By this point, most people seemed to have stopped going on about how The Hangover Part II basically amounted to a lackluster replica of its predecessor – and are instead now expressing their hope that the inevitable Part III will bring something new to the comedy table.
Right before Part II hit theaters, director Tod Phillips began discussing his plans for The Hangover Part III to NOT be “in the same template” as the first two entries in the series. So exactly what shenanigans might The Wolfpack be up to that don’t involve getting outrageously drunk one night, only to wake up to a crisis the next morning as they try and piece together what craziness went down?
Hangover star Zach Galifiankis sat down recently for an interview with Rolling Stone, during the course of which he revealed some information about what Hangover 3 might entail. To quote:
According to what [Galifianakis has] heard, the plot [of 'Hangover 3'] ditches the format of the first two and focuses on his character escaping from a mental institution with help from the wolf pack.
The idea of Alan (Galifianakis) being committed in the third Hangover movie doesn’t exactly require a stretch of the imagination. The reason for breaking him out of a prison-like setting is anyone’s guess right now, but it would at least give Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), and maybe even Doug (Justin Bartha) something new to do this next time around.

Assuming this is the direction that Phillips and Hangover 3 screenwriter Craig Mazin are currently headed in with the threequel, it could go either way in terms of quality. On the one hand, it would provide Cooper, Helms, and Galifianakis an opportunity to stretch their comedy skills beyond their ability to react in a (theoretically) hilarious fashion to all the madness going on around them. However, the “prison escape” setup would presumably mean that the main Hangover trio won’t be able to play off one another for a good chunk of the new film, since Galifianakis would be separated from the others – and that has the potential to be either a good or bad thing.
Since we’re at a very early stage of development for the third Hangover movie, it’s easy to be optimistic that the next film will mix the action up more than Hangover 2 did. The problem is that “different” doesn’t immediately translate into “good” – especially when the premise in question sounds more than a bit like the contrived template for an episode of your average sitcom. Or an Ernest movie (see: Ernest Goes to Jail). Or a movie where Galifianakis has ALREADY played a weirdly funny mental patient (see: It’s Kind of a Funny Story).

"We're sequestered. And on top of that we can't even leave!"
Then again, the whole purpose of the “plot” in any Hangover picture is merely to set the stage for The Wolfpack’s wild antics – be they booze-fueled, chemical-enhanced, or the result of an attempt to “rescue” one of their own. So if you still loved Cooper, Helms, and Galifianakis’ respective characters in Hangover 2 as much as you did in the original, then it probably doesn’t matter too much to you what the “plot” of Part III is. So long as it’s both different AND funny.
So will the film actually go in this direction? Well, those with long memories will recall that it was Galifianakis who originally let slip that The Hangover II would be set in Thailand, way back in 2009. Director Todd Phillips then vehemently denied that rumor…until it was revealed that his denial was an outright lie. I say all that to say: it wouldn’t be all that surprising if we were witnessing history repeat itself.
Don’t be surprised if The Hangover Part III is scheduled for a Summer 2013 release date in the near future.

