‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Trailer #2: Something Good, Something Bad

Published 11 months ago by , Updated May 20th, 2014 at 2:02 pm,

On Friday the embargo lifted on the first part of our Guardians of the Galaxy set visit coverage and we shared a lengthy and fun interview with Marvel’s newest star, Chris Pratt, who plays Peter Quill aka Star-Lord in the space-based adventure. We also shared a new poster and the news at the time that the long-awaited second full-length trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy would debut today, Monday May 19th, marking the second phase of the marketing push for the new property.

The debut occurred on the official Guardians of the Galaxy Facebook page after a Q&A session with director James Gunn and stars Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan. And leading up to the fan-focused social media event, each day over the weekend, Marvel released short 15-second teasers featuring brief glimpses of new action bits that’ll feature in the full-length trailer, and the voices of Drax the Destroyer (Dave Bautista) and Rocket Raccoon (Bradley Cooper).

One of these three videos even featured Groot, the large, walking tree, handing a flower to a little girl, emphasizing his role as the innocent member of the Guardians of the Galaxy roster, but we’ve yet to hear Vin Diesel voice the character’s three words: “I Am Groot.” Until now, that is.

The new trailer reveals quite a few additional details about the film, from Groot’s ability to grow roots, how Star-Lord’s mask and jet boots function, Ronan’s use of the Universal Weapon (his hammer staff), how the Nova Corps seemingly is forced to work with Star-Lord’s team of “losers” to save the planet Xandar (we also see the Milano hero ship leading a fleet of starships of the same design) and the space station known as ‘Knowhere’ which is inside the gigantic head of a Celestial (comic readers will be pleased to see that one).

We’ve yet to meet Michael Rooker’s blue-skinned Yondu character, one of the original Guardians of the Galaxy from Marvel Comics but we know his role is that of a father figure to Peter Quill (Pratt), and we still don’t know yet how the Nova Corps (led by John C. Reilly’s Rhomann Dey and Glenn Close’s Nova Prime Rael) will be adapted for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The official details hint that they might be a security force for the planet Xandar, but in the comics they protect and police the entire galaxy. They’re wearing very practical uniforms in the film, helmets and wrist-mounted blasters included, so we can’t tell if they have “super powers” like they do in the books and that may determine whether or not we’ll ever see characters like Richard Rider (the human character who becomes Nova Prime and had his own solo comics series) appear in the films or if there’s any chance of a Nova spinoff down the road.

Interestingly enough, the leaked description of the second GOTG trailer turned out to be 100% accurate.

Official Guardians of the Galaxy synopsis:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

  1. Looks great! Cant’ wait. :)

  2. Amazing trailer!! This movie is going to kick ass!

  3. Looking forward to the movie. My type of comedy, love it :)

  4. I am Groot!

  5. Doesn’t seem like my cup of tea. It seems to be a “serious” film in some parts, but childish and Disney-fied in others. I hope it succeeds so they can eventually bring in Nova and Quasar.

    • Not sure I get where the “disney-fied” statement is coming from. Disney is very hands-off, so they’re not influencing Marvel’s or Gunn’s choices…. and the GotG comics have a snarky, snide flair to them in the first place, so far the trailers have shown that Gunn have brought it to the film as well.

      • What I meant by “disney-fied” is cliche’d tropes that have already been shown 30 times over in superhero films (Marvel films specifically). I agree with what you said, but it’s just something about the direction that feels more cheesy like Iron Man 2, and less grown up like Thor 2 or even Cap 2.

        • I see where you’re coming from, but those same things brought a smile to my faces vs. your frown.

          • How many faces do you have, Ken? :)

            • That’s classified. Only level 8 and above S.H.I.E.L.D. operatives have clearance for that information.

              • *Hail Hydra*

            • Depends on if we’re talking about my faces or faces that are on or near me. wink wink.

        • @Mikeee

I agree with your general statement. I usually am not a major fan of the tone of these movies. I like darker stories from my CB properties.

      • Disney is in the business of making money so they are not hands off if they think something will not work.

    • Not sure that Rocket adjusting his balls would qualify as being “Disneyfied”

      • neither would the murder in all of the animated films. but disney was still involved.

        • We should pause for a moment to recognize all of the animated characters we have lost.

    • @mikeee, Yeah like Rocket scratching his crotch is so “Disney-fied.”

  6. awesome!

    love the song

  7. Sweet!! Aug. 1st cant get here any sooner

  8. This movie looks gorgeous.

  9. looks hilarious

  10. I’m so excited for this. I’m not a fan of the Star-Lord narration in this trailer, though. Feels cheesy and cheap. And I’m already in danger of getting sick of “Hooked on a Feeling.” But I was sold on this movie a long time ago, so it doesn’t really matter.

