‘Hall Pass’ UK Trailer – Cheating Is (Not) Funny

It’s been well over a decade since the Farelly Brothers’ glory days releasing highly successful raunchfests like Dumb and Dumber or There’s Something About Mary. The duo will be back in theaters soon with the marriage comedy Hall Pass, but that doesn’t guarantee moviegoers are going to follow.

A UK trailer is now online for the film, which features some well-known names in TV comedy like Christina Applegate (Samantha Who?), Jenna Fischer (The Office), and Jason Sudeikis (Saturday Night Live). Whether Hall Pass itself is funny remains to be seen.

Hall Pass features Owen Wilson and Sudeikis as best buds who find themselves yearning to be free and promiscuous bachelors once more. Their wives (Fischer and Applegate, respectively) devise a rather ingenious (or possibly inane) scheme to tame their petulant husbands: offer them a “hall pass,” i.e. allow them the freedom to do whatever they want for a week, no questions asked. Matters get messy when the ladies also start engaging (more successfully, it seems) in extramarital affairs as well.

This being a Farrelly Brothers’ movie, Hall Pass is poised to have its fill of lewd gags involving middle-aged men getting high on weed, seducing less attractive and/or older women, and engaging in various acts of debauchery that leave them breathless, bleeding and possibly without a working vehicle. It’s possible the film itself will be chockfull of laugh-out-loud moments, but this new theatrical preview doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence.

Watch the Hall Pass UK trailer below:

This past month’s No Strings Attached kicked off the trio of “unconventional relationship comedies” that will hit multiplexes in 2011, including Hall Pass and Easy A director Will Gluck’s Friends with Benefits. All three of these pics are star and concept driven, and strive to mix up the standard rom-com formula by featuring edgier content. Seeing as the Natalie Portman/Ashton Kutcher pic is doing well enough at the box office, that plan seems to be working so far.

Hall Pass looks to throw a lot more crude, potentially R-Rated physical comedy into the mix as well. Farrelly Brother yuckfests seem to do best when they balance the laughs with sentiment, but most people seem to agree the pair failed to do that with their last release, The Heartbreak Kid, or really any of their movies released since the year 2000. That trend doesn’t bode so well for Hall Pass.

It’s possible that the best jokes in Hall Pass are very NSFW and so the green band trailers fail to capture the outrageous mood of the actual movie – the failure or success of which might also weigh heavily on the Farrellys’ plans for The Three Stooges movie. What do you think?

Hall Pass makes its way to U.S. theaters on February 25th.

  1. haha that trailer was really funny!

  2. Anyone that’s planning on getting married should see this.

This is your future, minus the hall pass deal. :)

    • i cant understand why they’d even want one… i mean look at their wives! they are good looking!

  3. Looks horrible. Farrelly Brothers have been losing their touch ever since post-D&D and Something About Mary.

  4. THIS is definitely a must see!

  5. arnt they using the same poster from stuck on you seems very similar to me

  6. I’ll pass. I may have been tired of the typical rom-com, but this batch of crap has done nothing but put me off. I’m gonna wait and see if anything GOOD actually comes out this year… >=(

  7. Not to mention, the release date doesn’t inspire much confidence.

I bet we could all do a play-by-play of the plot.

  8. Throw in another couple and its Friends the Movie.
