Captain Mar Vell Marvel Comics Rumor Patrol: Guardians of the Galaxy Villain is Thanos Henchman

We’ve known since first appearing after the credits in The Avengers that Thanos would have a big role to play in Phase Two, and possibly Phase Three, of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. We also know from the words of Thanos creator Jim Starlin, that the Mad Titan would be involved with Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2, although not necessarily serving as the primary antagonist in each.

So, when Earth’s first line of defense finally join together on screen forming the Cosmic Avengers, who exactly might they be protecting our planet against?

Latino-Review, the original source behind the Guardians of the Galaxy scoops – before it was announced at last summer’s Comic-Con – and the first breaker of the news that Tony Stark would command the Iron Legion in Iron Man 3, now has uncovered a key detail pertaining to the story of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Marvel’s riskiest film to date is being written and directed by James Gunn, and it begins production this summer in London. The casting process is well underway with Chris Pratt signed to lead the feature as Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord and wrestler-turned-actor Dave Bautista joining the franchise to play Drax the Destroyer. Together, they and the other Guardians may be battling Basil Sandhurst AKA The Controller.

The Controller Marvel Comics Rumor Patrol: Guardians of the Galaxy Villain is Thanos Henchman

In Marvel Comics, Sandhurst was a human scientist whose unethical methods and bad temper had him blacklisted in the research community. Like many superheroes, Sandhurst became more than a normal person when a lab experiment went awry thanks to his brother. To save Sandhurst, the brother set him up with a special lab that revived his body with an exoskeleton that allowed him to overcome his physical disabilities. As a result, Sandhurst became “The Controller” with superhuman strength and the ability to control minds through tech he created, and began his evil plot by attacking New York, as if they hadn’t had enough supervillain issues.

Here’s where it gets interesting. The Controller’s plans were foiled by none other than Tony Stark and S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Jasper Sitwell, who of course, in the films are played by Robert Downey Jr. and Maximiliano Hernandez, respectively. Hernandez was introduced as Sitwell with a minimal role in Thor, followed by key parts in the Marvel One-Shots The Consultant and Item 47. He returns as Sitwell in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and will likely have a role in the film franchise for years to come.

Stark on the other hand, has been rumored for weeks now to have connections to Guardians of the Galaxy, thanks in no small part to the fact that in the Marvel NOW! comics relaunch, he’s a full-fledged member of the team and in Iron Man 3 he has armor that can fly into space. Rumor has it that after the credits, Stark may head to space to meet the Guardians of the Galaxy or at the very least, Star-Lord, and that he’d also appear in some small capacity in that film the following year- possibly the smartest marketing tool they could employ to help raise the profile of the studio’s space-faring epic.

What is Thanos up to?

What does The Controller have to do with the Guardians? After he was defeated, big bad Thanos broke The Controller out of prison and made him stronger, promising him reign over Earth in exchange for service. He battled The Avengers and Captain Mar-Vell but ultimately lost. Mar-Vell of course, is another name in the long list of key characters (see: Nova) fans speculate could be involved in Guardians of the Galaxy or The Avengers 2 so perhaps The Controller has an even larger role to play for years to come should this rumor prove true.

There are a lot of deep ties to interconnected stories involving many of the characters we already met on screen and are going to meet soon in Phase Two, so stay tuned into Screen Rant for more information as we learn it.

Guardians of the Galaxy is being rewritten and directed by James Gunn and begins shooting in London this summer. It will be released in 3D. Expect many casting news reports shortly.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and Doctor Strange sometime after that.

  1. Ron Keyes……the hardest working man in the movie scoop business!!!
    Great job once again!
    Keep it coming!!

    This sounds very cool.

    • Rob*

      • right. I fat fingered it.

        Rob Keyes.

  2. I have no idea who the Controller is.
But if this news comes from Latino-Review, I’ll take the rumor with a grain of salt for now.

    • The Controller is one of my nefarious bosses at the Wal-Mart where I work.

