‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Trailer #2: Something Good, Something Bad

Published 11 months ago by , Updated May 20th, 2014 at 2:02 pm,

On Friday the embargo lifted on the first part of our Guardians of the Galaxy set visit coverage and we shared a lengthy and fun interview with Marvel’s newest star, Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill aka Star-Lord in the space-based adventure. We also shared a new poster and the news at the time that the long-awaited second full-length trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy would debut today, Monday May 19th, marking the second phase of the marketing push for the new property.

The debut occurred on the official Guardians of the Galaxy Facebook page after a Q&A session with director James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan. And leading up to the fan-focused social media event, each day over the weekend, Marvel released short 15-second teasers featuring brief glimpses of new action bits that’ll feature in the full-length trailer, and the voices of Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper).

One of these three videos even featured Groot, the large, walking tree, handing a flower to a little girl, emphasizing his role as the innocent member of the Guardians of the Galaxy roster, but we’ve yet to hear Vin Diesel voice the character’s three words: “I Am Groot.” Until now, that is.

The new trailer reveals quite a few additional details about the film, from Groot’s ability to grow roots, how Star-Lord’s mask and jet boots function, Ronan’s use of the Universal Weapon (his hammer staff), how the Nova Corps seemingly is forced to work with Star-Lord’s team of “losers” to save the planet Xandar (we also see the Milano hero ship leading a fleet of starships of the same design) and the space station known as ‘Knowhere’ which is inside the gigantic head of a Celestial (comic readers will be pleased to see that one).

We’ve yet to meet Michael Rooker’s blue-skinned Yondu character, one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy from Marvel Comics but we know his role is that of a father figure to Peter Quill (Pratt), and we still don’t know yet how the Nova Corps (led by John C. Reilly’s Rhomann Dey and Glenn Close’s Nova Prime Rael) will be adapted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The official details hint that they might be a security force for the planet Xandar, but in the comics they protect and police the entire galaxy. They’re wearing very practical uniforms in the film, helmets and wrist-mounted blasters included, so we can’t tell if they have “super powers” like they do in the books and that may determine whether or not we’ll ever see characters like Richard Rider (the human character who becomes Nova Prime and had his own solo comics series) appear in the films or if there’s any chance of a Nova spinoff down the road.

Interestingly enough, the leaked description of the second GOTG trailer turned out to be 100% accurate.

  1. Meh, don’t know what it is, there’s just something about this that doesn’t make it scream out ‘watch me’.
Wish trailers had focused a bit more on the other 4, atm I haven’t seen anything to interest me in the characters.
Not to mention, Pratt doesn nothing for me as Quill, I just don’t care for his character at all, I don’t want to watch it to see him fail(which I’d know he won’t as he’s the hero) and he doesn’t make me want to watch it to see want him to succeed.
Also while I don’t usually like him John C. Reilly has been the only part I’ve about the trailers.

  2. Awesome! Love the tone, love the look, love the music. This will be great.

  3. Would have been 100 times more enjoyable if I didnt have to pause multiple times to let the stupid firestone commercial force play in the background.

  4. @Rob, lol i saw you asking questions on Facebook. Right on! Asking the source for intel.

    • lols, none of mine got answered – too specific I think ;)

BUT I did answer someone else’s question and Gunn backed me up.

      • Haha, same here. I think my questions got removed.

I saw Gunn reply to your Nathaniel comment about the Celestial Head. Oh I sent you a friend invite lol

  5. Ronan looks cool. I still haven’t seen the fights or much out of Rocket.

And a solo Rocket movie would be pretty groundbreaking, at least for this era. We haven’t had solo creature flicks since like…I dunno, Alfie? Howard the Duck? ET?

    • Does Ted count?

      • Yes it does.

  6. I hated rockets voice, statham was still my prime choice. However the movie looks rather great

    • Same it makes no sense why they didn’t give it to rockets actual voice actor who does the video games and cartoons for a voice acting gig its not like they need the star power if coopers not even on screen. This is Rockets actual voice https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I8z3hG_9yNQ instead we just get a raccoon that sounds like the hangover guy.

