My choice would be one of three people, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortenson, Kurt Russell. Of course Sam Elliot or Tommy Lee Jones would be the best fit if they were younger. I have a very bad feeling though that this is going to be more like Gunsmoke Melrose Place than Gunsmoke.

Go for it sounds like it might be a good movie ...its just a suggestion but Jeff Bridges would be a fine choice since he did well in the retelling of Charles Portis "True Grit".... All they have to do is become the Character act....Will be interesting to see who gets Matt Dillon's part. I would be in favor of someone older with self-publicity attitude and rustic look..Pitt is good in Westerns though... My question who will play Kitty or Doc and or Festus ?? Just sayin!!

I think some football or basketball star like John Elway or someone of that nature would have a better chance of pulling this off than some pipsqueak like Pitt. hahahaha. laughable though as it is.
come on Hollywood, think outside the box.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.... Little Bradley Pitt as Big Fisted Marshall Matt Dillon! Hahahahahaha. Come on, we can do better than that. His wimply little voice cannot fill the shoes of Arness or Conrad. Come on Hollywood, show some grit, find us a true diamond in the rough. Someone who exudes strength of character. That was Matt Dillons claim to fame. He was everyones big brother, not the little new kid on the block. Pitt...hahaha. (sigh). No disrespect but he is not even close to Matt Dillon in size or presence. Matt Dillon needs to be about 6 feet 6 or 7 and have a voice that will wake the angels up. Dont insult us with one of these little guys. Its not fair to them. Show some imagination Hollywood or watch this movie go down in flames.

Sweet Jeebus dude, do you know anything whatsoever about the Gunsmoke story line? Dillon WAS worn-looking. He was a hard dude worn down by a hard life in a hard time in a hard place. Getting some dumbass pretty boy to do it just for the eye candy would be the worst possible decision here. The actor who plays Dillon should look like a man of cold steel who has lived, seen, and done things that most people can't even imagine. One of the radio episodes describes him stabbing a guy to death with a pitchfork after the guy had murdered a woman's family, enslaved and raped her for weeks... and this aired in the late fifties/early sixties! Dillon as he was originally written was the inspiration for Eastwood's Man With No Name and Stephen King's Gunslinger. Pitt MIGHT be able to pull off that level of cold-steel badass, but I can't think of an actor working today who really carries that persona the way Eastwood did.

Also, the writer messed up--it's James Arness or William Conrad, not William Conrad. Bill Conrad originated the character on the radio series.

It's really too bad that this will be a pretty-fied action flick. I'd love to see someone who can really do justice to the franchise in the driver's seat, but I'm under no illusions about it. The studio will make plenty of money with a pretty and brainless action flick slapped with the Gunsmoke label, so there's no real reason to put any serious effort into it.

I can tell you now that Brad Pitt is not your man for the role of Matt Dillon. Ryan Reynolds would be better. He can hold the role. Brad is too old and worn looking.

Having watched Gunsmoke many times, I don't see Pitt, Reynolds, or Crow fitting the Dillon character. I would like to see the list being considered. The focus should be on
good, clever western story. What made Gunsmoke the success it was, the stories or James Arness as Matt Dillon? Even that is debatable. By the way, the above picture isn't the original cast. Burt Reynolds and Ken Curtis came after Dennis Weaver played Chester Good, Mr. Dillon's Deputy.