    • I can understand being sick of “hooked on a feeling,” but it’s literally the “hook” for this marketing campaign. Let’s the casual audience connect this trailer to the last one. As such, I think it’s smart. Same with the way they started within the same scene as the first trailer (the “Starlord” scene). Again, I think it’s very smart.
Most of us have practically bought our tickets already. They’re trying to reach a wider audience.

  11. Looking forward to this more than any other movie…So excited

  12. YES!!! I love that we get more Groot and Rocket in this trailer.

    “Ooooh Yeeeah!”

  13. Disappointing trailer. But thankfully trailers aren’t indicators for the actual movie.

    • I dunno, I find trailers generally indicate what the full movie will be like. Every trailer I haven’t liked, I haven’t liked the full film either. When I’ve loved a trailer, I’ve enjoyed the finished movie too.

I guess that’s why trailers exist, to give an indication of what the finished product will be like and gauge whether you’ll go see it or avoid it.

      • What is your take on “Cliffhanger”? One of the greatest trailers ever imo.

        • Cliffhanger is one of the greatest action films ever made. You bite your tongue!!!

          • Only watch it for Janine Turner myself then it’s over :)

          • I am in full agreement with you. Walker you resilient b’stard! Love it.

    • Yeah um…do they have a 3rd trailer in the works? LOL…Rocket didn’t even say but 1 line.

WELP, I tried to give it a shot. Good reviews will sway me though.

      • he had 2 lines. “Ohhhh Yeahhh”, and “ain’t no thing like me BUT me”.

  14. I guess the trailer description I read last month was 100% accurate then since everything it said would happen happened. Looks great and I love the voices of Groot and Rocket. I’m glad Dave seems to be talking in his usual voice too instead of trying to sound aggressive and such like others could have.

  15. I was sooo happy to see they’ve included Knowhere, the Celestial’s head base from the comics.

    • And it IS a Celestial Head in the film as well :)

      • Oh man…. that leads my brain to so many possibilities….Eternals, Deviants, etc. Who knows how far Marvel will go with it, but a boy can dream. Maybe it’ll go Knowhere ~

    • I totally missed that my first time through! Good catch.

  16. If this movie turns out to be as good as some expect it to be, it may put Marvel out of reach for those over at DC. The Marvel Cinematic Universe is light years ahead of anything DC. They can’t miss right now.

    • They can…and they have.

Hopefully, this film will be entertaining AND satisfying.

    • Just say it you hate DC and want them to fail. This appears to be the general sentiment of the comments here regarding these movies. They want DC to fail.

      • i don’t read that at all. in fact, of the 117 [thus far] comments posted on here, Chet Kincaid is the 1st one that even mentioned DC, and it certainly didn’t appear to wish ill-will on them. The M.C.U. is currently my favorite series of movies right now, with the DC.C.U. still in it’s infancy right now, they are a very close 2nd. here’s hoping MOS2, or SvB, or BvS, or whatever in the heck they are gonna call this thing, is successful.
i, like you, am also getting bored with this whole marvel vs dc thing. it’s as tiresome as the U of L/UK rivalry around here.

  17. Ahhh beautiful space.

    See you in August!

  18. This latest trailer confirms it; this will be a Space Comedy.

I’ll wait until the DVD release and watch it with apathy.

    • good!! its more fun without you hater nit picks in the theatre anyway!!

we have apathy for people like you who don’t know how to enjoy movies.

    • The comedy is just part of it. I mean, look at the group! However, each one has a good story behind them so you’ll have those dramatic moments as well. The comedic tones will hold the team :)

  20. Looks amazing! Cannot wait.

Anyone able to tell me the name of the song that plays after the Marvel logo?

    • Spirit In The Sky by Norman Greenbaum

  21. Looks pretty good

  22. Im liking the vibe of the Movie.. Looks like its gonna be a lot of fun! Bring a date, grab your popcorn and enjoy the ride

  23. Just can not wait. love reading ridiculous comments ripping this movie trailers because of the music, (which is perfect) and also complaining about a “space comedy”? sure looks like a perfect balance to me.

    See you August 1st

  24. So stoked for this movie! This is my #1 in anticipation for the summer.

  25. insane… i dont know how they could make it look any better… disney NEED to market this because it could gather avengers hype and it needs to succeed because this needs to make everyone believe the cosmic side will work. thanos is coming and this shouls get people into the space stuff

  26. “Might not be the best idea.”

    I like the self-deprecation.

  27. Groot is probably gonna bring the heart to the movie and rocket is gonna bring the badass to the movie. everyone is gonna finish this and hopeing rocket gets a solo movie hahaha

  28. A true list of B-Listers becoming A-Listers!

  29. Looks like fun. Really brings back that 80s feel of adventure films.
