The upcoming sequels Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier all have their principal casts locked down, and in some cases, are mostly done filming, but joining them in the next two years of Phase Two of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is newcomer Guardians of the Galaxy.

James Gunn is rewriting the screenplay and directing Guardians but the casting process is just beginning and there five names up for the lead role of Peter Quill, including Lee Pace.

Pace earned a lot of recognition for his starring role in the short-lived Pushing Daisies and has since being bolstering his profile in increasingly larger film projects, the latest of which include Lincoln, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2 and next week’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

On the red carpet doing press for The HobbitMTV caught up with Pace and asked him about being a contender for part of Peter Quill/Star-Lord in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.

“I go in on Monday to meet them all and audition for it, so wish me luck. I’m very excited about it. The script is great. The character is a lot of fun.”

“I have been [reading up on Star-Lord]. You want to know what you’re doing. The character is a lot of fun. I hope it works out… I’ve got to audition. I’ve got to go get it. I actually love auditioning, so I’m happy to go meet them all and do it.”

The film will be drawing inspiration from the 2008 Marvel Comics relaunch of the Guardians of the Galaxy written by sci-fi specialists Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning who began paving the path for the team (re)formation in the two space-faring miniseries Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest (highly recommended reads).

The team which includes – from the concept art - Drax the Destroyer, Groot, Rocket Racoon and Gamora will be lead by Star-Lord, who from the Guardians of the Galaxy logline, is “a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”

In addition to Pace, the reported shortlist for the role of Peter Quill/Star-Lord includes Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess and Eddie Redmayne. Other names, including James Marsden, were mentioned but we do not know for what roles. It’s important to note that some of these talents could secretly be audition for other roles as well, potentially even in other films. We previously listed Pace and Edgerton as suggestions for the role as Ant-Man.

  1. Once again, I trust all involved to make the correct choice. I’m so looking forward to this movie, I wish it was coming out this year! :/

  2. Jensen Ackles would be a pretty badass starlord. Btw Simon Pegg for the voice of Rocket Raccoon…just an idea.

    • I’d like to see Jensen Ackles in the movie, i think he would fit

    • Jensen could’ve been a great Steve Rogers / Capt. America, but yes, I agree, he’d be a badass StarLord. As for Rocket Raccoon, I still want Jason Statham.

      • Jensen ackles is brought up to much like nathan fillion, he is fine where he is.

      • I stand corrected lol I totally overlooked Statham, he IS rocket racooon lol

    • Jenson Ackles for Iron Fist. Star Lord would not be half bad either.

As far as Rocket Racoon, he needs to sound intimidating, Jason Statham or Michael Rooker.

      • or what about Stalone or scharzenager, or Norris, JK

        • Rocket Raccoon has got to have a British accent and his voice has got to be done by Jason Statham.
          That is all ;)

      • Sorry, not feeling Ackles for the MA and sometimes overly philosophical bad-ass Iron Fist. I don’t think the guy even has MA training which I would think is very important to the role.

Instead of being selfish and hoarding all of the good actors, we need to let Ackles go to the “Dark” side and let DC have him to play Batman.

      • Michael Rooker All the way, HE would be great for that character

  3. I am curious about all this as well, however, I have no specific opinion regarding actor, as despite the fact I know that armor will look awesome on the big screen, I know little about the character. Whereas I am curious if they will have any eastereggs relating to the original gaurdians, like hollywood(future wonderman, appearantly along with being an earth actor he becomes a galatic one, he is also imortal) or astrovik. for that matter I wonder if we will have wonderman show up to fight the avengers(after appearing to show up to help them), now that would be interesting, but we need Baron Zemo for that well for that matter it would be cool to see him in general, hope he appears in cap 2

    • and of course I am more curious about Antman casting XD

      • ok, sorry to do a third post in a row, but I forgot to ask, Rob Keyes, are you considering doing an ‘Armors we would love to see in iron man 3′ list? that would be extremely cool, as there are a lot of armors, and quite a few are memborable, a good place to start looking around is a website called ‘The Iron Man armory’, they are good for anything pre 2005ish, and that is quite a bit. And it would be awesome to see the Silver Centurion armor or the modular armor(what the hulk buster attaches too. it is also the armor used in the ’90s iron man cartoon)

  4. Edgerton would be my first choice but Pace isn’t a bad second! Either one would be great for Ant-Man too. :)

    • Like

      • I would kinda like edgerton for antman myself

  5. as a huge fan of the comic, and of Lee Pace’s, I’d say none of them are right for Peter Quill. I wish we knew why Nathon Fillion wasn’t even in the running, he is PERFECT for Star-Lord.

    • Fillion has said before he is happy for what castle has done for him and loves the show and is going to stay with it.

    • No no no. Nathan Fillion is PERFECT for the John Stewart Green Lantern!!!

Actually, I stand corrected. He is PERFECT for Wonder Woman!!!!

  6. Still holding out for edgerton as danny rand. I want a rush hour-style buddy action comedy for heroes for hire.

  7. IMO its a mistake of Marvel not to include one of the original guardians in there. Just including an original guardians likely would mean more toy and book possibilities if they are going to look at it as a way to get more money.

Personally im just a big fan and it isnt guardians of the galaxy without at least vance astro (major victory) or starhawk. My guess though is Nikki, Charlie-27, or Yondu might fit better in the kind of style they seem to be heading towards.

Lets hope James Gunn is as big a comic fan as he says he is

    • What about hollywood? or perhaps say his name in this time period, Wonderman,

  8. Huston

  9. It’s a shame this is being made before Black Panther. /facepalm

    • Yeah…:-/

    • i agree Black Panther should of been made before GOTG

      • Yeah… still hopeful for an appearance in Avengers 2 though.
Whedon did say he’d be introducing some new heroes in the sequel.

        • but i dont want him to have hes own solo movie

    • I assume a major reason this is being made is to set up Thanos for Avengers 2. But I might be wrong.

  10. Still think the pivotal lead role of Star-Lord needs to be played by a more high profile actor. Having that will lend credibility and interest to those who don’t know anything about the franchise.

  11. I’m a huge fan of Guardians and Nova. Only 2 of the actors listed can somewhat fit Peter Quill. The best pick for Pete is Nikolaj Coster-Waldau. That said, Edgerton and Pace are the only two I can see play Pete from that list. I deff can’t see fish lips play Pete or anyone else in this movie. Huston would be good for Bug. Jim Sturgess could maybe MAYBE be an alright Nova but Garrett Hedlund would be the better pick for Nova.
