Meet The Guardians of the Galaxy Meet The Guardians of the Galaxy With These Video Introductions

must of any actor working for director James Gunn is the ability to do both drama and comedy, hence the casting of Chris Pratt (Parks and Recreation) as the protagonist in Guardians of the Galaxy and the selection of Bradley Cooper as the voice of the film’s “heart” in Rocket Raccoon. In reality, all of the stars of Guardans of the Galaxy bring different things to the table which makes its roster as interesting and ‘out there’ as the property itself.

Vin Diesel, the most popular man in the world by social media standards, is voicing the team’s largest character and stole hearts with his Iron Giant voice work early on in his career. Zoe Saldana is the queen of sci-fi film franchises and like Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper, can hit any mark on the acting spectrum. Dave Bautista, a long-time pro wrestler is a newcomer to the film acting game but a proven physical force. And last but not least, is Chris Pratt who currently tops a list of most likable stars in the world and is enjoying a career explosion with recent hit The LEGO Movie and upcoming lead role in Jurassic World.

For two years we’ve told you about the five main characters featured in the Guardians of the Galaxy comics, who they were, and what they’re becoming on screen. We’ve shared countless interviews from writer and director James Gunn and Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige about what the Guardians mean to them and why they are deserving of a big budget film adaptation.

The first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy released this week (watch our analysis video and check out the HD photos) and while it focused on its leader in Peter Quill aka Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) it smartly found a way to introduce and offer background on its entire roster, without even having them speak a word. Now, let’s let the stars playing these characters briefly tell you about them (along with a few quotes by James Gunn about them told to Total Film).

Chris Pratt is Peter Quill aka Star-Lord

Not a superhero, but cunning and charming

Zoe Saldana is Gamora

A deadly assassin with a heart of gold

“Zoe is about as un-intimidating as you can imagine! She gets in the zone the moment that cameras start filming – but before that she’s basically her loud, brash, completely lovable and goofball self. She got it easy with the makeup – it only took about four hours to put on, whereas it took Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan six hours or more. Zoe and Karen are the two most hardass characters in the movie – they’re our Clint Eastwoods. It should take more than a few people by surprise. “

Dave Bautista is Drax the Destroyer

Lives solely for revenge

Vin Diesel is the voice of Groot

A very strange character

“I love Groot so much I get teary eyed when I think of him sometimes. Essentially, all the Guardians start out the movie as bastards – except Groot. He’s an innocent. He’s a hundred percent deadly and a hundred percent sweet. He’s caught up in Rocket’s life, really. The shot of Groot in the trailer took a few weeks to create, but the development of his look and how he moves took the better part of a year.”

Bradley Cooper is the voice of Rocket Raccoon

Anger issues and the heart of the film

“We’ve recorded most of Bradley’s dialogue already. I suppose you would expect me to tell you he’s fantastic and his characterisation of Rocket will blow your mind – so don’t believe me and just wait to see (or hear) it for yourself. In all truth, we hired Bradley because he’s able to do both comedy and drama – it’s the thing I look for most in the actors on all my films – and to truly sell Rocket – for you to believe a Raccoon can talk (and blow up and shoot tons of stuff) we need a well-rounded actor.”

The Rocket Raccoon video is an important one since it’s the first time we get to hear Bradley Cooper’s voice for the character, which may be a downer for fans who were hoping for a Cockney accent of the character – as featured in some other iterations of him. Still no sample of Vin Diesel voicing Groot however, and uttering his one and only line “I Am Groot.”

According to Diesel, before he was officially cast, he’s also doing motion capture work for Groot but by the time he joined principal photography was complete and most of the visual effects were underway so we’re not sure if he’s doing any physical work for the character.

  1. jesus, the look in Gamora’s eyes and attitude reminds me of my ex

  2. You say Bautista’s a film acting newcomer but he’s dabbled before in The Man With The Iron Fists and played a Kryptonian in an episode of Smallville.

At least he’s done better than other pro wrestlers (Triple H was horrendous in Blade Trinity and that dumb comedy on the school bus, John Cena was horrible in The Marine and 12 Rounds, amongst many others, the only decent ones were Kane in See No Evil and Big Show in Jingle All The Way and The Waterboy).