My non-professional opinion is stray away from the old template. The fact is that the 2nd movie got everyone wondering that it was the same old stuff. Although still hilarious, you do that a 3rd time, people will come out mad. I would go tribal, they go on safari, Zach galifianakis’s character is an expert in “plants” but they walk into a hallucination crop of plants without knowing. Pass out and when they wake up, all hell breaks loose and they must piece stuff back together. Probably a dumb idea. But I thought I would throw something out there.
They are left side effects that keep them seeing things.
It’s not actually straying that far away, so ignore my statement.
It would be great if they focused more on Mr. Chow on the next movie. I think he is tooooooo crazy!!!
Here’s a good idea. How about make a movie with “The Wolfpack” and not call it “The Hangover Part III”. These guys are all hilarious together and I would love to see them do a movie without the basic plot of being hungover and trying to find a friend.
Maybe if Mel Gibson was in Hangover 2 it would have been better! But still enjoyed it although the first one was better.
Love the idea of Hangover 3 in Tijauana!
At first I thought this whole discussion might be a trick by Phillips to piece together a new script. until i read the posts. so heres a few. go back to Vegas, explore the card-counting, Rainman thing. Or, how ’bout a realtime hangover. Lets watch them go through the night of debauchery. Or even a better idea, the pictures at the end have the move punch. forget the movie all together. release a viewmaster series of shots.
Do people even read the article before they post a comment. So many people are saying that the movie will be too much like the first two, and that they need to do some thing different. It says at least two time that the storylihttp://screenrant.com/hangover-3-plot-details-sandy-118955/ne is NOT the same as the first two…..
I think they should make a movie called “The Blackout” and replay what happened in Vegas from the toast on the roof top to the morning they woke up. Basically show everything that happened in betweeen and the photos in action.
The second one was funny but it fed off the first one 2 much… If they do make a third one they shouldnt have the same plot ideas… they should maybe make one called “the wolf pack” and focus on therye lives… I’m pretty sure they can make something out of their everyday life… Movies do it all the time!!! like maybe alan decides 2 move out and his sister letz him move in with doug and her… therez something there alan is just crazily funny… It doesnt have 2 b that im just shooting out ideas… but something different… But if they do feed off the “Hangover” movies… they should twist it up… add the wives in it or something… they need more characters and more suspense… not the same old same old… thatz just my opinion…
The first movie was dumb and not funny. From what I’ve heard, the second was just a rehash of the first one. Now they are going to waste money in making a third one? Hollywood needs help.
yup, what a waste of money…the first movie cost them $35 mil and it grossed over $277 mil and the 2d cost $80 mil and has so far grossed $137 mil…what a bunch of idiots.
I think this is a funny concept but I think the boys should go to Disneyland and cause some havoc with Cinderella and the rest of the characters. I mean rollcoasters and fantasy land for adults. I think it would be hilarious with the writers they have.
I love Hangover, although the idea of a third one doesn’t thrill me in the least bit. I saw both the original and the second and even though some people weren’t very happy, I still loved them both equally. With a third movie in play it’ll make things seem less amusing to watch. It’ll be fine if the writers and directors made a movie with a different title and connected the movies together with the same and some new actors. I’d be interested and intrigued. I just hope that if there is a third movie, it’ll have that certain style to it. Or just not a third movie.
I think Hangover 1 & 2 were extremly funny so, making a 3rd one would be awesome
i cant wait!!! whoop whoop (:
…people who said the 2nd one was stupid and to much like the 1st..get over yourself. Its a movie, and its funny. Tell me, when was the last time you laughed that hard at “alan” or “phil” huh? yeeeah (:
I truly loved the first movie, and so of course was excited for the second. I don’t understand how people could have thought the second movie was going to be anything other than the same format as the first, just with different details. I enjoyed the second almost as much as the first. They are still funny situations. Now I am just as anxious for the third. I don’t care even if they did another movie just like the first two, I could watch these guys get into trouble for ten films. I really am not that big of a fan of Mr. Chow, though, and I hope Alan gets even more spotlight.
Guess what everyone…the movie industry is a business, they are out to make money. Hangover 2 has made a heck of a lot of money so they will make another one. It’s great when movies are good, even better if sequels are good, but they are only made if a studio thinks they will make money.
So it’s going to be Suckerpunch with the Hangover dudes? Idk. I LOVED both one and two
So bring it on!
I thought 2 was even better.
I loved the Hangover movies and cant wait for Hangover 3. It has been hinted that the setting will be Amsterdam. A nice place, but Rio de Janiero would be the best setting possible. It is at least as wild as Bangkok and has some of the most beautiful women in the world dressed in dental floss bikinis or no clothes at all.
I cannot believe that anyone would go see another Hangover….the 2nd one was AWFUL – we almost walked out.
The first one – simply genius…hilarious…one of my favorite movies ever!
The second – such a disappointment…could the writers not come up with any thing besides copying everything from the first movie…what lazy, coat tail riding idiots….i can’t wait for them to bomb at the box office when Hangover III comes out!
I couldn’t agree with you more…the first movie was a smash because of its ‘originality’ but I’ve never been let down with a sequel like I was with number 2! The characters in the first one were in a refreshingly confused state which added to the smart plot, but in the second, they seem like a bunch of angry kids with no direction, though the creators forced the story line along the first movie…I can’t believe there is talk about a third…its all about milking the public of more money with no creativeness.
Wow! Surprising. The first two were not funny at all.
then comedy isnt your favorite category! both 1 n 2 were extremely hilarious, cant wait for the 3rd one…..
Then you must be a really boring person.
Crystal, the monkey stole the show in Hangover 2. I met her before, and she is the cutest and a great actor. Hope she is in the 3rd one!!!
The first one was epic and the second one was almost as funny the characters made the movie even though the plot was missing some things to make it more a real plot… If they do a third im sure it will be better then the first two…. If you didnt like the first two you might as well go watch the benny hill show and laugh at that awful britsh humor.
the first one i laughed through out the whole movie, the 2nd one i laughed til 20min of the movie cuz my bf stared at me so i stop til the end of the movie, so i was laughing in my head….your all haters. are you guys making the movie with your money, ugh no.
DONT film Hangover 3! Please! The first one was great, the second one was like: WOAH THERE!!! and the third one will be like: *!gunshot at the tv!*
Thaanks!! C:
Please put more of Doug (Justin Bartha).
I thought 2 was very NASTY!!!! The first one was sooooooo Funny with plot and one – liners!!!! Very Disappointed >>>I watch #1 everry Christmas Eve with my Son!!!! i will continue with #1……
As most, after watching the Hangover repeatedly, I wanted with baited breath for news of Hangover II. Hangover was nonstop laughter, the characters grew before our eyes. It was literally nonstop laughter. Hangover II was a completely let down. There moments in the movie where I caught myself falling asleep. The lines were corny, and to some extend the predictable. It was a good idea using the same concept which did not leave alot of room for the viewer imaginations. The monkey scenes made it somewhat tolerable. In short, we should all ask for refunds. The movie did not live up to the hype and the anticipation expected by many after viewing Hangover….
LOL. It would be hilarious to see the Wolfpack try to free Alan!
2nd one made money due to no refunds.
Who really thinks it is funny to see “ding dongs” in a movie or disgusting acts with it.
Move was repulsive, gross and very nasty.. just wrong.
Hope they make up for it in the 3rd one!
I don’t know what people are talking about when they say the second Hangover film is lackluster. It had me hysterically laughing and Bradley Cooper…mmmm mmmm. Eye candy.
