Riddler Jim Carrey Marvel Interested in Jim Carrey & Adam Sandler For Guardians of the Galaxy

It’s only January, but we have a contender for what may be the most unexpected headline of the year, featuring “Marvel” and “Adam Sandler” together in the same sentence.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier begins filming April 1st, and next up on the Marvel Studios’ docket is the big sci-fi project, Guardians of the Galaxy, which has yet to cast a single actor. The casting process began less than two months ago and since that time, over a dozen names have been reported to have read or signed test deals with the studio for the role of Peter Quill AKA Star-Lord (the leader of the Guardians). Today we can add three more names to that list of candidates, in addition to two high-profile comedy actors for an unspecified role.

Latino-Review and their trusted sources reveal that Wes Bentley (The Hunger Games), Chris Lowell (The Practice), and Cam Gigandet (Twilight) are now in the running for the Star-Lord gig as well, with Bentley entering the race with a Marvel film already on his resume, having played Blackheart in Ghost Rider.

The three join a list of reported and rumored talent which includes Joel Edgerton, Jack Huston, Jim Sturgess, Lee Pace, Eddie Redmayne, Garrett Hedlund, James Marsden, Sullivan Stapleton, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Zachary Levi, Michael Rosenbaum and John Krasinski, many of whom have seemingly been ruled out since. With the list still growing, writer/director James Gunn, Marvel pres Kevin Feige and the other decision makers involved are clearly facing a tough challenge in deciding who to have lead their riskiest project to date.

What’s really eye-catching is the other part of LR’s scoop which indicates that Marvel Studios has inquired as to the availability of both Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. Crazy? Perhaps not. While both actors come from a comedy background, it’s likely that Marvel is simply looking for some high-profile names in building the supporting cast around whomever they choose to play Peter Quill. And we expect that both are being considered for a key voice role in the film. We already know two CG characters in Groot (second from left in image below) and Rocket Raccoon (second from the right) and it’s a no-brainer to put “name” actors in both roles to help sell the feature.

Carrey of course played Riddler in Batman Forever and will be in theaters later this year for a key role as Colonel Stars and Stripes in Kick-Ass 2. If you could choose, who of the two would voice Rocket? What live-action characters could they play?

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Ant-Man on November 6, 2015.

  1. i don’t know if anyone has said this i didn’t see it in the comments, but nobody has said for sure that marvel only wants them for voice work. looking at groot, i could see carey playing that role, maybe as a cgi. ala` mark ruffalo’s hulk.

  2. The longer the casting process seems to go on, the worst the actors seem to get that they are looking at. Cam Gigandet, Adam Sandler, Jim Carey, Michael Rooker, Wes Bentley… It seems like they actually want this risky venture to fail. Maybe they should stop trying to cast Star Lord and voice actors for Rocket Racoon and just find a new director instead.

  3. Sandler could be amazing as Rocket Raccon!

  4. Rocket Raccoon has English accent so people being suggested should be british. Infact Jason Statham wouldn’t be a bad choice I couldnt seeing himdo it

    • If I am not mistaken, Rocket Raccoon only had a British accent in his cartoon depictions where he is voiced by Greg Ellis and no where in the comics is it suggested that he speaks with any kind of accent.

  5. Every new thing I read about this flick provides further indication it will be terrible… horrifically and devastatingly terrible. There are currently 111 comments to this particular story about the rumored Carrey and Sandler casting – I bet that will be the total number of people who see this movie in the theater. This whole thing was an incredibly bad idea, from the start.

  6. @ Matt: that’s what they said about Star Wars at the beginning!

    • @ Sakib: A long time ago, in a studio (not so) far, far away. Right? lol

  7. PLEASE SOMEONE STOP THEM! I hope to God this doesn’t tie into the Avengers 2 in ANY WAY like I’ve read recently. There’s a raccoon with a gun for God’s sake!!! I’m sure comic geeks will be ecstatic but the rest of the world, ya know main stream America responsible for the majority of ticket sells, are going to see a raccoon with a gun and laugh out of the theater. Please someone make them aware of that! If they want to throw money away, let them but don’t drag the Avengers down with them.

    • No did any of that, when they made Frank an agent in MIB 2.

    • No one* did any of that, when they made Frank an agent in MIB 2.

  8. I’m not the biggest sander fan I thinki like Carey more when he’s a serious actor I don’t think I’m all for these two guys joing gaurdians I just don’t think they’re voices sound serious enough or cool enough to make the cartoony characters cool or serious in any way. I think this film can be terrific I think it can be like the J.J Abrams star trek of the marvel universe the only issue that concerns me is whether or not Marvel Studios and James Gunn can make the somewhat out there and cartoony characters serious by cartoony I really mean Rocket Racoon I look at this guy and I just can’t find a way to make the audience take him seriously but then again im not a movie maker at least not like the studio is. And again nobodyis really clear if these two comedians are wanted to actually play the characters in mo-cap suits or just voice them I could probably see Carey a Groot and Sandler I can even see as Racoon but the only thing that iwouldhate about Sandler playing any character is that really annoying voice that he does in soooo and way to many of newest movies like that’s my boy the voice that sounds like two cats whinnning to each other in the middle of the night keeping you up, that’s what I hate or dislike about I’m really, if he is to play Rocket Racoon I want him to use the voiceheusedin Big Daddy in other words his regular voice or the voice he used in chuck and Larry. I hear a lot of people want Jason Stratham to voice Racoon buti am to for that in any way shape or form I don’t picture that working honestly if I could choose I’d say Ray Liotta from Goodfellas thats what I always imagined the Racoon sounding like, for Groot if I could have whatever I wanted in the world I’d probably say Morgan Freeman.
