After promoting the next two Phase Two films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige introduced Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn to the Hall H stage of the San Diego Convention Center. He brought not only the cast of the film directly from London where they were shooting that morning, but some revealing footage that introduced all of the film’s heroes and a few of the supporting cast.

Outside of Chris Pratt’s lead character Peter Quill joking around and calling himself “Star-Lord” most of the dialogue from the Guardians of the Galaxy footage played during the Marvel Studios panel at Comic-Con over the weekend featured John C. Reilly and another actor playing two Nova Corps guards on a space prison, describing the inmates.

The video – cut together just for Comic-Con attendees – was based on only 13 days of shooting and a month of special effects work. In addition to revealing the live-action designs of the five leads featured in the old and new Guardians of the Galaxy concept art, the clips also heavily featured Nova Corps, the space police (wearing the uniform seen above, sans the helmet) of the Marvel cosmic universe. The footage confirmed John C Reilly’s role as Rhomann Dey, a key member of Nova, and introduced another member, but one actor we really wanted to see wasn’t present: Glenn Close.

Glenn Close Nova Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy: Glenn Close & Peter Serafinowicz Nova Roles Confirmed

Dey’s role in the clips we saw was to essentially introduce the characters to the audience, and joining him in his scenes was British actor Peter Serafinowicz, who confirmed his presence via Twitter.

As for Glenn Close, when she was cast, reports indicated she had signed on for a “leadership role” in Nova Corps, a role we theorized could be a variation of the Adora, Queen of Xandar character from Marvel Comics. While her character wasn’t revealed in the footage, Marvel sent out an official press release after introducing some of the the cast on stage which specifically listed six-time Oscar nominated Glenn Close as playing Nova Prime – the highest Nova rank. Nova Corps is the police force based on the planet Xandar and in the Marvel Comics, Rhomann Dey is Nova Prime and the love interest of Adora. He eventually hands his powers over to a human named Richard Rider, a character long-rumored to be a future part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Could we see Dey take up the Prime mantle from Close’s character during the film and will Richard Rider be introduced?

Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn off of his script co-written by Nicole Perlman. It stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close.

  1. All sounds good! Hope they set up Nova for Future films!

  2. it would be cool to introduce richard rider but no overkill because there
are alot of characters and alot of story to cover just in the first guardians movie. xmen 3 and the new xmen movie coming out next year already
has market cornered on overbloating their movies with too many new and old
characters whose prescence amounts to nothing.

  3. Wouldn’t Starlord and Nova sort of compete for screen time? Kid Nova is a superman-type, flying and indestructible and Starlord a mercenary with gadgets and guns, but they are both leader-archetypes.

who would lead the guardians? And throw in Adam Warlock, yondu, vance astro and Starhawk… they’re no shortage of cooks in the kitchen.

    • From what I understand from the reports they are toning down the Nova Corps somewhat to make them more of a traditional police-force, albeit with super powers. I don’t think they will main characters, so much as they’ll just be there to be the good-guy Storm Troopers of the Marvel universe.

    • my gosh, vance astro by himself would make a good story. lots of folks dont even realize that this batch of the guardians of the galaxy is not the original ones, nevertheless they are all great characters.

    • Nova has always worked closely with the Guardians and he is best friends with Quill, probably bc they are both from Earth. I just hope they have Warlock in this movie. He is the best character of them all.

  4. Would’ve been better if the original CaptainMarvel or Adam Warlock was introduced

    • I live in a town named Sibley.

  5. I am guessing that they will leave Nova (Richard Rider) out of it but that it will lead to a Nova movie because all of the frame work will be already in place.
I think that Marvel is setting it up to have multiple sets of Phases. There will be the Avengers/ Earth set (Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Thor, Shield, Ant-man, Daredevil, Heroes for Hire, Black Panther), a Cosmic set (GotG, Nova, Inhumans, Adam Warlock, Captain Marvel) and a Magic/ Supernatural set (Doctor Strange, Blade, Ghost Rider, Midnight Sons).
They will have loose connections between the 3 sets (some cross overs and mentions) but will mostly focus on just their specific sets.

  6. Is the image at the top the Nova outfit for the film?

    • Yup, at least for the Nova prison guards. John C. Reilly & Peter Serafinowicz both wore that costume in the footage, but without the helmnets.

      • Hopefully Dey will be a Gold Dome like in the comics!

        • Cheers Rob
Good to know these are the costumes that were shown in the footage
given how good the costumes have been in marvels films thus far, the chest part isn’t as sweet as I was hoping, but it works for prison guards
I guess that it looked good in the footage though

  7. Marvel certainly has it going on.. they have the number one comic book
movie 4 years straight (2010-2013). since they came onto the scene in 2008. only in 2008 and 2009 (no release) they did not finish in first place comic book moviewise.

  8. Nova comes to earth Richard Rider and joins the New Warriors! Yeah baby!

  9. “Could we see Dey take up the Prime mantle from Close’s character during the film?”

LOL Rob, I posted that question in the previous Guardians thread. Great minds think alike!

Blue Blazes!!! The Nova Corps Guard Uniform looks sick! Can’t wait to see the Gold Domes!!!

    • Nice! :)

      • After examining the uniform from other pictures I’ve found, I’m starting to think those are the Gold Domes. From the side, the gold lining is very visible from afar. The helmet can be a cross between the Gold Dome and the (Supposed) Covert Ops Helmet.

Sam = (Supposed) Covert Ops Uniform

Rich = Gold Dome Centurion Uniform

That pic you have there may very well be a Nova Centurion. I wonder what will go over their mouth and neck for within space.

and if it is nothing more than a Guard’s uniform, they’re all gonna look badass either way.

  10. I bet we end up finding out that Glen Close’s character, Nova Prime, is secretly working for Thanos…once they “defeat” her somehow Dey will take the mantle as Nova Prime

Glen Close is awesome at playing villains and shes only signed on for a one picture deal…you heard it here first..she’s Thanos’ pawn

  11. Those Nova Corps costumes look… pretty cheap. Especially he helmets :(

    • AGREE ! … Looks like Judge Dredd`s custome

      • Right on the money. I just remembered what it was they reminded me of, and it is a Judge’s helmet. Seems like someone’s been watching a certain film set in Mega-City One.

    • I thought that too, but hopefully they are just guards helmets, and even then maybe get polished up a bit in post.

  12. has anyone seen the pics of Star Lords mask?? HOLY S**T it looks awesome!!

Im getting more and more stoked for this movie!!
IM still really wanting to hear who will voice RR, I really hope that announcement come SOON!!

How about it Rob, do you think they will announce it soon or do you think they will keep it a secret until the movie is released?

    • Hell yea!! Did you see Drax’s knives too?

  13. This is great news! I knew they’d have to at least set up Nova and the Corps in this one. I truly hope this movie does well enough to warrant a sequel.

  14. The costume and helmet up there looks like something from 80′s sci-fi B movies.

    • Dey’s 1st appearance in 1976 looked kind of like space ghost. This is an upgrade.

  15. Glenn Close is a pretty good actress; she will do well in her part.

  16. Armie Hammer as Richard Ryder/Nova!!!!

    • Oh hell yea! He’s a good choice! Garrett Hedlund would be awesome too!
