New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Photos; Production Officially Wraps [Updated]

Published 10 months ago by

Fans who nabbed free tickets to the 17-minute exclusive IMAX preview for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy this evening at select locations will have lots of details to share beginning this evening, creating more buzz for the film just in time for our exclusive set visit interviews and coverage dropping tomorrow. With Guardians of the Galaxy just a few short weeks away, Disney and Marvel Studios are in their final phase of pre-release marketing so expect news, assets and more on a daily basis as director James Gunn and the cast soon begin their world press tour to promote the release.

Empire tossed up a few new “exclusive” images although most of them had been previously been revealed, including the first official close-up look at Lee Pace as the film’s antagonist, Ronan the Accuser. Take a closer look below and you’ll note that Disney had already released shots of Korath the Pursuer (Djimon Hounsou), the Dark Aster ship releasing smaller Necrocraft in the skies over the planet Xandar, and the behind-the-camera shot of Chris Pratt fully decked out as Star-Lord with his mask on.

Some of the new shots however, give some more spotlight attention to Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and her working with Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) and Drax (Dave Bautista). The most interesting shot is the behind-the-scenes photo of director James Gunn and his brother Sean Gunn who’s sporting a green motion-capture suit to bring Rocket Raccoon to life, long before Bradley Cooper was signed on to voice the role. He does play another character in the film so will get his due screen time as the right-hand to Michael Rooker’s blue-skinned Yondu character.

Share your thoughts on the page-to-screen adaptations of these Marvel Comics characters in the comments!

Update: James Gunn just timely posted that he’s wrapped on GOTG production so we can assume any post-credits buttons and last-minute picksups have been shot.

Update 2: Additional new (high-res) stills and photos from the Kyln space prison sequence, all featured in the 17-minute IMAX preview, to go along with our set visit coverage.

Update 3: Marvel filled out the rest of the collection of new Guardians of the Galaxy stills and behind-the-scenes photos with these new images:

  1. mmm.. not a lot good news today i see..mehh ,flopp

    • You think this movie is going to flop?

    • rolan claims to have seen an early screening and since then has trolled and said it was a bad movie, blah blah blah.

It’s like, if he did go and see it early and genuinely feels that way, say it when the film is out then run after leaving the comment and don’t bring it up again because the way he keeps saying the same thing over and over before the film’s even out for general release just screams “I’m secretly interested in this film but don’t want others to know”.

      • Personally, I hate Marvel films. Most of them are terrible movies, I wouldn’t even call them superhero movies, to me, they are comedies. There are only 2 GREAT Marvel movies: Cap 2, IM 1. But even I’m looking forward to this, just seeing that racoon and Groot together gets me excited. I hope this movie doesn’t flop, I’m betting it won’t.

        • I like them, the only one I haven’t liked was The Avengers and the rest….enjoyable but forgettable. IM1 is definitely the best, the others are all samey and about equal in my eyes (though my fave comic book film of 2014 so far is TASM2).

I loved Super though and having that guy write and direct this film helps a great deal. Even if it ends up feeling as samey as the others Marvel (and Fox) have released over the years, the humour Gunn injects will help me enjoy it for longer than I usually would.

    • Marvel is in control now!

    • aww, poor rolan…bleeding “down there” again are you?

      • Jeffro, think next time before you whip out your keyboard and dazzle us with your trolling skills.

Rolan has a feasible point here that this movie will bomb. Unlike the previous Marvel properties, Guardians of the Galaxy has a LOT working against it. GotG doesn’t have a previously established fan-base of any note. Also superhero movies played as comedies have a tendency to bomb at the box office. Green Lantern, Green Hornet, and the later Superman movies before Superman Returns all were turned into comedies then proceeded to bomb.

Also, only nerds and eight-year olds seem to be psyched at the whole “Rocket Raccoon” gig. I’ve only done convenience sampling (asking people I know) what they think of the trailers; they’re all unimpressed.

Therefore, I think Rolan is right.

        • Um, it “will” bomb or that you “think” it will bomb? Even if you feel you have substantial evidence or a logically sound theory behind it, unless you have a crystal ball that does more than distort the world when you look through it, neither one of you, or anyone else, can say that this “will” bomb…

        • Yeah, just like Iron Man 3 which had truckloads of comedy, it bombed as well…oh wait…

        • I went to the 17 minute preview yesterday, and the theater was packed with all sorts of people. The reaction was OVERWHELMINGLY positive. People were talking about wanting to see the preview again and how they couldn’t wait for the movie to come out (these were all casual moviegoers).

Anyway. Your little focus group that was unimpressed with the trailer is useless. This movie has a lot of buzz. I’ve also done sampling and gotten the opposite reaction. That’s got to be one of the most unreliable ways you could possible gauge large scale interest in the movie.

