First Look at Hank Azaria as Gargamel in The Smurfs

The Smurfs is one of the more interesting films coming out next year (and by interesting I mean it has the potential to be good or really, really bad). Besides the fact that it’s coming out in 3D, which is always hit-or-miss, the movie boasts a wildly diverse cast including Anton Yelchin and Fred Armisen, as well as pop singer Katy Perry, Glee star Jayma Mays, and Hank Azaria.

Among those names, the person I’m most interested in seeing is Hank Azaria as the Smurfs’ arch-nemesis, Gargamel. Azaria has long been one of my favorite supporting actors and I think that if anyone can help The Smurfs find success in the frequently flimsy family comedy genre, it would be him.

Recently, Splash News (via Coming Soon) released the first image of Hank Azaria dressed in his Gargamel gear while filming a scene in New York City. Take a look at one of the three images below.

Wow. Words fail me right now. I mean, come on. You can see the bald cap peeling off his head! Hopefully, the photographer just caught Azaria in an off-camera moment and someone on set actually fixed that before they started filming.

Beyond the wonky bald cap, Azaria looks decent. The nose, teeth, and eyebrows are probably the most significant features of Gargamel’s face and they seem to be recreated here (though I’m still underwhelmed by this picture). Hopefully he will make up for the so-so look of the character with his top-notch comic chops.

What do you think of Hank Azaria as Gargamel? Does he look like the Gargamel you know and love from The Smurfs cartoon?

The Smurfs hits theaters on August 3, 2011.