      • The tone is too soft for me but they probably chose him for his star power. It’s not bad, I was just hoping for a more bad-ass type of voice haha

      • Listening to that, I agree, that voice would’ve been much better.

        • I have a feeling that Rocket’s voice will vary greatly in the movie. I remember hearing clip that was uploaded to Instagram where he was yelling and it sounded much better. So his voice will probably vary quite a bit. Even his “Oh Yeah” line sounded way different than the other line used in the trailer.

I actually don’t like the voice actor used in the Avengers or UMvC3

      • Gunn says they tested like dozens of voice actors but no one they tried could get the voice combination of comedic, intense and dramatic like Cooper. I have no doubt Cooper’s star power has a big part to play as well. Gotta get that dude on the press tour, right?

      • Bandit. One way gets you to put Bradley Cooper on your poster vs. guy who does video game voices

        That’s the main reason.

      • Rocket doesn’t have just one voice actor… Just because he’s a Brit in a fighting game and ONE CANCELLED Saturday morning cartoon doesn’t mean he should. His other cartoon voice is Master Shake from ATHF. He he’s not in the comics and that is all that matters. hahhaha THE SOURCE!

  7. Now just have to wait until they announce who will be playing Thanos. Would be shocked if it weren’t Diesel.

    • Kevin Feige or James Gunn confirmed that Thanos will have a mo-cap actor and will be done by CGI for this film and they will probably cast an official actor for The Avengers 3.

      • Are you sure? Cuz all the news I’ve read, as of late April said that Thanos has already been cast but they aren’t going to announce it right away.

      • It’s since been confirmed that Thanos has been cast and that it’s not Vin Diesel. They addressed the latter during the Q&A today.

        • Ahh okay cool. Did they address when they would announce who is playing Thanos?

          • Nah, it might be saved for the film’s actual release unless it’s another big star and need more last-minute marketing buzz.

    • I saw in a comment that Gunn responded to saying that Vin is NOT Thanos.

      • Really? hmmm makes me wonder who Vin is gunna be playing in the future.

        • Black Bolt? The one character he’s been rumoured for since last October when he confirmed he was working for Marvel Studios?

          • Yeah that the only one that I was left with since thats been the rumor for while.

          • So Vin will go from playing a character with just one line repeating over and over to a character with no lines?

            • Well hey, least he won’t have to mumble his way through an entire Marvel movie, right?

Besides, his voice is deep enough that they could enhance it via technical wizardry and make it super awesome to see on screen when he says something and destroys an entire city.

Something also tells me that Vin could surprise us with the kind of physical and non-verbal acting that I haven’t seen much of since that 10 minute sequence in Frasier when David Hyde Pierce did a silent bit involving his attempts to iron a crease out of his pants.

        • Check it: What Other Marvel Character Could Vin Diesel Play in 2016-17?

  8. I’ve said this before somewhere in the internet and I will not get bored to say it… this movie is BEAUTIFUL. Vibrant colors and stunning amazing visuals, lots and lots of cool, very cool shots… wow… just wow.

Like painting on a canvas, this looks like it just came out of the comic book. I instantly had the similar giddy way goosebumps I felt when I first saw Winter Soldier walking with his cybernetic arms on that movie’s first trailer. Even if it won’t be the best movie of this summer, I’m definitely (taking my whole family) watching this without any bit of doubt. Haters can’t say anything they like (or actually dislike) about these trailers, but nothing will ever change my mind. Marvel, take my money!!! Beside, you can’t hate something without actually seeing it first, so I’m sure those people will end watching this movie whether on the theatre or home video or by illegal means (which means in the end they still loose anyway hahaha).

People, lower your expectations and let’s just enjoy this gorgeous space opera and all its visual glory. Remember what happened when you hyped too much? You whined when it didn’t meet what you wanted it to be. Don’t expect too much, just expect to have fun and be entertained!

