[UPDATE: You can find a newer trailer for Hancock here.]

Other movie sites have given the Will Smith superhero movie Hancock some coverage of late, and honestly I had no idea what they were talking about. I hadn’t heard anything about this movie until the bootleg trailer appeared on YouTube. It was yanked shortly thereafter and I never even saw it.

The basic plot is that Will Smith is a regular shmoe/slacker who happens to have superpowers. It is obviously a comedy and I think that putting together Will Smith plus superhero just can not miss at the box office.

He fights crime and such but apparently not without some prodding, and in the most comic book-like screen version of a superhero movie yet, he causes a LOT of collateral damage. Seriously, have you read a comic book lately? You do NOT want to have superheroes protecting your city. We’re talking millions of dollars in property damage every time they fight some supervillain downtown.

Hancock was directed by Peter Berg and co-stars Charlize Theron, Jason Bateman and Johnny Galecki. In it, Will Smith plays a tortured superhero who crash-lands in Brooklyn and tries to transform himself by romancing an alluring housewife, causing chaos in the city.

The trailer looks not only funny, but like the superhero-style visual effects are pretty cool as well.

Check it out for yourself:

I’m kind of wondering why they didn’t hustle to get this trailer out with I Am Legend… or did they? I saw the IMAX version so I don’t know if this was attached to the regular screenings.

For larger versions of the trailer you can visit the official site.

  1. Will Smith does it again weeeeeee
First impressions, sounds like Bruce Almighty redux.

  2. Huh.

That…doesn’t look very good at all, actually.

Then again, neither did Bruce Almighty.

  3. I saw the regular I Am Legend and it didn’t play in front of that either. I like the way it looks. Doesn’t mean there isn’t a high probability it will suck, but I’m optimistic.

  4. This looks hilarious! That smile he flashes, ugh! Another Will Smith winner!!

ps-The whale bit was funny, but watching him fly was really funny. He’s just like, who cares, no grace. Lot of crazy destruction, too.

  5. Heath, I agree with you. Once again, we have a concept that may work with Smith in the role that would be a guaranteed bomb with the wrong actor.

  6. Heheh, That looks pretty cool. I agree on the flight, it’s like yeah, I’m flying, big deal. I’m glad to see a bit of a different take on Super Heroes. Don’t get me wrong, I love all the serious Super Hero movies too, Hell I can barely contain myself waiting for Iron Man, but it’s nice to see a twist on the Super Hero movie too.

  7. Yeah, something better than “My Super Ex-Girlfriend” would be nice. :-D

  8. The Good: Trailer does its job. Looks very entertaining if handled right. If its representative of the whole, could be the sleeper hit of 2008. The one nobody saw coming.

The Bad: Five writers are given credit for the movie , with the best of them (Akiva Goldsman) having a decidedly uneven record (having involvement with both “Batman & Robin” and “A Beautiful Mind”).

    Color me cautiously optimistic.

And yes, the whale bit put me into hysterics :)

  9. Too many trailers is indeed usually a bad sign, but you’re listing “A Beautiful Mind” as equivalent to “Batman & Robin”?

  10. Dude!! That was hella funny!! I’ve been following this film for sometime now,I can’t wait to see it! :-)

  11. Vic,

    Equivalent? NOOOOO!!! :)

Certainly not as equivalent, I was only using those movies to point out that Mr. Goldsman has a rather inconsistent level of output in regards to the quality of his work. i.e. – the script could go either way – and he’s the most prominent name on the list of writers.

  12. Oh! I thought you were lumping those together, not indicating wild swings in quality. :-)

  13. If only there was a writers strike during the Star Wars prequels and Lord of the Rings, so that their shooting schedule wouldn’t have been plagued by rewrites.

  14. Love the look! Will Smith has yet to make a truly bad movie, so I’m think this movie will be 2008 equivalent to Men in Black.

  15. ok, that just looks plain crazy LoL

  16. This looks like it’s going to be a good, funny flick. The flying reminded of Ralph Hinckly in the Greatest American Hero tv show from the 80′s.

Now THAT would be a fun movie!!

  17. The dialog in the first 15 minutes of the film references somebody pulling, breaking or sticking something out of, into, or up in someones ass at least 5 times. Another movie with horrible editing and script writing counting on a big named star and a moronic public to pull in box office receipts.
