Apparently, America loves its romantic comedies, even when they’re unadulterated pieces of garbage. Take last year’s Valentine’s Day, for example. Despite being universally abhorred by critics, the movie was so successful that director Garry Marshall is mounting a follow-up called New Year’s Eve. See if you can guess what it’s about.

Similar to Valentine’s Day, New Year’s Eve will follow a bunch of single men and women as their romantic lives haphazardly intertwine on and around an overrated, overblown holiday. Halle Berry had been cast as one such single lady, but according to Deadline, she just dropped out – and has already been replaced by the current queen of bottom-of-the-gutter romantic comedies, Katherine Heigl.

The ex-Grey’s Anatomy star will be playing acting veteran Jon Bon Jovi’s romantic partner in the movie. Interestingly enough, Heigl was previously in talks to co-star in Valentine’s Day, but because she demanded too much money for too small a role — $3 million, more than a-listers Julia Roberts and Anne Hathaway received for the same movie — she and the project went their separate ways. I’d be curious to know how much they paid her this time around, and downright astounded if it wasn’t less than a cool million.

How many more ways can Garry Marshall rip-off the film classic known as Love Actually before he runs out of major holidays? Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and now New Year’s Eve have been covered, so there are only three or four left. Let’s all cross our fingers that Passover is next on the list.

Hip music? Hip actors? This movie had everything

New Year’s Eve, starring Robert De Niro, Ashton Kutcher, Ice Cube, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Biel, Zac Efron, Michelle Pfeiffer, Josh Duhamel, Sofia Vergara, Russell Peters, Hilary Swank, Abigail Breslin, Seth Meyers, Til Schweiger, Jon Bon Jovi, Frankie Muniz, and Lea Michele, is just getting ready to shoot and is set to hit theaters December 9th, 2011.

  1. My god, De Niro is in this crappy sequel? Valentine’s Day sucked hard too.

  2. Well, the other queen of these kind of movies (Jennifer Aniston) must have been on vacation or adopting a baby or asking too much money.

  3. Sorry but you can’t gripe on one person for ripping something off and then praise another for doing the same thing. 99% of movies these days are remakes, sequels, reboots or rip offs. He’ll even Avatar ripped off old TV show episodes and even the Ewoks of Star Wars.

I caught Valentines Day tonight on HBO and found it quite good. Was nice that it wasn’t so focused on one character couple nor was it typical super happy movie ending for all. Pretty true to life – at least as much as you can get in a movie. This article reads more like biased hatred than objective opinions.

    • Where did I praise Avatar? Or remakes? Or whatever?

  4. It might turn out out Halle showed great wisdom in making this decision.

  5. I understand making a moving about Valentines day.
But am I the only here that doesnt consider New Years Day a romantic holiday ?

  6. im glad halle berry is out and heigl is in. we dont need another trashy black pos

  7. Bad decision Halle Berry is a better actress than Katherine. And I havent seen valentines day, dont really plan to so meh…

  8. Heigl made $13M each for her last 2 movies. Less than $1M for this role? Not likely.

  9. Have to ask Screen Rant, why so much hatred towards Katherine Heigl? Ok in terms of acting ability, she may not be Meryl Streep, but there are far worse actresses around. She certainly should’ve ben picked above Hatthaway for Catwoman that’s for sure.

Completely agree 100% with your comments. Heigl is probably the hottest actress in hollywood though Eva Mendes does push her close. Get those two acting together in a movie as the leads and I’ll be at the front of the ticket queue.