        • thanks ian. do you always greet people you just [met] with an insult?
i guess you’re new around here and have not witnessed rolans silly trolling antics. i only threw his repeated saying back at him. you will see eventually. i thought he only attacked marvel films, but he’s been on some DC articles spewing the same bile. you will catch on one day. i have to ask, as i do most people that seem to like reading an article about a movie they obviously have zero interest in, and even find it necessary to comment on it, and the question is why? why would you waste your obviously too precious time to read an article about about a movie that you just said “…only nerds and eight-year olds seem to be psyched at the whole “Rocket Raccoon” gig.”? why bother? that, to me at least, is the VERY definition of trolling. maybe i’m wrong.
and really, if you like star wars, is a raccoon and tree any more unbelievable than ANY of the creatures featured in the 6 [soon to be 7 and beyond!] star wars films?
one more thing. rolan made no “point”, or anything close to a valid comment. just “…meh, flopp [sic]” he can’t even debate why this will flop. neither can you for that matter. you based your dislike of this movie by what your friends think. way to be a sheeple dude.
          feel free to retort.

          • Don’t sweat it Jeffro…

Those of us who have been frequent screenranters know that rolan is a troll. I’m learning to just ignore him/her.

He is one of the biggest DC trolls I have ever seen.

Unfortunate cause I like DC properties also but rolan is giving DC fans a negative connotation.

Either way, let Ian be a lame-O too.

      • !so lame! this marvel fanboys never learn, the butthurt is strong in here.

        • i’m sorry to hear your butt hurts inside. been hanging around prison showers again?

        • Then stop dropping the soap dude!…

Maybe consider wearing a chastity belt rolan…

  2. So pumped!! Great report! I already bought my 3D IMAX ticket for July 31st!!!

    • …Why? Why can’t that guy be excited to see the movie? How does that affect or offend you?

    • I only ever pre-ordered a ticket once for The Dark Knight. That movie was packed but I haven’t seen any other films so full of people before or since so I generally just do what you say and turn up asking for a ticket on the day and always manage to get one and sit to a half-empty cinema (because films open on Thursday or Friday morning and most seem to go during the evening from Saturday onwards).

    • “Logic” – Lol are you 12? What an embarrassing display of jealousy.

That person wasn’t even bragging, they were just excited. They’re lucky to get an early ticket. I would be excited too if I did. Sit down and let them have their happiness.

      • Apologies, “Logic”. I was actually addressing “Bucky Barnes”. Misread the comment.

        • Hey man, no worries- It looks like when the article got updated, all of the comments got sent out of whack… which kind of makes the entire thread pointless.

    • I just saw the 17 minute preview footage today, looks pretty entertaining. :-)

  3. Ronan the Accuser looks Bad ass I gotta feeling Lee Pace is gonna own that role.

    • Huh?

He said Lee looked badass as Ronan, where was the criticism?

With that comment, you seem to be…..jumping the Gunn.

    • ummmm….he was complementing it… you sack

    • Annnnd how was the above comment a criticism?

    • Correct me if I am wrong, but you just criticized a guy who said that Ronan is going to be AWESOME in the movie? Wtf really? :/

    • Take your attitude to Ain’t It Cool News, where it belongs and don’t insult people for stating harmless opinions. Or in other words: grow up!

    • He should nail it, he is the only person playing Ronan!

      • “he is the only person playing Ronan!” …????????????

  4. Chris Pratt rocking the Smallville red jacket… :P

  5. Really looking forward to this movie, looks like is going to be amazing

    • Amazing? Really?

      It looks AWESOME!!

      #EverythingIsAwesome #GoHashYourOwnTag #Browns

      • Yeah man. The 17 minute preview was amazeballs.

  6. Can you teach us, oh wise one?

Wait, your gimmick is to be all gruff and stuff, isn’t it?

  7. Please lead by example…

  8. Screenrant been attracting weirdos lately..

    • Says the guy trolling others and posting crap? Ok.

Meh, your comments will disappear anyway when Paul gets the time so enjoy yourself while it lasts, Bucko.

      • I would like to apologize for my former child sidekick. He was frozen for a few decades so the ‘terrible-teens’ are just now kicking in. (Shrugs)

  9. Am I the only one who thinks that Ronan looks like he went a little crazy with the steak sauce at TGI Fridays?

    • It does look like he face-planted burnt BBQ sauce. Or tar.

      • LoL it does, It looks cool but I can’t help but think he might just be clutz when it comes to eating lol.

      • LOL it does look like he went to town on a full rack of ribs.

        • Oh my god this ()&(* is brilliant I can picture it now, Ronan sitting on his pedestal, the camera pans around him and we see him downing a bowl of ribs like Golum from the LOTR.

