By this point, most people seemed to have stopped going on about how The Hangover Part II basically amounted to a lackluster replica of its predecessor – and are instead now expressing their hope that the inevitable Part III will bring something new to the comedy table.
Right before Part II hit theaters, director Tod Phillips began discussing his plans for The Hangover Part III to NOT be “in the same template” as the first two entries in the series. So exactly what shenanigans might The Wolfpack be up to that don’t involve getting outrageously drunk one night, only to wake up to a crisis the next morning as they try and piece together what craziness went down?
Hangover star Zach Galifiankis sat down recently for an interview with Rolling Stone, during the course of which he revealed some information about what Hangover 3 might entail. To quote:
According to what [Galifianakis has] heard, the plot [of 'Hangover 3'] ditches the format of the first two and focuses on his character escaping from a mental institution with help from the wolf pack.
The idea of Alan (Galifianakis) being committed in the third Hangover movie doesn’t exactly require a stretch of the imagination. The reason for breaking him out of a prison-like setting is anyone’s guess right now, but it would at least give Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms), and maybe even Doug (Justin Bartha) something new to do this next time around.

Assuming this is the direction that Phillips and Hangover 3 screenwriter Craig Mazin are currently headed in with the threequel, it could go either way in terms of quality. On the one hand, it would provide Cooper, Helms, and Galifianakis an opportunity to stretch their comedy skills beyond their ability to react in a (theoretically) hilarious fashion to all the madness going on around them. However, the “prison escape” setup would presumably mean that the main Hangover trio won’t be able to play off one another for a good chunk of the new film, since Galifianakis would be separated from the others – and that has the potential to be either a good or bad thing.
Since we’re at a very early stage of development for the third Hangover movie, it’s easy to be optimistic that the next film will mix the action up more than Hangover 2 did. The problem is that “different” doesn’t immediately translate into “good” – especially when the premise in question sounds more than a bit like the contrived template for an episode of your average sitcom. Or an Ernest movie (see: Ernest Goes to Jail). Or a movie where Galifianakis has ALREADY played a weirdly funny mental patient (see: It’s Kind of a Funny Story).

"We're sequestered. And on top of that we can't even leave!"
Then again, the whole purpose of the “plot” in any Hangover picture is merely to set the stage for The Wolfpack’s wild antics – be they booze-fueled, chemical-enhanced, or the result of an attempt to “rescue” one of their own. So if you still loved Cooper, Helms, and Galifianakis’ respective characters in Hangover 2 as much as you did in the original, then it probably doesn’t matter too much to you what the “plot” of Part III is. So long as it’s both different AND funny.
So will the film actually go in this direction? Well, those with long memories will recall that it was Galifianakis who originally let slip that The Hangover II would be set in Thailand, way back in 2009. Director Todd Phillips then vehemently denied that rumor…until it was revealed that his denial was an outright lie. I say all that to say: it wouldn’t be all that surprising if we were witnessing history repeat itself.
Don’t be surprised if The Hangover Part III is scheduled for a Summer 2013 release date in the near future.

Ya know, I didnt go see part 2 due to the review this site gave it. Everyone I talk to that has seen it, I mean everyone, says part rocks and is just as funny as the first.
I guess Screenrant can’t get them all right.
Nope, they got it right. It’s lame. Laughed maybe 3 times.
There are a few laughs but 2 is no where near as good as 1.
Sorry, but all of the critics TOTALLY got this wrong! I absolutely loved “The Hangover, Part 2″ and thought it was a great sequel. People are too critical. And when I see a “Hangover” movie, “Part 2″ is exactly what I want to see!
I definitely recommend going to see it.
Yeah, Sin, I think Im gonna go watch it this weekend. Too many people say its good.
That is a stupid thing to do. Go to AMC and spend $5 before 1 on a Saturday and see it. Yes, read the reviews on here, SR always has great reviews, but go see the movie and have your own opinion and then read them.
But thats why I read reviews….so I dont waste money on a bad movie.
but that’s the critic’s opinion and not urs
How many great movies get 100% ratings on Rotten Tomatoes? How many horrible ones get 0%? The fact is, everyone is different. A movie you love, someone else may hate. A movie they love, you might hate.
The fact is, there is no such thing as a universal “bad movie” or “good movie”. There are just movies. And every one will have it’s fans and detractors.
