Ever since the early days of the Xbox, the Halo franchise has stood tall as the most beloved exclusive series in Microsoft console history. Every new game installment in the series has been greeted with ravenous anticipation, as has each addition to Halo’s expanded universe.

Which brings us to this fall’s big release of Halo 5: Guardians for the Xbox One. As is usual nowadays, Halo 5 will be released in several limited edition varieties, two of which include a brand new animated series adaptation of Eric Nylund’s celebrated prequel novel Halo: The Fall of Reach. Today’s Comic-Con festivities have brought us our first teaser trailer for the series.

For those unfamiliar with Nylund’s 2001 book, Halo: The Fall of Reach serves primarily as an origin story for the Spartan-II super soldier project that ultimately led to Halo series hero Master Chief’s rise to prominence in the war against the Covenant. The novel was originally published weeks before the release of the initial Halo video game, and was received warmly by both fans and critics. Halo: The Fall of Reach’s success paved the way for future Halo books, as well as novelizations of other Xbox titles.

Of course, fans eager to first check out Halo: The Fall of Reach will be asked to shell out a pretty penny, as only purchasers of the Halo 5 limited edition and limited collector’s edition will get immediate, on-disc access to the complete series. The limited edition retails for $100, while the collector’s edition is priced at $250. For those willing to wait a bit, Microsoft has said that The Fall of Reach will eventually be streamed on the Halo Channel app, which will soon be available on iOS and Android platforms for the first time.

With rave reviews for Halo 4, and mountains of hype going into Halo 5: Guardians, Microsoft and developer 343 Industries have to be loving their chances of raking in yet more hundreds of millions of dollars. Halo: The Fall of Reach is just another not-so-secret weapon intended to drive sales through the roof. If this strategy works, maybe we’ll get an animated adaptation of The Flood with Halo 6? Only Master Chief knows for sure.

Halo: The Fall of Reach hits stores (as part of Halo 5’s collector’s editions) on October 20th, 2015.