          • The look on his face clearly says he wants more.

  10. Dude Bucky, what is with you being such a dueschy troll today? Find something better to do.

  11. You funny :-@

  12. So yeah, less than a month to go now. All right!

What I’m most excited for is the post-credits.

I really hope the Avengers 3 post-credits shows the cocoon hatching in The Collector’s vault.

  13. Lol this comment section is insane…

Batista looks smaller than he did years ago. Can’t be any more than 230 lbs in these pics.

    • Haha, yeah, he’s definnitely lost the muscle mass and got leaner. Probably the MMA training he did, made his fight debut in October 2012 if I recall correctly with a win but for a guy in his early 40s, he still looks good considering.

It’s like Brock Lesnar, he went from 295lbs to 260 when he jumped to UFC and had to lose more weight when he had that intestinal virus thing that almost killed him and forced him to retire from MMA.

  14. I saw just the 17th minute IMAX preview.
I was laughing my ass of the entire time and the visuals were pretty amazing.
    This movie rocks guys.

    • *17 minute, idk where that lispy ‘th’ came from lol

      • I’ll have the crithpy duck with eckthtra theathoning and the thpethial thauthe if you pleathe. Go Guardianth!

        • Well played dazz. Had me rolling haha

  15. Guardians of the Galaxy 2 is for July 5th 2017 right with Inhumans the same year . End credits will show us Black Bolt standing next to Medusa as they look towards Earth

    • He of course sneezes and breaks the glass, causing him and Medusa to get sucked into space where they’re bodies crash into kid’s birthday party, the Marvel film that follows will be about trying to figure out what the heck happend. :D

    • Guardians of the Galaxy 2 and The Inhumans in 2017 would go well with the one sequel and one new property every year, but that would mean no Thor 3 in phase 3, which I am not sure it will be the case.

This is for me the base case:

      Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
      Ant Man (2015)
      Captain America 3 (2016)
      Dr. Strange (2016)
      Thor 3 (2017)
      The Inhumans (2017)
      The Avengers 3 (2018)

Although perhaps there are surprises at Comic Con and we learn phase 3 is longer and Avengers 3 doesn’t happen until 2019 so we get two more movies in phase 3. Will see.

  16. saw the sneak peek today and it was amazing. I can’t wait for this movie to come out. 3d IMAX is definitely the way to see it

  17. i guess a trolls comments got deleted because some of these comments have no context.

  18. I can’t wait to see this film!!!

  19. sadly i couldnt get tix for the preview. i’m sure it will show up online.

  20. I wrote a spoiler-free review article on the 17 minute preview for anyone interested:,manual, manual#!baBpjx

  21. This movie could make more than Avengers and with the perfect success, James Gunn and Joss Whedon can team up for Avengers 3: Earths Mightiest Heroes. Man I’m so amped the last movie I saw in theaters was Transformers 3

    • god ,drugs in america. mehhh.

      • Hey rolan, are you still there? I was just wondering what you make of all these positive early reviews so far?

  22. I know advertising pays for this website, but, sheesh those Coca Cola banners are annoying.

  23. Thats true maybe we’ll be suprised and get:
    Age of Ultron 2015
    Antman 2015
    Cap3 2016
    Doc Strange 2016
    Thor 3 2017
    Inhumans 2017
    Hulk Movie 2018
    Avengers 3 2018
    Avengers 4 2019(part 2)
    The Runaways 2019
    The Invincible Iron Man(reboot) 2020
Captain America(with Bucky Barnes as Cap) 2021
    Black Panther 2021
    The Almighty Thor(reboot) 2022
    Ms. Marvel 2022
    The Next Avengers 2023
    Invincible Iron Man 2 2024
    The Submariner Fall 2024
    The Runaways 2 2024
    Hulk/Thor: Avengers United Summer 2025
    Black Panther 2 Summer 2025
    Sorcerer Supreme 2026
Next Avengers2: Wrath of Ragnorok 2026
    Invincible IronMan 3 Summer 2027
    The Runaways 3 Summer 2027
    Cap2(reboot sequel) 2028
    The Inhumans X 2028
The Next Avengers: War of the Worlds Summer 2028
And that’s how Marvel will do Phases 1-9 hahahah

  24. Can’t wait for this to come out I’ve been on broad since they announced they were making it with James Gunn. Saw the 17 mins at IMAX last night and all I can say is WOW. This is a must see in IMAX. This is the first marvel studio movie to come with out the name recognition and peoples preconceived notations of what they are going to see and in my opinion they did a great job. If Antman and other lesser known off the walls titles are made as a part of the cinematic universe and are half as good as GOTG the marvel will continue to have success passed the Avengers.

  25. Am I the only one who doesn’t like how Ronan looks? His face is, off.
