Guillermo del Toro Talks ‘Hellboy 3′

Published 5 years ago by , Updated July 11th, 2013 at 12:17 pm,

Even since Guillermo del Toro resigned as director of The Hobbit, fans of his Hellboy films have been wondering if development on Hellboy 3 could begin in the near future.

The devilish superhero – who is played by Ron Perlman – last graced the big screen in 2008 with Hellboy II: The Golden Army.  Despite being at times outright silly (albeit intentionally) in tone, that pic hinted that a dark fate awaited its titular hero – and del Toro knows exactly what it is.

“I would love to do it,” del Toro says of Hellboy 3, “but the heartbreak for me is that I know how it ends and I don’t know if I want to see that ending.  But I would love to do it.”

Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has addressed the ultimate fate of the character before and admits that his plans for the comic book clash with del Toro’s idea for a third film [SLIGHT SPOILER ALERT]:

“The problem is, what del Toro’s talked about to me is that ‘Hellboy 3′ would be the end of Hellboy… My version of Hellboy in the comics is a finite story, but it’s going to take me 15 years to get to that ending.  If [del Toro] makes ‘Hellboy 3′ and it’s the death of Hellboy, I’m left doing the comic going, ‘But I’m not done yet.'”

Hellboy aficionados are quite familiar with the significant difference in design and atmosphere between Mignola’s comic books and del Toro’s film franchise.  The hand-drawn incarnation of the hero is an introverted loner whose brushes with the world of the supernatural tend to weigh heavier on his mind afterwards – as opposed to Pearlman’s gung-ho, beer-chuggin’ warrior and lover of Barry Manilow from the movies.

Both versions of the character are interesting and entertaining in their own right, but the melancholic ending del Toro seemingly has in mind sounds more appropriate for the books, not the movies.  A bittersweet conclusion could still work for the film franchise, but it would be difficult to pull off.

Del Toro is currently set to team up with James Cameron on a long-expected adaptation of the H.P. Lovecraft novel At the Mountains of Madness.  With his name already attached to several other projects in development, del Toro may not have the opportunity to work on the concluding chapter to his Hellboy trilogy for awhile.

Whenever del Toro does get to work on Hellboy 3, it will be interesting to see just what he has in mind for the big red guy’s final adventure.

  1. if i dont get another hellboy movie,we all die!!!!!

  2. im a 13 yearold girl and i was looking to see if hellboy 3 would come out so i saw this page and all im saying is i hope hellboy3 comes aout but i dont want hellboy to die so that all im saying but plzzzz let hellboy3 come outand isaw my dad watching the movie so i wanted 2 watch it and wen i saw part 1 and 2 i loved it

    • Yea I’m 14 & I’m a huge fan of hellboy. I really hope a third comes out in addition. Ill definetly see it in the movies 😀

  3. We need another hellboy movie

  4. Ok I am mega excited about a third Hellboy movie Im a disgustingly huge fan. But Im so in love with Ron Perlman and Hellboy that I couldnt bare to see him die…I mean Ron is always the great Martyr in his movies and Darnit I want Hellboy to live!!!

    • Ditto that! Me too… Let Hellboy live to raise his sweet two children,
Hope the first child is a girl/like her mother and boy inlikeness of his fathers warriors heart.

    • Hellboy isn’t marvel. It’s Dark horse.

      • You really dumb.

        • Wait, am I missing something? Because Hellboy is most definitely Dark Horse and not Marvel…

          • He’s from Dark Horse Comics. Not Marvel.

Also as someone who grew up reading and am STILL reading the comics. DO NOT MAKE ANOTHER ONE.
Do not wreck my image of Hellboy. Don’t do it. I can’t see him dead and then go read the comics and have him be alive. Way too much mind F***ery. Just leave him as is or make one where he doesn’t die, easy right? Or make one when it’s actually written that he dies? They did Monsters inc. 12 years after the first one. I can wait. People who have not read the comics should wait. Let us original readers catch up.

            • Also I just remembered how old Ron Perlman is. Just don’t make the movie. Don’t do it.

  5. Ron Perlman is 61 years old. How long does GTD think he can wait untill the right time?

  6. I agree with every one here that it would be an absolute tragidy to not have a third Hell Boy movie.
Why not do the fortold ending but insted of him remaining dead he comes back to life & makes a corny remark Like,( “you really think you can get rid of me that easily!?” , “I’m the prince of darkness babe, your stuck with me”.
Then just have him retire his horns & the kids take over his job of world domanance.
Ending with words from him saing “The ones who should be afraide of death & darkness should be humanity… “Fornow my little hell raisers will be running the show”!.

    Just a thought.
Because it would defanantly be a shame not to have a third ither way.

  7. I love the Hellboy movies and don’t want him killed off.

  8. Having Hellboy die in number 3 wouldn’t be the worst thing, especially after the build up in number 2. I mean, Professor X died in X-Men 3 and that was one of the more dramatic parts of the movie. Besides, the story’s too open ended right now. All we know is that Liz is pregnant and they’ve quit the BPRD. We need to know what happens next!

