After promoting the next two Phase Two films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige introduced Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to the Hall H stage of the San Diego Convention Center. He brought not only the cast of the film directly from London where they were shooting that morning, but some revealing footage that introduced all of the film’s heroes and a few of the supporting cast.
Outside of Chris Pratt’s lead character Peter Quill joking around and calling himself “Star-Lord” most of the dialogue from the Guardians of the Galaxy footage played during the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con over the weekend featured John C. Reilly and another actor playing two Nova Corps guards on a space prison, describing the inmates.
The video – cut together just for Comic-Con attendees – was based on only 13 days of shooting and a month of special effects work. In addition to revealing the live-action designs of the five leads featured in the old and new Guardians of the Galaxy concept art, the clips also heavily featured Nova Corps, the space police (wearing the uniform seen above, sans the helmet) of the Marvel cosmic universe. The footage confirmed John C Reilly’s role as Rhomann Dey, a key member of Nova, and introduced another member, but one actor we really wanted to see wasn’t present: Glenn Close.
Dey’s role in the clips we saw was to essentially introduce the characters to the audience, and joining him in his scenes was British actor Peter Serafinowicz, who confirmed his presence via Twitter.
I just saw the Guardians of the Galaxy Comic Con trailer - wow it looks fantastic! 12-yr-old me can't believe I'm in it— Peter Serafinowicz (@serafinowicz) July 23, 2013
Re Guardians, I'm a Nova Corps Officer with John C Reilly.— Peter Serafinowicz (@serafinowicz) July 23, 2013
As for Glenn Close, when she was cast, reports indicated she had signed on for a “leadership role” in Nova Corps, a role we theorized could be a variation of the Adora, Queen of Xandar character from Marvel Comics. While her character wasn’t revealed in the footage, Marvel sent out an official press release after introducing some of the the cast on stage which specifically listed six-time Oscar nominated Glenn Close as playing Nova Prime – the highest Nova rank. Nova Corps is the police force based on the planet Xandar and in the Marvel Comics, Rhomann Dey is Nova Prime and the love interest of Adora. He eventually hands his powers over to a human named Richard Rider, a character long-rumored to be a future part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Could we see Dey take up the Prime mantle from Close’s character during the film and will Richard Rider be introduced?
Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn off of his script co-written by Nicole Perlman. It stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close.
Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014, The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.
