[Update: Trades confirm Cooper in talks with Marvel.]

[Update 2: Bradley Cooper officially joins Guardians of the Galaxy.]

With Guardians of the Galaxy opening up the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the cosmic lore of the comics with an entirely new set of characters, and The Avengers: Age of Ultron introducing at least a few new heroes to moviegoers the following year, Marvel Studios is about to propel the careers of several new faces to the franchise.

Guardians of the Galaxy has been shooting in London since earlier this summer and while the principal cast – introduced on stage at Comic-Con in July – is cast, two of the most important (yet animated) characters have yet to find their voices. Is it possible we already know who’s voicing Rocket Raccoon and Groot?

The Guardians of the Galaxy comics have featured varied rosters of characters in the books but since officially confirmed at last year’s Comic-Con with the following concept art, we’ve know that two of the five heroes would be animated – Groot (the tree) & Rocket (the little furry guy).

Latino-Review claims to have inside knowledge that Marvel Studios has reached out to Bradley Cooper‘s people with an offer to voice Rocket Racoon in Guardians of the Galaxy. If the rumor is true and Cooper is to accept, that leaves the voice of his pal and fellow Guardian Groot still officially uncast.

Another high-profile star in Vin Diesel has been the center of much recent buzz surrounding Guardians of the Galaxy with confirmed news that he’s met with Marvel combined with his use of an image of Groot on his Facebook page. He’s even discussed the character and why he’d be interesting to play so it’s possible we already know who are playing the pair who in the story become best friends.

As for finding the right voice for Rocket Raccoon, the “heart” of the Guardians of the Galaxy team and film, writer and director James Gunn previously explained at the Iron Man 3 London premiere:

I think there’s – here’s the thing: there are a lot of people who have a lot of ideas of who is right for Rocket Raccoon  Rocket Raccoon has been slightly different over the years, in the comic books, and within my scripts he is a very, very specific guy, and I think people are going to have to wait for a few weeks before they see.”

Is Cooper the right guy to voice Rocket or would he make for a better live-action characters from the Marvel cosmos, like Adam Warlock (pictured in center of below image alongside Ronan the Accuser and several members of the Guardians)?

In other Marvel casting rumors, Elizabeth Olsen is apparently the frontrunner to play Scarlet Witch for Joss Whedon’s Avengers sequel.

Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn off of his script co-written by Nicole Perlman. It stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close.

Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.

Let me know on Twitter @rob_keyes who you think should voice Rocket!

  1. Internet will explode in 5…4…3…2…

  2. Bradley Cooper. Mr Cooper possibly voicing Rocket Raccoon eh? No problem with coop, but I wish it was Jason statham. Oh well, still can’t wait for this next summer.

    • YES! Jason Statham would be great!

  3. b*******.

  4. I kind of always liked Ray Winstone as the voice

    • Ray Winstone keeps soundly like a better choice after so many rumors of people that just don’t fit.

  5. Bradley Cooper is who I’d like to see play Doctor Strange

As far as Rocket that’d be ok….though I still am hoping that rumor awhile ago of David Tennant doing it are true.

    • B. Cooper could play a better comic book character, agree on Doctor Strange

      • As long as the director isn’t the rumored fede alvarez who directed the awful evil dead remake, Im game.

        • +1

    • Totally agreed!

    • And he could.

They would probably alter his voice a little, if only to keep the possibility alive down the line. It’s not as if Dr. Strange and Rocket Raccoon are going to have many one-on-one conversations.

  6. It could work and I could def get with it. But I guess it wasnt what I had in mind? I dunno, wrong voice-type for me.

  7. I would be perfectly happy with this.

At the top of the poster have names John C. Reilly, Djimon Hounsou, Glenn Close, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana, Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper.

  8. I gotta hear it. It’s not coming across well in my head lol

  9. Simon Pegg for Rocket Raccoon. Hell I wouldn’t mind him for Antman, but I think he has the perfect voice for RR.

    • I like the idea of Simon Pegg as the voice and Bradley Cooper as Adam Warlock.

      • Yep thats what I’m hoping :)

    • It’s bad enough Pegg ruined Scotty from Star Trek, 1000 time no for Rocket Raccoon!

      • They are 2 COMPLETELY different characters….

  10. I’ve always saw Bradley Cooper as a potential Hank Pym, he has a realy good balance of arrogance, troubled and comedic value

  11. It’s sad to admit but nowadays every time I see one of these new rumors come out and then see that it’s from Latino-Review, I immediately discard it.

    • I agree 1000%, I saw this article on LR about 2 hrs ago and immediately disregarded it but I did post a link in the last GOTG article, and A2 article!

They have the 2 biggest names playing cartoon characters?? WOW weird choices for Marvel, and I would be on board with VD voicing Groot but not on with BC doing RR, it just does not sound right in my melon!!

I think there are WAAAAY better choices here and across the pond, so please let El mayimbe be wrong yet AGAIN!! I am almost positive that his “sources” are a cpl of school-girls with an I-pad and wet panties!
THIS GUY NEVER goes with the “un-knowns” for anything that his “sources” come up with!