  9. I love the Hellboy character as much as anyone, and I’ve read all the comics. It hurts to see a beloved character die, but Mike Mignola himself said the death of Hellboy doesn’t necessarily mean the end of the story. That’s when a character gets more interesting. When you think about it, Red doesn’t belong on earth (especially the comic book version, although he does fall in love with Alice), so making that ultimate sacrifice for mankind’s protection from the Ogdru Jahad is the most noble way to avoid the fate that was being forced upon him. Admittedly, I’d have a hard time watching that on screen, though. I remember being crushed when Roger was killed in the comics, so seeing Red die on screen would probably be traumatizing for me.

  10. Hellboy better not die. First off that would be a stupid idea. Why does everyone want cool characters to die? Second, it would be weird because the professor died already. Hellboy should NEVER DIE!

  11. I don’t think ya’ll should stop makin the Hellboy’s at the end of the 3rd one. I think you should make a fourth one with Hellboy and Liz’s kids takin over Hellboy’s spot. Let them live the life that their parents did.

  12. I want hellboy 3!!

  13. Come on del Toro. Bring back the big red one and fight the evils of the Democratic party in 2012!

    • I’m not sure Hellboy could have the support of the republicans when he threatens traditional marriage so much.

      • Not to mention he kinda looks like the typical devil image, they would probably think it was the end of the world or something.

  14. i hope the thrid one is goning be good than the first and the second ones.

  15. why not go straight to hellboy 4 or 5 with the kids grown and do flashbacks, use new younger actors…worked for starwars

  16. Fight the democrats? Hmmm, a giant demon who thinks of himself as a regular working class guy (based on Mike Mignola’s father) doesn’t sound much like someone who would side with people who were anti-minority and anti-working class. But hey arguing about this is about as pointless as ‘more taste- less filling.’ Then again perhaps you wouldn’t be looking to fictional characters for inspiration if there were any real men or women conservatives to look to in 2012.

    • Froso,

Whatever. Your arguments are tired and B.S.

  17. I also would love to see Hellboy 3. But, why must he end up dying? As a fan of the movie franchise, I can see it inevitably that Hellboy becomes the Dark Prince (I believe it’s called), why can’t that be an ending for Hellboy 3? I mean it’s going to happen, and that would be a nice twist on it. Will also open up a window for more movies. I really enjoy this franchise and hope they reconsider making a 3rd one, and that the director strays away from the “killing” Hellboy and finds another alternative just as maybe sad but also interesting.

  18. Just finish the story , so what if he die’s????

  19. Then dont kill him off. Wouldnt be the first time a movie didnt completely follow the book or movie. Maybe it would set up a new comic. There is always an unexpected twist, cover up, or alternare ending.

  20. Im conflicted now!! I want Hellboy 3, but if the director sticks to the whole (sad ending) I dont know if I would want to see that or just leave it at 2 (even though its obviousley not finised) Ya know? Why would they want to kill him off I dont get it. In an article I read they even said that the (sad ending) made it even harder to get financed! PEOPLE DONT WANT THE HERO TO DIE!!!!!!!!!! DUH!!! Do they seariousley not know this. I mean COME ON!!!!!!!

  21. Waiting for Hellboy 3

    • How could u just leave us hellboy fans hanging? I hope sons of anarchy chokes an goes bottom up

  22. I want their to be A Hellboy Apocalypse movie action figure toys.

  23. Hellboy 3 is a must need. Nothing else really must be said. Hellboy is too good of a story and deserves a third, tragedy or not. The want, need and fanbase alone should prove this point. Golden Army was just a tease if not a ” hold over” to get us(the fans) a third or final. We need closure if anything. Hellboy was awesome and Hellboy 2 was badass and the third or fourth would be a devine move. There is nothing else like it, “silly” or not

  24. When I grow up I want to be Hellboy….
    I’m 41, ;] lol, you better make Hellboy 3!
Or I’ll come find you, & then you’ll b Sorry!

  25. I think there should definetly be a hellboy 3 especially after the build up of suspension we got from the second movie, and I don t get why people are saying he should dominate humanity like why can t he start to dominate humanity then the sight of liz and his kids brings him back or something like that idk, every1 has there own oppinions but there should be a hellboy 3

  26. Personally. I would. Love to see hellboy continue just. Because the books say it the ending dosent mean it has to stop sure that lots of fans feel this way.

  27. Hellboy’s getting to that point I think we the fans can cope with the death of an ICON. Heck I’d even say it would be new bold since I was sort of expecting BATMAN to bite it in the Dark Knight rises. Yet in the end he just seemed to shake off severe back injury and close proximity (that’s less than a 100 meters) to a nuclear blast.

Though the biggest interest I have after just watching the second film again, is, what does Hellboy’s children look like. Do they inherit the parents powers or do the develop unique ones of their own.
