Full ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Trailer Introduces Marvel’s Cosmic Avengers

[Update: Watch our Guardians of the Galaxy trailer analysis video!]

With Disney picking up a few of those super-expensive $4 million TV commercial time slots during Super Bowl 48, we thought (hoped?) they’d use the big event to shine some light on their upcoming, but relatively unknown big budget release - Guardians of the Galaxy

Disney was already buying space for their other 2014 Marvel Studios feature, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, and Need For Speed so even though Guardians of the Galaxy is a late summer (August) release – we expected a potential tease to at least introduce a mass audience to the property which is otherwise unknown to casual and mainstream moviegoers.

Writer and director James Gunn promised we’d get something else “cool” very soon and we heard from insiders that he was holding back any reveals on the footage front – as much as he could – until the special effects were up to where he wants them to be since the entire film is based in space and two of the five main characters are entirely digitally animated.

With Guardians of the Galaxy earning headlines from Toy Fair 2014 in New York over the weekend with its tie-in Hasbro and LEGO toy sets, and star Chris Pratt showing up via video to talk briefly about his his character’s plastic incarnation – and the yesterday’s three cool photos featuring the cast and their starship – that time as finally come and the first Guardians of the Galaxy teaser is finally here! It’s only 15 seconds long but the full 2:23 version (world premiere!) will air tonight during Jimmy Kimmel Live.

The Cosmic Avengers, so to speak, are lead by Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) and include Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) as Gamora and Dave Bautista as Drax the Destroyer. Their smallest and largest members, Rocket Raccoon and Groot, are voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel, respectively.

The 15-second teaser from this morning:

Some of the brief scenes overlap with the extremely early footage we saw presented at Comic-Con (including the music!) last summer and hint at the sci-fi, ’50s pulp tone Gunn is aiming for. Guardians of the Galaxy is the most different and ‘out there’ film from Marvel Studios yet and it’s not just because it takes place off of Earth and features mostly aliens.

  1. No. 1 movie on my to see list!

  2. At some point Marvel will have a failure. Whether it will be this or Ant-Man, the deciding factor will the the kids. So yeah, no wonder they are trying to focus on marketing the $hit out of a raccoon with a gun. But seriously, if kids don’t fully buy into this movie; they are doomed. Their typical viewers for the other Marvel movies [not YOU fanboys] will most likely not appreciate it. I for one don’t think i care anywhere near as much for going to the cinema and watching this as opposed to say CAP 2 [which i can bet will surpass IM3].

  3. This film already evokes feelings of 80′s nostalgia, with an opening trailer scene that evokes memories of Indiana Jones, comedy ala Red Dwarf (Look it up if you have no idea what I’m talking about) and a little furry alien like Alf in Rocket. That alone says buy me a ticket.
Then add the Marvel universe, and we have a film that is going to be a whole heap of fun.
It could also be a muddled piece of garbage, but my faith is in the former and I say give it ago.

    • “This film already evokes feelings of 80′s nostalgia, with an opening trailer scene that evokes memories of Indiana Jones, comedy ala Red Dwarf (Look it up if you have no idea what I’m talking about) and a little furry alien like Alf in Rocket.”

And that just it…this is not the 80s, neither is the film Indiana Jones, nor red dwarf. Besides your analogy of what this movie feels like is off to me, because it does not resemble, neither feel like any of those things, including alf.

“That alone says buy me a ticket. Then add the Marvel universe, and we have a film that is going to be a whole heap of fun. It could also be a muddled piece of garbage, but my faith is in the former and I say give it ago.”

Yup, you certainly sound like a Disney/marvel personnel trying to get folks to see this movie.

      • Nothing to do with them. Just my opinion. Rightly or wrongly. And we will know when it finally comes out.

        • And I agree my Alf reference is a bit off. Not sure what I was thinking other than hairy space alien who quips. Not exactly a gun touting Racoon.

      • That was a little harsh.

      • Or sounds like someone interested in this film.