  12. Doesn’t Raccoon have a cockney accent in a lot of Marvel related media recently? He did in Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heros and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 anyway.

    • Yes it would be weird to have him have an american accent.

  13. Bradley cooper is coming off an oscar nomination, to play a cgi racoon or groot is just below him at this point. Strange is a
    More suitable choice

    • I don’t understand all the snobbish “below him/her” crap about certain actors. If it’s just a voiceover he’s doing, then who cares? Anybody who puts any stock in an Oscar as proof of the quality of an actor hasn’t seen ‘The Blindside.’

  14. On IMDB (which I know is not the end all be all) but for GOTG cast it has Vin Diesel as Groot!
Just as recently as last week it still said Enzo Caliente (Spelling I know) as the Rumored voice for Groot but now there is NO rumored after Vin’s name!!

I DO NOT WANT BC TO VOICE RR!! I have been outwardly against any British accent, ONLY because I thought there were JUST AS MANY good American voices…. BUT NOW PLEASE GET A BRIT!! PLEASE Marvel, not BC I just don’t think his voice will be the right fit

    • IMDB doesn’t have official info. Any user with premium account can change that. I can go in and say Vin Diesel is playing Gamora :)

      • Can you do that please? That’d be awesome!

      • Please do that, please. I will give you a pound if you do.

      • Thanks Rob,
I did not know that! I will just leave it up to SR and Rob Keyes to give me my info since it seems that NOBODY can give good info on anything except SR!!

  15. Although just like everyone else, I have certain names I was hoping to voice Rocket… Bradley Cooper? I (definitely) won’t mind XD…

But yeah, if he’s cast as Adam Warlock, I totally won’t mind as well!

  16. Well this casting rumor sure is random. I think it’d be a bit of a waste to use Cooper in a voice role though. There’s plenty of live action roles he’d be good for.

    • agreed

  17. I hope not, this makes no sense to me. Reading the comic, I definitely don’t think “Bradley Cooper” when RR speaks. Cooper seems much more likely to be playing someone like Adam Warlock. Of course, it is Latino Review, so I’ll take this “news” with a grain of salt.

  18. Waste the best looking man on the planet to a voice over? Especially when trying to bring women into the comic/marvel brand?? That would be madness!!

  19. i’m so on the fence about this entire movie. never read a guardians of the galaxy comic so i have no idea what to expect and maybe that’s a good thing. we all know how expectations can hurt a movie experience

    • *looks at iron man 3*

      • That had less to do with expectations and more with utterly destroying a beloved character. i.e. Mandarin

        • When did Mandarin become beloved? Oh yeah, that happened suddenly AFTER Iron Man 3.

          • Plus 1

  20. I really hope this is wrong. Bradley Cooper would help Marvel much more with a live action role (Adam Warlock I could see but not Dr. Strange). I have always pictured Rocket Raccoon with an Australian accent (definitely not British), at least that is how he was voiced in video games and TV shows. It seemed to work quite nicely I thought.

  21. “Bradley Coon-per?!”

  22. Ehh, I like Bradley Cooper and all but this is the wrong choice for RR. Like a few others have said, he’d be better suited to play a live action role like Adam Warlock.

    • Yeah, Cooper has Adam Warlock written all over him. I don’t buy this Racoon rumor.

      • +1

  23. i saw rise of the guardians with hugh jackman voicing the easter bunny, and i thought, “wolverine as RR? yes.”

  24. Cooper actually looks like a racoon… good choice.

    Or…

    Fassbender.

  25. Sure why not, you don’t want him sounding too old. It would work.

  26. This is silly,i think he is more suited to play Adam Warlock at best.Plus what ever happened to that rumor of him playing Lex Luthor? I would be all for that in the next Superman vs Batman movie.Sh*t I wouldn’t even mind seeing him play the Flash like many people wanted. But at this point Warlock or Luthor would be better choices especially Luthor imo.

  27. I think bradley cooper would be much better suited to play captain marvel later on. I’d like the idea of Jim Carey doing rocket. His accent in kick ass was great. And that, not so deep or heavy, is the accent I hear for rocket. Or even an austrailian type accent, which in that case cooper may be good if he can pull off an accent.Or the guy who played the crazy pioler I the A Team. He could pull off an austrailian accent that would work.

  28. Sharlto Copley as Rocket Racoon!

    • He really does not have to look like a raccoon by the way :)

  29. I can’t see Bradley voicing the Rocket or being a good fit for Dr. S, but I think he would make a good replacement in 10 plus years for RDJ when they reboot the Iron Man franchise. I’m still hoping for Viggo Mortensen for Dr. S. Also, I think he is a good fit for GL. I’ve read the GOG books and I found Rocket to be a great character because he is always pissed, short tempered, and has a chip on his shoulder. That leads to a lot conflict with the other characters, giving us the comic relief. Do I have a suggestion for the voice? No. Just not Bradley Cooper.