  3. I’ve been saying Thanos won’t be the villain being fought in The Avengers 2 since The Avengers released here in April 2012. Therefore, not surprised that – as I suspected – Thanos will get his hands dirty in The Avengers 3 while someone else is the big bad in Avengers 2 in his place.

I just expected it to be Ultron but The Controller would suffice. There’s some huge scope there with different members in different areas all having to fight his mind-controlled weapons until he’s finally defeated (by a Phase 3 debutante such as Ant-Man?)

  4. Add to this, the rumors of Zoe Saldana in talks to play Gamora

    • Cynthia Addai-Robinson (Naevia in Spartacus) would be great in the role too.

Then again, I still think Todd Lasance should be a movie version of Green Arrow and Kaiwi Lyman should be a movie version of Aquaman so what do I know?

      • Not sure we really need a Oliver with a big beard now and Lasance is kind of baby face. I don’t like Lyman, he could be great for a “Crocodile Dundee meets Baywatch” movie though.

    • Did some digging and she is apparently in talks.

  5. There’s another GotG rumor now that says Zoe Saldana is in negotiations to play Gamora (the news comes from The Hollywood Reporter apparently)

    • She doesn’t have the right build for the part

  6. Who is this Ron Keyes you speak of?

    • I get spam email for an older gentleman named named Ron Keyes.

  7. Anywhoo, I can’t wait until we see the first trailer for this. This is my second most anticipated Marvel movie that’s slated to come out

  8. Ok question, I’ve never read comics but ive enjoyed the wave of superhero moveis coming out. GotG just sounds like Avengers in space (especially with the addition of that Nova squad) why is there a need for tony stark or even Captain America in the upcoming “cosmic” phase of Marvel. the only way that shield, Hulk, Cap, and Iron Man would ever be involved would be in another alien invasion which sounds like just a regurgitation of the first Avengers movie. With so many other worlds supposedly, what makes earth like the main target for Thanos, just the tessauract (spelling)?

    • movies*

    • Just wait for the movie dude.

    • We don’t know. There are loads of story options they could pull from the comics for The Avengers 2.

  9. That would be cool if Zoe Saldana ends up being cast as Gamora. Shes sexy and a good actress

    • She’s pretty snuggly, too, but….oh, I know I shouldn’t kiss and tell….!

    • I like here but she doesn’t have the right build for the part

  10. Just started reading the reboot of guardians and the transfer to film Will be awesome. I’m a dc guy but fell in love with gotg with annihilation wars. Really excited for the books and can’t wait for the film. Keep giving us updates.

    • Annihilation and what followed was amazing.

  11. What about Blastaar and Ronan the Accuser? They’d make great villains.

  12. I know nothing about the character, but from the sounds of it, The Controller is rather lame. Mind-controlling people against one another? Loki already did that. Hope James Gunn will pick his villain wisely.

    • Completely agree. Really hope this doesn’t turn out to be true.

  13. It makes total sense to have Tony Stark/Iron Man show up in GotG. The article is right; why not use the most popular superhero and the face of the Marvel universe to give your riskiest movie franchise a boost, and some added support? Adding RDJ would certainly do that.
Smart move by Marvel, yet again.

  14. Someone names “Basil” is probably not much of a threat. Still, he is fighting a raccoon and a tree…..!

    • Dude, now you’re just entering troll territory.

I accept that you have a different opinion when it comes to this movie, which is why I don’t engage in arguments with you when you post something negative about GotG (which is on ALL the articles), but seriously, this is getting kinda ridiculous don’t you think?

Now you’re just flat out bashing characters and stories that you haven’t even seen in action yet.

      • Sorry to keep going on about it, but I just want to say one more thing:

The movie IS happening. They aren’t going to stop production because you think it’s a waste of time. You haven’t read the script, you don’t know the vision that Gunn & Marvel have for the picture, and as far as I can tell, you don’t really know much about the characters/source material either (if any of this isn’t true, I apologize).

If you really loved The Avengers so much, show a little faith man, or at the very least, try to settle down with the GotG bashing (maybe just do it on every other GotG article or something)

Oh, and I’ll have you know, my second name is Basil! ;)

        • They’re still a talking tree and a talking raccoon.