    • EXACTLY, I’ve waited for a film like this my whole life and i’m 99% sure it will be one of my favourites for years to come :D

  9. Farscape ripoff. Might check it out on DVD.

    • Can’t tell if trolling or just ignorant…..

That’s like saying Lord of the Rings ripped off Harry Potter.

      • I don’t think he’s trolling. He just displayed a lack of knowledge due to unfamiliarity with GOTG. Little does he know, GOTG is older than the original Star Wars. Farscape started around 98′ 99′..

        • GotG, in it’s current incarnation, was created well after Farscape. The movie is not based on the original “Guardians of the Galaxy” comic. It’s based on the “Guardians of the Galaxy” team that was created during the 2000s which itself has no actual connection to the comic that was published in the 70s except for having the same name.

          • That’s definitely not true. There’s quite a bit of involvement of the original team if you’ve read the run.

            • OK, so the two teams are connected. You win a no-prize. The actual substance of my statement remains, though: Farscape predates the current incarnation of Guardians of the Galaxy.

              • I don’t understand the argument or comparison. These characters on the current GOTG team that you’re specifically calling out have been in Marvel Comics for years. Groot was introduced in 1960, Peter Quill and Rocket Raccoon in 1976.

I don’t understand how that rips off Farscape…

    • You do know guardians of the galaxy has been around since the late 60s right?

    • Wow, Too many commenters are trying to call the others wrong instead of addressing your statement. Now there was a 1969 Guardians which Yondu was part of. And a 2008 Guardians which is used even today. The funny thing is Farscape and the 2008 Guardians had parallels. John and Peter working for NASA. Groot and Zahn being humanoid plants peace loving but smart and dangerous. Drax to Dargo being tough guys. I do recall a small creature with fur who could trash talk. hahahaha And guess who Gamora mirrors. All while on a living spaceship…huh. BUT the characters that make up the team are much older. With Marvel NOW and GotG prequel comics the origin stories differ. I LOVE FARSCAPE and its the main reason I like Guardians of the Galaxy. hope this is better than saying you are wrong.

      • YUP! Good introduction in the GotG. Stay away from the complex. The idea is to educate people about it versus jumping down their throat so they hate on Marvel and its fan. #MakeMarvelFans I didn’t think of that earlier. I didn’t see many Farscape episodes when I was younger. I am more of a Firefly fan. This movie does fell like both with a dash of Star Wars and green skinned women from Star Trek for taste.

  10. That ass! Zoe Zoe! <3

The movie will be great, can't wait!

    That ass, that ass!!

  11. What a strange concoction Guardians is.

Part Grandiose, space opera, space comedy, galactic action adventure. So many different tones that make it hard to nail down exactly what this movie is. Excited but cautious, I’m definitely seeing this and taking it with an open mind. And isn’t this how things should be? Nowadays we want that sure thing from trailers instead of just going in free of expectation.

Yes Guardians is a huge risk but Marvel knows it and is reveling in the uncertainty of it all. The element of the unknown is their secret weapon and people are at least curious if not completely convinced. I for one want them to succeed big time with this, just to show the cowards at WB / DC how to take faith and belief in your properties.

  12. And the question that still unaswered: why they speak english??

    • It wouldn’t really be English, it would be whatever common tongue people in that part of the galaxy would use. It’s presented as english so we don’t have to constantly read subtitles while there are other things to see.

    • Actually, the very first teaser explained this if you look closely at the data screens in front of Peter Quill when the Nova officers are lining up the Guardians.

He has a universal translator embedded in his head. The Nova Corps know all languages through their connected Worldmind (HUD in their helmet).

      • Yes indeedy…

Rob Keyes, bringing the troof as usual. I forgot about that point of the Nova Corps until you said it.

        • Oh… and also… WHO CARES, it’s a movie. :) If we’re gonna get caught up on languages spoken, maybe we should also debate over, I don’t know… how any of the dozens of other seemingly impossible things are happening. :) I kid, I kid. But really, it’s a movie made for English speaking people, that’s the primary reason. :)

          • Yes.