Reviews are just the opinions of the reviewers. Sure, you can use them as a baseline, but don’t just blindly trust the review of a movie, when you already know you want to see it. If you like the actors and you like the premise, give it a shot. If a single movie ticket is going to break the bank, then you probably have bigger things to worry about anyways..
I think one’s expectations plays a large part in how much they enjoy this sequel. I had already read reviews revealing that the plot didn’t stray far from the first, so I was prepared for that and simply enjoyed the interplay between all the characters, which I find simply hilarious. The concept of waking up with a mystery as to what happened the night before is a funny formula and I could watch it several times before becoming bored. The trick to making this work is the setup of why and how they get drugged, which was a little weak in the second film. That scenario won’t fly in a third.
There is a saying that goes, “A joke is only funny once.” Usually the first time its told.
When a movie is predictable it really doesn’t spark. The Hang-0ver, a funny movie.
The Hang over 2? Well, if they try to come up with the Hang oVer 3 then they are really getting old with the simplicity of meeting up, getting drunk, and waking up to crisis situation where they try to figure out what happened.
Like I said, a joke is only funny once, usually the first time its told.
Actually i havent seen part 2 as well, and i heard that is not as good as part 1, so i think this site did get it right on the review. so far this site is on point.
“so i think this site did get it right on the review.”
How can you form that opinion not having seen the movie?
Ink, he can’t simple as THAT my friend
Everyone’s opinions are different, and to say the movie wasn’t good is WRONG it is as good as the first and IMO improves on it, yes it follows the same formula, but that just works…if the first movie didn’t excist and this one came out it would be getting rave reviews just like the first one…
Opinions vary dude, I personally thought the sequel sucked, rehash of the first, just a different location.
I thought the review was spot on in terms of a movie review. Was it as good or fresh as the first? Not by a long shot. It was a good sequel to the hang over. If you liked the first one then you will like the second one and I feel like that is why it is doing so well. I thought it was funny, don’t regret paying for it but personally in terms of a movie review I would give it a two and a half. The first hangover I had no idea what to expect, I went into this expecting exactly what I got and that was another hang over movie with different laughs. No complaints from me.
Depends on what you’re looking for. If you’re expecting brilliance in the same vein as the godfather or indiana jones, you’ll be dissapointed. If you’re expecting something you can just sit back and laugh at with friends for two hours, then Hangover 2 will be great.
I think there could be MANY potentially hilarious scenes involving Alan and his interactions with the orderlies of a mental facility, as well as with other patients. This could be the best hangover of all!
The second one was alright I hope they do better with the third one but
Rented the first one, it was OK. Awaiting to rent the 2nd one. Anyone tired of Zack what’s his name?
Galifanakis? Nope. Not tired of him at all.
Wolfpack sucker punch much? Only replace stylized action with raunchy humor.
frankly, any hangover movie will be superior to most comedies these days. they may not top the original, but they will always beat, say, an adam sandler crapfest. i for one am looking forward to a third.
Here’s all you need to know to make an informed decision on seeing The Hangover Part II: Did you like the first one? Would you pay $6-$12 to kill an afternoon laughing at similar jokes? If you “Yes” – then see the movie.
Saw this the other night and found it to be quite average. I went into not expecting much and that is what I got and this is from someone who loved the first one. Anyway, at least the third won’t be a rehash of the first and second, hopefully
1 was better than 2. There were some funny parts but two just seem like a copy.
Hangover 2 was very funny, it was the same idea as the first but that is what they went for. They didnt try to make it something different, they simply wanted to use the same idea but make it even funnier, and they did so. How many movies have they made that have the same basic story but are still very different, Caddy Shack 1&2, All of the Police Acadmys, Weekend at Bernies, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, the list goes on and on. People are too critical about things these days. The Hangover 1&2 were both great, they both did their job. If you went to watch this movie and only laughed 2 or 3 times, you went into the movie judging it out of the gate, how about next time you just go watch a you try to enjoy it for what it is. I think you should hear what critics say about a movie, but also watch a movie and form your own opinion, thats what i always do.
Are we up to ” Hangover 17 – the geritol years ” yet. When did Hollywood lose all it’s imagination and style. This crap, and movies about the little Beiber, whats next. Hollywood needs to just close it’s doors !