          • Actually Groot doesn’t say a whole lot but aside from that…….So? Not really seeing the point.

          • Yeah, so? I had seen a lot of Disney movies with little talking animals and I’ll keep seeing them, they are cute.

            • Like I’ve said before, how is Guardians any stupider than Star Wars? Someone explain how its any dumber than an effeminate droid, a droid that beeps, a growling wookiee, and a little green Jedi (who is actually a badass)
DISCLAIMER: I don’t think Star Wars is dumb.

              • @CaptainAmerica

GREAT POINT. It probably won’t be greeted favorably or with level-headedness, but a good point. If someone came with that idea for 2014, most fan boys, sites, blogs and critics would probably think it is the silliest thing to ever be thought of.

  15. The Guardians Marvel NOW! comic takes place near Earth’s orbit. Iron Man has joined them because of already meeting with them on Earth, in Avengers Assemble. The Guardians Movie takes place in a different galaxy, it wouldn’t make sense for Iron Man to be apart of the team in the Guardians movie, when they haven’t joined forces with the Avengers yet.

    • Different universes dude…the movie story lines are separate, but take inspiration from the comics.

      • Even still, Iron Man is light years behind in having the right tech to fast travel to a different galaxy.

  16. Speaking of villains for Avengers #2, how about Kang, Ultron, Skrulls, and Whirlwind (The Human Top)?
Oh, and I suppose we might need a few heroes, so I vote for Goliath (hank Pym), Wasp, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch!

    • save ultron/ kang for avengers 3

      • Need Ultron for 2 so Vision can become an Avenger for 3.

    • After watching The Avengers:Earth’s Mightiest Heroes,I would LOVE to see Kang.

I remember seeing him here and there in the comics when I was younger and I thought he was pretty lame, but that cartoon really changed my mind about him.

  17. ” We also know from the words of Thanos creator Jim Starlin, that the Mad Titan would be involved with Guardians of the Galaxy and The Avengers 2, although not necessarily serving as the primary antagonist in each.”

Can I just say that as much as I love Marvel, I will get very pissed if they just tease Thanos continually…

    • What did you expect after 6 straight movies with teasers? Get used to it, Marvel loves the constant use of teasers; and trust me, I dislike it as well. Phase 1 teasers all pointed towards The Avengers and after Iron Man 2, I sat there and said “Okay, we get it, an Avengers movie is coming. In case you haven’t found out by now”

      • Guess what. If you knew it was coming, then you didn’t have to sit through it at all. That’s why they’re at the end. Next to no one sits through normal credits anyway, so unless you got handcuffed to you chair why the heck did you let your self “suffer” through it just to come b!%(# to us about it.

        • Okay, for one, I never said suffer. You’re putting words in my mouth. I dislike it. I don’t hate it, I don’t despise it, I don’t “suffer” because of it. I DISLIKE it.

Word of the day, kids: “opinion”. An opinion is a perspective you have on something and it’s okay for an opinion to differ from someone else’s.

But sometimes, we get something called a “fanboy”.

          (audience begins to boo)

Now now, settle down people. A fanboy is a person so protective of an opinion that he must block out everyone’s opinion that isn’t in agreement with him by insulting and occassionally fibbing.

          • Oh, I get it… like Goldilocks.

  18. Either a very late April Fools joke or the worst idea ever behind the idea of making a Guardians of the Galaxy movie in the first place.

  19. If I may say. I’ve read A LOT of the Marvel comics. I’m a huge fan of the movies as well. They have done quite well with the movies. To me it’s smart on Marvel’s part by having Robert Downey Jr. take a spot as Tony Stark/Iron Man in GoTG for a few reasons. First, it helps boost the movie up for those who hasn’t read the comics and don’t know who the GoTG are. Second, it makes the story more interesting and people would love to see what happens. Last, it could help carve a path for Avengers 2. Maybe Tony Stark could be part of the Secret Ending for GoTG. Also I think they are taking this slowly with Thanos probably not taking a huge role until Avengers 3 for different reasons. One it’s possible they want more Marvel movies afterward such as Avengers 4,5,6. Some of you may think I’m crazy, but it just depends on how this will work out. We can only hope and see.