  4. For me it looks like Groot is gonna steal the show. I see him as the trees in LOTR where everyone sees them as bad and angry, but they’re actually on the good side fighting alongside you.

The green Zoe is needing some getting used too, but that will happen I’m sure of it. I’m also glad they didn’t show too much Rocket yet, that’s one of the most important things in this film they need to do right.

Starlord is amazing, I love Pratt. Drax is the outsider of this team. He doesn’t look like the smart guy and/or lovable character but he will take care of some badass scenes. Imagine him taking on a bunch of bad guys in that prison without even trying his best.

The feeling is great in this trailer and I think the story will be amazing too. This is like the first Star Wars all those years ago but now happening in 2014. A real Space Opera with some great characters (and some a little less great) and a good story with amazing scenes from the whole universe. For me it’s not necessary to have these guys on the same screen as one of The Avengers, they are The Avengers but in outer space. Keep this seperate from The Avengers we know but maybe reference them a couple of times. I can imagine they can introduce a lot of smaller marvel characters in GOTG or GOTG2 where they can build on for maybe future movies or to expand the team of GOTG. (I don’t know if that ever happened in the comics? We don’t have those here in Belgium..)

  5. I don’t really know much about the guardians, but this, spiderman, and captain ‘merica are probably the 3 movies im looking forward to this year. Now i’m really exicted for guardians since i’ve seen the trailer!!!

  6. the broblem with marvel for us the fans its that the cinematic universe becoming so popular and mainstream that its movies are very light and not as dark as we want it.from another perspective if it washn t the box office success maybe we wouldnt have the change to see the movies at al.anyway i hope that inventually that will change starting from age of ultron and captain america …

    • Just speak for yourself. I don’t want them dark. I like the light tone of these movies, not everything has to be bleak and depressing these days. We have plenty of that in the real world, and I do like my fun, thank you very much.

  7. I first off apologize forbeing a demi downer.

I was expecting so much from how fans over hyped this. I was very annoyed but a few watches made me rethink.

And I relized I started thinking like those guys on the bvs pages…very jugdemental and negative for no reason.

So I will give the guardians a shot. And if I end up eating my words I will.

Still hate gamoras look. Not gonna sell me on that.

    • Debbie Downer. not a “demi”

  8. I will definitely be watching. Looks better than I thought it would be and I like the quirky humor approach.

  9. Came across this while looking up Rhomann Dey (John C Reilly’s character) on marvel wikia…
“Dey flew to Earth ahead of Zorr and chose randomly Richard Rider as the new Nova transferring his power to him. Dey linked minds with Rider and explained to him the new powers he has received as well as the threat of Zorr on his planet. At first, Rider thought the encounter was a dream, but soon discovered his powers and accepted his role as Nova.”
    That’s pretty exciting.

  10. Anyone remember Ice Pirates? :). Or was it Space Pirates? Just Google Space Herpes, lol.

The good? This hints at being one badass movie that is a ton of fun. It’s got a Firefly/Han Solo/Indiana Jones/Lethal Weapon meets Spaceballs feel to it. Rocket intrigues me a lot, but Pratt will make or break this movie. We will laugh, but will we care or be bored/have disdain?

The bad? Humor is a bit forced and the music is a bit forced, pushing into the “eye roll/goofy but dumb/trying to hard”. My fear is a Howard the Duck Bomb.

Seeing the trailer has magnified the good and the bad for me. The humor was more clumsy than witty for me.

    • One final thought…the Nova Corp suits looked like cheap made-for-TV costumes.

    • Ice Pirates! I’ve seen it plenty of times when I was a kid, and in fact the DVD is sitting on one of my shelves. I hindight I could have done without the farting robots with bolt and nut diarrhea, though. ;

      • p.s.: I actually love Howard the Duck. Lea Thompson as an incredibly cute punk rocker makes it worthwhile alone and the rest is pretty fun, too. Guess where the DVD sits. :D

    • Folks keep comparing Guardians of the Galaxy to Firefly albeit a good show it’s closer to Farscape. Seeing how these Guardians are based off the 2008 versions which reflect some parallels to the show. BOOM Farscape! Remember the movie’s original synopsis: About a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants. What happened to that John Crichton?