I think you skipped a few or 12 in there somewhere.
Hey cant wait any plans for additional cast
The hypocrisy of this article in relation to the review that this site gave, ASTOUNDS me.
Um, I’m genuinely confused about what you mean by “hypocrisy.”
this article discusses the fact that hangover 2 was not good, the same way the sites review did. how is that hypocrisy???
The cluelessness of this commenter when this article aligns so well with the review on this site ASTOUNDS me.
Vic
The humor of Vic in response to the above commenter aligns itself perfectly with my own sense of funny which doesn’t astound or surprise me at all.
The 2nd one obviously was a little much like the first one except a little darker which I didn’t care for, but it still had funny parts. This 3rd one still sounds like a great idea since it will be different than the other two and Alan being in an institution made me laugh.
Went and saw Hangover Part 2 and it is funny I thought. I didn’t think it was as funny as the first because the first Hangover was unpredicable and you didn’t know what to expect. Also most people can relate the the first Hangover because it was in Vegas and many of us have partied in Vegas. How many people can honestly say the have gotten drunk and passed out in Bangkok. I feel the second movie is worth seeing
give it and us a break not funny anymore!
The Story for III sounds okay, but I hope someone working with the screenwriters is reading this article. If they are, Try to involve Amsterdam in some way. It would seem appropriate since Amsterdam is considered to be a place to party (I.E. Vegas, Thailand).
I’m a bit confused by some of the comments here. Many of the supporters of Hangover 2 are saying expecting much plot or story development is looking for too much, why isn’t this same theory applied to a movie like Transformers 2?
Just let it go! A two hit movie is good. By the way something can be created around Alan itself, the guy is great.
Hangover 2 was so bad, I hope they don’t make another one unless the producers hire some competent writers who can think of some original ideas instead of simply rehashing the first movie.
The Hangover Part 2 was NOT funny. The first Hangover movie I’v seen a dozen times, and I still laugh. As for the sequel, just not entertaining.
Good cast, poor script. In my opinion, people flocked to the second movie thinking it would be as good as the first! Guess what? It was terrible. I never even cracked a grin. Fact is, the theater was packed full and the laughs were few and far between.
II was okay but it felt like they tried too hard to follow similar story line of I but didn’t come up with anything unique. For III, they should consider involving other characters outside of Wolf Pack, even though I love those 3 guys the story line needs a new twist. Like maybe involving the spouses somehow having them experience a Hangover of their own.
You are so dumb. If it ain’t broken…Don’t fix it. This movie is hilarious.
Pathetic. Talk about flogging a dead horse. Their reviews already hit the floor, so #3 will be an insult to comedy. Pathetic Zach got his 15 minutes and the sad loser is going to milk them to death. This is beginning to look a LOT like that other loser, Tom Greene, making the same stupid grimaces over and over until everyone got tired of him and sent him back to oblivion. Zach, meet Tom; Tom, meet Zach – soon enough, you’ll be the only people on Earth knowing about each other.
OK, so after reading this article, I have an idea for “III”. Everyone goes to visit Alan in a mental institution, and he appears stoic is every way. Though they feel for their fellow Wolfpack member, then realize there is nothing they can do, and they leave him there. On their way home, they stop at a restaurant to eat, only to realize when they leave that the trunk is open. After further investigation, they find Alan. He explains that he is breaking out, and that he doesn’t want to go back. After some arguement, Alan is convinced that it is what is best for him, and they go to take him back. On the way back, Alan finds a way to drug all of them at a rest stop, and he throws them all in the back seat and drives to Tiajauna. When they wake up, they realize what has happened, but also realize that Alan has lost Doug…again, while they were in a Donkey Show (if you need to ask, you don’t want to know.) And then let it go from there. You take aspects of the old movies and then new aspects of a third movie. You can introduce a new character (maybe Alan’s roommate in the asylum, who looks up to him in a way that no one understands), and the end result could be Alan staying to live in TJ…it’s an idea, but would be pretty cool if they used it.
That is actually a pretty good idea LOL
i actually love this idea:D
I agree that is a good idea that should be used.
Hangover 2 sucked!!! The EXACT SAME movie all over again.. with the element of surprise completely gone. No more please.
Ryan,
You swore an oath. An oath that our trip to TJ would NEVER be discussed. I am wounded. And disappointed.
