on that relationship. … It’s full of opportunity. The series is full of opportunity.”

The former Han solo implies that everyone in the Jones family will return – if a fifth adventure makes it to screens – including his new bride:

“Karen’s a wonderful actress, I’ve always enjoyed working with her. I’m hoping that there’ll be a part for all of us in the next one.”

It looks like Ford, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are still very interested in making a new Indiana Jones film. I’d like to think that the interest isn’t financially motivated,and that they like working together. I quite liked Crystal Skull, and while it isn’t the best film in the Indy series it does (in my opinion) improve with age. Having said that, I feel that the major flaw with the film is Janusz Kaminski’s terrible cinematography!

I’m up for an Indiana Jones 5, but I’d still like to see Kevin Costner as his evil illegitimate, younger brother, a rumor that circulated almost 20 years ago, but I’m guessing that the archaeologist cannot find another long lost family member in the next film.

  4. I enjoyed the hell out of Crystal Skull, it was better than The Temple Of Dump!

    I’m definitely up for a sequel, I think they should use the old Indiana Jones And The Monkey King script, it’s a great story, and I’ve always wanted to see Indy fighting haunted suits of armour!

  5. I found Chrystal Skull entertaining, even though it obviously wasn’t as good as the earlier ones (at least 1 and 3). It’s not one of my favorite movies or anything but it in no way ruined the franchise for me.
    Extreme Measures looks like such a stinker though haha.

    Still wondering what he meant when he said he couldn’t wait to get back to doing smaller indie films he could finance with the money Star Wars had made for him.

    I have a completely 180 degree difference of your opinion of ‘Skull’ and ‘Doom’. Aside from the ‘whiny heroine’ criticism and child sidekick complaint (and Key Hu Quan was a much more effective than a boatload of more grating child actors who have come and gone since – I never had any issues with his lines or performance), I never could understand why some hate the latter with such vehemence. It was nearly every bit a callback to A-list-B-movies that Raiders was.

    Some said it was the ‘darker’ tone, but most don’t have that problem with “The Dark Knight”, a film in similar blockbuster mode and arguably even darker in stark emotional terms.

  9. It wasn’t the darkness of Doom that I had a problem with, it was the whiny woman and bad story telling, and I’m one of the few people who does have lots of problems with The Dark Knight. Again not with the darkness.

    Crystal Skull was a classic movie matinee summer blockbuster, and I want more please.

  10. I agree, Vic. Just leave the character to his place in cinema history without squatting on our memories.

    Sadly, Hollywood’s priorities place “more” above “different” or “better”.

    Still, it makes one wonder. It took how long for George to do the prequels, and the fourth Indy film? And THAT was what we waited all that time for?

    What was wrong with the story?

    My problems with ‘Skull’ were many. They wasted a good villain (went from taking over America via mind control to wanting to “know lots o’ stuff”.)

    The choice of action set pieces seemed to dictate the plot not the other way ’round. “What B-movie tropes haven’t we used yet, Steven? Ants! Giant ones! How about swinging from vines? Great! Now how do we put our characters in a position to do those things?” The other films at least seemed to derive the set pieces from the direction and location the story was going in.

    They took the best of the heroines from Indy’s past, gave her a contrived reason for being there, and then gave her nothing meaningful to say or do. They even changed her personality from the previous film. Marion was a tough, hard woman who had glimpses of levity in her smirk. Now she’s all levity and absent any toughness. Now I understand that people change over their lives, but the storyteller’s responsibility is to narrate reasons for drastic changes in personality, not to let the audience try and make up their own reasons to salve the confusion.

    The films have always had an element of humor, but it was never as broadly portrayed and seemingly out of place as it was here.

    CGI whip! CGI whip! CGI whip!

    The film over-relies on CGI, exemplified by the previous statement. If Mr. Ford wasn’t in enough shape to wield Indy’s trademark weapon, surely a stand it, shot from carefully chosen angles would do much better than an unconvincing computer generated effect. One would think that at least Spielberg would remember that in many circumstances, practical effects and editing trump computer pixels.

    In the film’s behalf, I did enjoy what Shia contributed with his portrayal of his role, and I think his character has potential to be the lead in his own series, if they allow the series to get it’s grit back (grit which was best on display in Raiders and probably due to the pen of Lawrence Kasdan). I also didn’t have the problem many did with the fact that aliens were made a part of the storyline. It’s also a classic B-movie subject and I didn’t find it out of place in this series. I wish they had been used better, but the mere presence of them was not something I took issue with.

    I appreciated the film for the villain they were setting up in the first half of the film before they reduced her to wanting to be ‘smarter’.

  12. Ford actually did 90% of the whip work himself with a real whip. Although I will admit the CGI was overused. But I enjoy the character so much, and I want to see Indy again and again. And I want Shia back as Mutt, but what I want mire than anything is to see Sean Connery back. Don’t care how they do it!

  13. Just as a side note, the whip problem bugged me for a long time after seeing it. I just couldn’t digest the fact that they used such a blatantly out-of-place effect for what is considered to be part of an iconic character’s repertoire.

