Despite widespread reports that The Hangover 2 will take place in Thailand director Todd Phillips has now gone on record to say that the sequel WON’T be set in Thailand, or Mexico, and that all of those reports were simply rumor.
Let me be one of the first to say: BOOOOO! (HISS!).
Seriously though, I was truly psyched to heart that The Hangover 2 was going to invade the fine country of Thailand. Back when Screen Rant reported on this news rumor, I immediately started wracking my brain trying to come up with every nugget of comedic gold that could possibly be mined from an R-rated comedy set in a Thai backdrop.
My wonderful list included: beauty, adventure, bustling urban centers, gorgeous jungle countryside, jaw-dropping ancient architecture, ladyboys, “ping-pong shows,” underground fighting rings, shots of cobra blood, delicious Pad Thai and a city overrun by monkeys.
What a loss.
Todd Phillips told our friend Steve Weintraub over at Collider first-hand that The Hangover 2 won’t be set in Thailand. Check out this exchange between Philips and Weintraub:
SW: There’s a lot of talk that The Hangover 2 is going to Thailand.
TP: I don’t know. There’s a lot of rumors. There was rumor also that it was going to Mexico or something and neither are true.
Ok… Well if you remember, it was Latino Review and CHUD who respectively broke and then confirmed the rumor about the Thailand setting. And it all started with a quote from Zach Galifianakis, star of The Hangover:
Galifianakis: Well, ‘The Hangover 2′ I think we’re going to Thailand. The problem with ‘Hangover 2′ is that we have to up what we did which is very difficult. So we get, I think, kind of kidnapped…we do end up in an exotic location. That’s all I know….
Of course that quote was from July of 2009, but when one of the stars of The Hangover 2 starts claiming a Thailand setting, it’s kind of hard to write it off as “just another rumor.”
In any case, The Hangover 2 will be set somewhere and will involve something. Be sure to check out the rest of Collider’s interview with Todd Phillips.
According to Phillips, The Hangover 2 will start shooting in November (hopefully).