  11. Well, I know nothing about Guardians other than what I’ve read/seen here but I found myself chuckling a bit during the trailer. I’ll be watching this in the theaters for sure.

  12. Wow I know this will be the next Green lantern. Naw It wont do that well. This trailer like this movie is a TURD BURGER!!! I see know this crap is gonna flop. It will still do better than Antman.

I wont comment on this movie again until August 3rd, then it will just be laughter.

Whats the sequal gonna be Guardians of the Galaxy vs Avengers. I cant wait to see the looks on the Marvel fanboys faces when this turd gets flushed in August. (mic drop)

  13. Everyone has been calling this the “Cosmic Avengers” or “Avengers in Space”, but after watching the trailer again, I realized what this movie will be…

…it really most resembles (from the teaser at least) “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl” in space.

  14. I went in viewing this trailer with no expectations because well I don’t read the GOTG comic’s. However from watching it a couple times I have reached my conclusion. The trailer isn’t terrible but it evoked the same feeling in me I got from watching Thor 2′s trailer. That the movie will be good and entertaining with some funny and action scenes, but far from great. I hope unlike Thor 2 this movie trailer proves me wrong and the final product is something that is really great in quality.

    • Good lord…it’s the first trailer for crying out loud, and I loved the quirkiness of it all. The humor doesn’t seemed forced; and that may only be a hint of some of it. I have no doubt there will be serious elements to it.
The movie looks like a lighter version of Farscape to me…but more polished whereas, Farscape was more gritter in tone. I will definitely be seeing this in the theaters.

      • I don’t know. Farscape was pretty darn light, with all the crazy aliens and Crichton’s quips and pop culture references all the time that no one got. :D

      • But who denied it was a first trailer I never said the movie was 100% gonna suck or I wasn’t going to give it a chance. And it still is a trailer and the first one at that I would think they would put there best effort into it especially when it is a lesser known marvel property. I’m just saying It didn’t really motivate me to be really excited for more to come tis all. No need to be getting upset everyone can have their own personal opinions. The humor may work for you but for me it did nothing for me personally and there isn’t anything wrong with that. Nonetheless like I said again I hope it proves me wrong.

  15. Hate to sound like debbie downer but this trailer is not doing it for me. I’m a huge Marvel fan & hope I’m completely wrong but have a very bad feeling this movie has a well above average chance to flop. Not that my pockets get filled with box office money & if we get a good movie that’s all that matters but I just don’t see the non-comic book fan general public buying this movie.

  16. TO ALL THE DC fans here bashing GOTG…..

James Gunn said from the 1st damn day he got the job that it will be a CB superhero movie where the characters WILL NOT take themselves too seriously!! I cannot believe all the ppl here that have never even heard of the Guardians talking about how bad it looks and how childish it looks and then in the same sentence saying how they like DC’s dark tone, THIS WAS NEVER MEANT TO BE A DARK or GRITTY CBM….NEVER, it is a movie that almost does not take itself too serious! If you ppl don’t get that then this is not for you.

HAVE FUN finding a theatre that has TDK or MOS and have fun watching one of DC’s last good dark and gritty realistic movie, because that is not what Marvels M.O. is and that is not what it will ever be, But hey, you guys will all be getting a serious Batman Vs. Superman movie in 2 years……SO LET US KNOW HOW THAT GOES! but in the meantime we will watch the 3-4 Marvel movies that come out in the same time frame and we will have fun doing so with our kids.
But you guys will be able to hold hands with your bestie watching a dark and gritty serious movie

    • Wtf?

Where did this come from. I’m a dc fan and I admit to no knowledge of gotg but I haven’t been following this religiously.

I’m not familer with james gunn or his films but I admit I was a bit like wtf when I saw the trailer. I then did a rant got flamed and and decided to google so.e info on this.