    No Marion (Thought the big reuinion would bring a tear to my eye but it didn’t it fell flat and her character was window dressing)

    Salah – Must have Jon Rhys Davies

    No George Lucas in the writers room or near Speilberg’s directors chair

    Frank Darabount and Nicholas Meyer as writers (no one, NO ONE does character depth, pathos, and has the awesome sence of literary history than does Nicholas Meyer and Frank Darabount could lend a splash of the mystery and menace)

    Maybe Speilberg doesn’t direct would never happen but Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, Ridley or Nick Meyer could each put out a far superior less shmaltzy Indy to bookend the series

    Limited CGI, very limited, keeping Lucas away should take care of that anyway

    THis whole McGuffin bullsh$t pissed me off in the last film. The insistance by Speilberg and Lucas that the McGuffin or the thing Indy is searching for is meaningless and it’s only about the journey getting there is the dumbest f**king thing either of them have said. The Ark of the Covenant was about as cool a religous artifact you could be on a quest for and it’s mystery and lore develpoing thru the film was everybit as chilling and engrossing as watching Indy develope as a character. The Ankara stones were sort of dopey (as was Speilberg’s chickie) and thus the second film (which had some amazing adventure) fell abit flat in retrospect

    This must be the ultimate Quest, how about Noah’s Ark? or The Spear of Destiny or Atlantis or El Dorado’s Gold?? All would be thrilling stories in beautiful locals

    I love the idea of Costner as his brother as well. Evil brother good brother don’t matter. Watched the Postman again and what a beautiful, joyous film it was. Maybe Costner could direct it as well?

    In any event if they follow my formula I think they would have a hit and a great bookend. Maybe he could wakeup at thhe beginning of the movie and that the last film was just a bad dream

    Your comment goes back to something I’ve spoken about many times.

    Asking for ‘more’ will in many cases get you exactly that. But if ‘more’ is the priority, guess what suffers? Story, character, and often a reason to care. The reason this is, is because the priority in an original film by a good director is to make a good film. They have no idea for certain if what they do will be popular or in demand, and so they focus on the fundamentals of good movie-making.

    Making sequels is always risky creatively, because the temptation is to repeat ones self instead of pushing the boundaries further.

    Directors tend to lean on incorporating elements from the original work without integrating the things that made them memorable in the first place, or without giving us new memorable things to dwell on. In short, more is not better, and is often worse than ‘less’, especially when Hollywood is involved.

    I agree with much of what you said, but I still think I saw potential in the character of Mutt (except for his unfortunate nickname). People like to rag on LeBoeuf, and he was overexposed for a while, but he has good acting chops if he gets the right roles, and if allowed better direction from Spielberg and a better screenplay (no more Tarzan, please) he could handle his own spin-off series, I believe. I like the fact that the writers incorporated a different unorthodox weapon for him to use (the sword).

  17. Most of Darabont’s script survived into Crystal Skull, so don’t go hailing him as a saviour.

    Back to basic approach is needed, send Indy after Excalibur.

    I was just saying that for the 10% of the whip stunts he didn’t do, use a practical effect, like stand-ins and editing instead of blowing a wad of dough on an unconvincing effect. Editing and practical effects were pretty much all they had for Raiders, and for all the differences of opinion fans of the character have over the series as a whole, Raiders being the best is generally not considered to be a controversial claim. It is still the best, and probably the best reason to just retire Indy’s character as being the lead.

    I understand your distinguishing “best” from “favorite”. My favorite Pixar film is ‘Ratatouille’, but their best is ‘Up’, in my opinion. The former just speaks to me in ways as an artist myself that made it feel like it was more personal.

  22. That said, Raiders to me is both the best and my favorite. I could’ve easily worn out the segment of VHS tape with the truck chase scene on it just for constantly rewinding and re-watching it over and over.

  23. I just love the dynamic between Jones sr and Jones jr. My biggest disappointment in Crystal Skull was not bringing Connery back.

  24. Connery has retired from film, actually. His bad experience on ‘The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen’ soured him, I think, on the idea of going back to doing big-action set-piece, SFX films and film in general. The man has earned the right, I think to retire after the prolific career he’s had. It’s just disappointing that THAT turkey may end up being his last Hollywood film.

    I enjoyed the chemistry between Ford and Connery too, and still like the film very much for it too.

  25. I really, really enjoyed Crystal Skull – especially because they brought Karen Allen back. But they should just let it stay now…no more.

  26. I find it annoying that Connery wouldn’t just do two or three days filming. Wouldn’t have hurt. And it would have meant a lot to the fans.

    Given the man’s career is already more distinguished than the vast majority of today’s star’s output (not just for having done more films, but better quality than most), I find it hard to see how he ‘owes’ anyone another film, or even a cameo.

    How exactly do we, as fans, come to the conclusion that we’re ‘owed’ something other than just a good theater experience, a good story and a time well-spent? This notion that people who have put their time in with the industry and done a pretty good job at it while they were there, still owe us something is alien to me.

    The better question perhaps, is what have you done as a fan as to earn it from them?

  28. I’m by no means an Indie fan never liked the franchise, but being as popular as it is I always have some friend or family member forcing it down my throat so I have seen them all. That said while I didn’t enjoy the rest of the franchise (not my cup of tea) I can say that the most recent film was just bad film making. The rest of the franchise just wasn’t for me and has some strong points. This newest one was simply bad film making though. I mean It was almost like Lucas hired his 10 year old nephew to write and direct it while he went off and got drunk off his butt only to come back and write the horrible end scene.