Why are you posting that to me, instead of to the guy who doesn’t understand the point?

    • They don’t. But the engineers at Marvel have developed a universal translator that automatically translates the recorded voices. I read a write up on it in reader’s digest. Pretty cool technology… #facepalm

Seriously though (still not really) groot is not speaking English but it just sounds that way. In his native tongue, the phrase ia-mGRu-oot literally translates to “hashtag facepalm”. I don’t know why he says “hashtag facepalm” all the time but who can understand a giant tree anyway?

The real question you should be asking yourself is this: if Groot falls in the forest and no one is around, does he still say “I am groot” (translated of course to “hashtag facepalm”)?

      • Oops, didn’t see this comment. ^This^ is truth.

    • @bs10hundred, They’re actually speaking the Kree Imperial language. Facebook and Screenrant are streaming the video through the Supreme Universal Translator so to us, we’re hearing English.

      • LOL! That is a great comment.

PS. Really excited for this movie. The hardest part will be separating Chris Pratt from his Andy Dwyer character on Parks and Rec. Although, if there was room for a Ron Swanson cameo I would probably see the movie at least 17 more times in theaters.

        • Tbh I had to upgrade my adobe steamware for the translator to be compatible. Before the upgrade, Rocket kept repeating the word, “Flark.”

    • you could ask that of ANY space movie that doesnt have earthlings in it, ala` star wars. i had a problem with ep3 when obi-wan went to that diner, and it looked like it came from the happy days set, with a greasy cook wearing an apron and a towel over his shoulder. that one scene really took me out of the movie

  13. AWESOME SAUCE!!!!!!

  14. Spaceballs is a space comedy. This has comedy in the same vein as Star Wars, nerf herder.

  15. Amazing Job! Ben, Dice, Scott, and Rob Keyes are my favorites here on SR. This movie is going to kick butt and chew bubble gum, and guess what; it’s all out of bubble gum! Name that movie reference, anyone?

    • They Live! At least the movie doesn’t look like it needs a Brazilian plastic surgeon… :-)

    • THEM there is fightin’ words.

      • *smacks forehead* What was i thinking?!

  16. Not a fan of the Jokey tone of the trailer but it looks awesome.

    • Read: I hate happiness

  17. Looks like film of the year for me after TASM2.

    • Cap: TWS > TASM2 … come on now.

      • For me ya but I liked Cap2.Its one of the better Marvel films.

      • Not for me, no. Cap 2 was good but TASM2 was better. I was more invested in the emotion, the plot, the characters and the action in TASM2 while I kept drifting in and out of Cap 2, seeing what others in the cinema were doing and trying to spot easter eggs during the downtime scenes between the ones that really mattered. That and I don’t instantly love a movie and think it’s the greatest because it has “‘Murica” in the title.

Not that it matters because Godzilla became my placeholder Film Of The Year anyway.

        • @ Dazz
agree with you on TASM2 ,which did you think was better TASM or TASM2?

        • If you think CAP: TWS was about the “American Greatness” you missed it. Seeing it called out real world issues of the U.S. and not really painting it positively. Amazing Spiderman 2 was great… Even though the Peter and Gwen lovey-dovey made me actually forget the movie involves a super strong guy who sticks to walls and swings on webs. I was waiting for it to end so I could watch some other CW show like Arrow or Supernatural (Now thats some American Greatness!) And shoe horned Green Goblin in just for “THE SPOILER”….. the full Rhino can be put together using about 3 trailers with most it being in just one. Cap TWS did more for its universe and franchise than Amazing Spiderman 2.

  18. Their choice of songs already had me.

When Rocket’s talking about his life-span, that didn’t sound like Cooper AT ALL. But it was ALL GREAT!!!

And I thought it was coming out in July!! Now I have to wait longer?

    • It’s been August 1 for a good year now after getting pushed back from May 16. You must have mixed up your movies.

      • If you are in the UK the release date has been moved up a day to the last day of July, so thats something :D

  19. the manage your subscriptions link is just bringing me back to the SR home page.

