I’d barely finished my Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time story and gone to bed yesterday when news broke that Maggie Gyllenhaal had been offered the lead role that was first mooted for Orlando Bloom and Zac Efron. (Yes, that picture is for the ladies that read Screen Rant.)
The video game adaptation is to produced by uber-producer Jerry Bruckheimer and directed by Mike Newell.
Maggie Gyllenhaal?
Fooled you! Of course it’s Jake Gyllenhaal, Maggie’s brother - she’s too busy romancing The Dark Knight..
So what are my views on this?
Yep- Keep reading to find out.

Not a bad choice. While he’s no Tom Cruise (come on give the guy a break these days) he does have a certain screen presence and he is much, much better than Bloom (don’t even get me started on Efron). Oh, and the dude can act- if you haven’t seen David Fincher’s Zodiac go and check it out- it’s one of the best films of the last 10 years- seriously.
Every young actor needs a franchise, strike that- every actor needs a franchise- sorry Harrison, Sly, Bruce and maybe you too Clint! Over the years Jake Gyllenhall has come close to the role of Batman and he was inches away from replacing Tobey Maguire on Spider-Man 2 so we know that he is willing to sign up to a multi-picture deal.
The main problem at the Gyllenhall has injured himself on the basketball court and he’s walking around on crutches- or should that be hopping around on crutches? You get my gist anyway.
Will he be fit and reading for the physically demanding role?
With a bit of luck yes, he’s one of the better younger stars working in Hollywood today and he is a bit like a young Tom Cruise (the little fella gets enough bad press these days- I feel that I must stick up for him).
Will injury prevent the Donnie Darko star from nabbing this career making role?
With a bit of luck we might find out The Day After Tomorrow. See what I did there?
The Prince of Persia: Sands of Time is set to open on June 19, 2009

Mike Gyllenhall??
Wow its too bad Jakes wasting his time on such a crap project.
What’s next a guitar hero movie?
Don’t do it Jake.
I agree Niall, Zodiac was very well done. Donno Darko was awesome….but to compare Jake to Cruise. (I can’t eat that for lunch).
I got the part! I got the part! Mom, Dad, I’m gonna be famous! Woooohooooo!
Nial, this proves that one cannot rub one’s tummy with one hand and type with the other at the same time.
Congratulations Mike! Woooohooooo!
as the Prince of Persia? I really don’t see it. At least it’s not Brenden Frazier
I picture someone who looks like Billy Zane, only younger. Get an unknown…
After watching him in ‘Zodiac’ I think he could probably do it.

How did Jake Gyllenhaal become Mike Gyllenhall in the space of this short article????? Wierd.
Niall
I can’t quit you Persia,,,,
I swear I’ve seen this poster, o nevermind…..
Oh, the Prince of Persia movie is coming out. Well isn’t that special!! I suppose Hollywood thought they’d pull the wool over our eyes again.
Just take a little trip down memory lane. Think back to Sunday School. Who was it that fell from heaven like lightning? Hmmm? Who was it that the mighty angel wrestled with before he could get to Daniel? Who is it that has so many cute little nicknames like Prince of Persia and Beelzebub? Could it be….Satan?
I thought he’s doing Spiderman 4?
No that’s Mephisto..
@markie That was just a rumor.