I don’t care really bout tone or whatever but there is no need to bash dc movies for no reason.

  17. I’m definitely interested but as someone who’s never read a GOTG comic I would’ve loved to have seen more of Rocket, especially since I think he’ll be the hardest character to sell. All in all though I’ve gotta say it looks fun and definitely worth the ticket price

  18. Folks keep comparing Guardians of the Galaxy to Firefly albeit a good show it’s closer to Farscape.

  19. The guy at the comic book shop I go to says that it is wrong to be more excited for Guardians of the Galaxy than Captain America The Winter Soldier but the trailer is awesome sauce and who wouldn’t be psyched for comic avengers YEAAAHHHHH BOYYYY!!!!!

  20. Marvel movies are getting to jokey. The dialog is just quip after quip. In my opinion, the comedy would be more effective if Chris Pratt’s character was the only one telling jokes. Like in the Dark Knight, Joker has the audience laughing uncomfortably (in the mob meeting and detonator scenes) because everyone else is serious. Or even the first Iron Man, RDJ is the only character quipping and is seen by the other characters and the audience as eccentric. In the sequels, all the characters are joking, that’s why Mickey Rourke sticks out like a sore thumb (he would have been better served in the tone of the first, bird jokes omitted).

p.s. we sent studios the wrong message laughing at the Hulk’s slapstick

    • From the trailer, it looks pretty much that Chris Pratt’s character is the only one cracking jokes.

      Or did I miss something?

  21. “Illegal manipulation of a Gramosian Duchess”…love it ;)

  22. I’m still planning on seeing this movie, but the trailer all but completely killed my buzz. That song was just too out of place; it made it seem as if this movie’s going to be too slapstick and self-aware (my least favorite forms of comedy to this date). I was hoping (still am) to see an outlandish and down to earth take on mythos I’m unfamiliar with.

    • I agree as I have said repeatedly I’m unfamiler with the mythos or characters beyond some known facts. I was hoping for more of a star wars meets indiana jones.

What I saw was a character many said would be like honsolo or what ever comes off as it is said inthe trailer an a hole. He screams about he stuff getting man handled…and I know now that is a link to his past but really I had no clue till I was told. Then we see him flip off the scanner..mirror….or what ever and then act like a fool.

I understand wanting to add humor. I thought the opening line when he introduced himself was clever and witty, but they need to start toning it down in the marvel movies. I feel like every time kat denings character opened her mouth in thor 1 and 2 it was to whine or make a stupid joke. She clearly was added for comedic element. Why? Did they not think an action fantasy could sell.with out an insert for comedy?

This looks if they keep the humor down a bit to be a really entertaining scfi action film. If I wanted a space comedy id go watch mel brooks spaceballs.

      • This isn’t supposed to be a Scfi action film, its a comic book movie, and yes, comic book is most definitely its own genre. This movie never will try to be Aliens. It will be goofy, and cool, and visual. As any good true comic book movie should be. To make myself clear. I don’t mean the dark gritty ones aren’t good, cause they are arguably the best ones. I just think its time to make a true comic book movie. And I for one can’t wait to see something that we haven’t seen before, and strongly suggest you, and everyone else, go into this movie unbiased, and open minded

  23. Wow. Looks really dumb.

  24. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJQVlVHsFF8

Thats all I have to say

  25. Hell f**king yes.

  26. Please, god, don’t let these character abortions mix in ANY way with ANY characters from the Avengers team.

Keep them as totally separate universes, and maybe the damage will be contained.

    • “character abortions”.. *sigh* Well, we’re all lucky no god will be hearing that prayer. The entire point of this movie is for them to mix with the Avengers. And it’s already painfully obvious that this is the same universe. Pick up a comic.

  27. Boy! When the movie geek sites started to appear,I thought ‘would it be cool to about our comicbook movies w/other fellow geeks’. Now,when I read most of these comments. I’m starting to think & maybe hoping that whole comicbook movie trend will crash & burn :P

  28. New Rocket Raccoon footage.