  20. “My name’s Peter Quill, but there’s one other name you might know me by…Burt Macklin, FBI!”

  21. does anyone now what the team sees in the trailer at 1.15?
I havent read any of the comics but what i tought first was that it was the place where Thanos where in the Avengers end credits?

probably i am way wrong, since i am no super fanboy who havent read the comics..

    • Its Knowhere, the severed head of a celestial (basically space gods) which serves as the GotG base governed by a telepathic, Russian dog named Cosmo. Gunn has hinted at Cosmo showing up, but in the movie universe Knowhere is the headquarters of the Collector, the guy at the end of Thor: The Dark World.

      • If you look closely, (and do screen caps like I did), there is a very short cut of Benicio Del Toro as The Collector at 1:44.
Very subliminal. He is shaking his fists, and looks pretty frustrated. LOL

      • spot-on with the Knowhere comics info. Where did you hear it’s The Collector’s home in the film universe? I’m not saying your wrong, or even doubting it, but I follow all the news and didn’t hear that anywhere. I missed something for once?!

  22. Cringeworthy. A cartoon Raccoon scratching his balls? There’s trying too hard, and then there’s trying way too hard, and then there’s this movie.

    • That didn’t strike me as trying too hard, or trying. It struck me as a little nod to how real they’re making the character, he’s not just a cute furry cartoon face.

  23. Interesting point in the article. Nova corps will most likely have a much more limited role and not be the police for the galaxy prob more likely either limited to xandar of however large that particular civilization. Doubt asguard would let nova corp “police” them or the kree etc. when they say the fate of 12 billion people, pretty much confines it to xandar.

    • @Lazerblazer, It can very well be that Rhomann Dey becomes Nova Prime by the end of the movie and his first order is to expand the Nova Corps to become a galactic police force.

  24. Man, i really don’t like Rocket’s voice…. Everything else looks awesome though.

    • I think you mean everything looked awesome but one thing didn’t sound awesome (I’ve to disagree with you about Rocket’s voice).

  25. Finally, it looks like a comic book movie that follows fantasy/sci-fi more than trying to be realistic.

  26. I never wanted RR to sound british! (nothing against the brits, I actually like their accent) and I was 100% against Bradley Cooper, but now hearing him I kinda like it and I don’t think it sounds like B Cooper at all…. Now Groot on the other hand sounds TOO much like Vin Diesel, I actually feel it distracts from the character a bit

    • Which British accent do you like? There are literally hundreds of them on our small island.

      • MEH, they all sound (basically the same to me…PLEASE do not take this the wrong way) Just as im sure you think most MURICANS sound the same!! EXCEPT them clowns in the south, LMAO, JK Southern peeps! (NOTHING BETTER SOUNDING THAN A SOUTHERN BELLE, or A 3y/o southern kid! I really don’t know Dazz, My 14 y/o daughter is convinced she is going to marry a brit so she may know the Diff! But I really do like MAYBE the MOST COMMON ONE? Not sure which that is but I do think they sound very cool! (with Bullocks being my absolute FAV british word!!) SO really NO OFFENSE! I just think he would sound TOO over the top for most of the American viewers…. AND YOU KNOW THAT IS WHO THEY ARE TRYING TO PLEASE IMO!!! But either way No offense, I just think he sounds better than even I expected one I heard BC was voicing him! It is NOW VD that I am worried about taking away from Groot!

  27. Just…yes. So awesome!

  28. hahahahahahaah totally just noticed Rocket fixing his crotch lololololol

  29. I literally had never heard of the Guardians before this movie and have no preconceived notion of what they should be, but as an avid film-watcher, I can only keep telling that they have gotten this so right.

It doesn’t matter that I have no idea about these guys. They made superb choices in making this film. The acting looks incredible, yet with the humorous tone, very balanced and levied with all that action. This will be an fantastic movie, and shows me a TON of promise with each new trailer. I’ve been drawn in for the long haul now. Great trailers, seemingly great story, I can only hope for the best for this awesome looking film.