  20. Could the Controller already be within the marvel universe … maybe within iron man 3 … maybe Guy Pearce! (forgive me but who is he playing in Iron Man 3 I cant recall?) the similarities between him and Tony Starks new iron legion abilities do seam kinda similar and if they are to try and introduce Guardians in this movie … why cant we already have introduced within this one as well … before he goes evil etc etc …

    • I would not be surprised if this is the case.

  21. Once I read “Latino Review” I stopped reading.

    • hehe, 2 points

  22. So before we meet Guardians we could see how Iron Man and Sitwell stop The Controller before he Thanos makes him stronger so he can battle Guardians?
Now that would be freakin awesome.
To have Iron Man for only first five minutes of the movie would boost ticket sales.
I think that is the smartest move they can make.

  23. James Gunn….the man who brought us Scooby Doo, Slither, Super, and a host of other things I never bothered to watch…wow…this is gonna be great…(did I mention that he created and wrote something called “PG Porn”…yeah…)

    • Slither is pretty solid the others not so much imo. not to mention his scene in movie 43 was horrific and the worst display of comedy I have ever seen. that being said doesn’t mean he cant turn it around. he defininetly isnt a strong point like shane black or whedon.

  24. If we have Ultron we’d have to have Ant-Man first, who isn’t getting a movie till November 2015, after The Avengers 2. I think we should have The Masters of Evil for The Avengers 2, I don’t know who for GOTG.

    • They don’t necessarily need to have an Ant-man movie first for Ultron to be the baddie in Avengers 2.

Avengers 2 could easily feature Hank Pym as a scientist who creates a robot for the military/SHIELD (or maybe just to help improve people’s lives) – things go wrong (since Ultron is based on Pym’s brain patterns… which is never a good thing to do if you have mental problems) – call in the Avengers to save the day. Maybe Pym’s regret for creating this monster even encourages him to help out by dawning the Ant-Man suit he’s been working on as aside project?

Then they have the ‘Ant-Man’ movie a few months later that tells a solo Ant-Man story. It could take place after the events of TA2 where Lang steals the suit Pym created in TA2, or maybe (if Pym never became Ant-Man in TA2), they could tell his origin story of becoming Ant-Man there.

To me that would actually be a really cool thing to see (since we’ll get Stark, Banner and Pym in one movie taking on Ultron), and since EVERYBODY and their grandma knows The Avengers by now, having Pym/Ant-Man introduced in TA2 would be a great way to “sell” a relatively unknown (and arguably “lame”) character to the general audience.

Besides, it’s not like these movies are released in chronological order anyway (Cap was released after most of the others, but takes place in WW2, and TIH was the second movie Marvel Studios released, but in the continuity, the largest part of it takes place after IM1, IM2, THOR and Cap).

    • That’s true. Like you said, after the whole Ultron plan goes crazy he could be inspired to build the Ant-Man suit and go into full-on superhero mode. Maybe the mid-credits scene for TA2 could be hank looking over the Ant-Man suit plans. Who knows.

  25. I think having iron man in guardians defeats the purpose of risk. iron man cant be in every new film that doesnt have captain america or thor

    • He won’t be a main character in it, assuming he shows up at all. Could be a post-credits thing.

I’m thinking Guardians and Iron Man 3 take place at the same time in the movie timeline and the endings of each cross over in post-credits. Not unlike The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 2 and Thor all happening at the same time.

  26. This seems like a guess work rumor, some of these sites just seem to be picking characters out of old issues of the Handbook to the Marvel Universe. If they wanted to go with an obscure character there are much cooler ones to use in my opinion.

  27. Sadly still no Hulk !

  28. Why is gotg being rewritten?

  29. That’s funny. I was just looking at old Iron Man comicbook covers online and I was wondering about this guy who looks like Thanos and calls himself the Controller.