    • In his own words, Bautista described himself as a newbie on set. He said that at Comic-Con too. For him it’s all new and this is a learning experience so he’s taking it all in. Yes he had bit parts before, but wasn’t a main character or had very little dialogue.

Riddick, Scorpion King 3, Man With The Iron Fists, etc.

      • Dave Bautista would be perfect to play Yul Brenners character in WEST WORLD movie.

    • And of course, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson…

    • What about The Rock?

  3. Fantastic videos… they kept them coming at a very close range that almost gave me a heart attack

but Rob, you forgot the poster… the final piece of the puzzle that literally blow me away after the barrage of videos. That poster is simple yet fabulous… I’m left speechless with my heart stopped hahaha

It’s a good year for a Marvel fan! THANK YOU Marvel (their answer will be on the poster ;D)

    • Oh I didn’t forget – working on it separately :)

      • I love the caption on the poster haha.. classic.

      • keep up the awesome work rob!

  4. test……

screenrant isn’t letting me comment on stuff…

    • it worked!! huzzah!

  5. only one line of dialogue from rocket and i can’t get this stupid grin off my face, i can’t wait till august.

  6. looking at Zoe as Gamora in that lineup scene reminds me of Rihanna

  7. I like more Zoe´s looks from Avatar :)
Groot? Im doubtful about that one.

But most important, if the Star Lord happens to be extra extra “clowny”, then it will fail.

    • Chris Pratt being a jokester will NOT cause the movie to fail.

  8. Here’s to hoping for a Vance Astro easter egg. A cameo would be too much and might feel a little forced in but I would love one! I read GoTG back in the 90s. Jim Valentino had a good run writing/drawing it. Those were the days…

    • Ya I have a feeling the original team will pop in sequels. Yondu’s in this and Vance was part of the new team for a while.

  9. This movie can’t come soon enough.

  10. I’m happy for Bautista, he seems to be genuinely thankful that he got the part.

    • Well, he’s a 45 year old with kids and grandchildren and came from poverty to where he is right now so I imagine he would be, especially being in a movie the grandchildren can enjoy him in.

    • He’s been incredibly humble in his interviews. Very refreshing and overall makes me root for the Guy

  11. Hmmmm Rocket sounds like …… Bradley Cooper. Not sure what I think of him yet, need to see more before I make full judgement. I want to hear Drax, Gamora and Groot!!

  12. That green chick is hot as hell. I think I’ve got a new fetish, guys… This can’t be healthy – now i’ve got about a fifty.

    • And then you grow up to become captain of the Starship Enterprise. Right? I hope so.

But no, totally agree with you.

      • She just needs, what is it? Oh yes, eyebrows.

  13. Captin Kirk says, “That’s cute.”

  14. Man this could be the most overrated film that hasnt come out yet!!!!!
Marvel movies are SOFT!!!! Thor was soft, ironman expect 1 was soft…..(actually Ironman 2 and 3 could be the worst superhero movies ive seen so far) So i wonder how this movie will do, cuz most ppl that dont read comics dont even know who these turds are……..get ready for a letdown………

    • Nah, Man of Steel was such a forced, wooden, soulless piece of crap that I was far more disappointed in it than any other recent comic book movie of the past few years. Even worse than The Dark Knight Rises, which was a bummer considering how awesome The Dark Knight was.

    • Letdowns? Oh, you mean like Green Lantern. Yeah, it’ll be nothing like that, I’m sure.

      • How’d you get to green lantern?
this may well be nothing like the letdown that GL was, but personally i’m worried that it’ll be a ‘star wars prequels’ level of letdown (as i getting an episode 2 vibe from some of it)

i do agree that this is currently the most overrated film that hasnt come out yet

i dont mean that its going to be bad, marvel always hits the ‘ok-good’ level, but given the response to the stuff that has come out over the last few days it does seem that a lot of people have gone ‘new marvel movie, this is going to be awesome! its gonna be the bestest most epic comic book movie ever!’
which it wont it’ll be good cutesy fun with maybe a cool action sequence thrown in and some characters looking for orbs/stones

i know that bestest is not a word

        • I guess it depends on the person.

I saw the trailer and was blown away after already being excited for it anyway.

If watching the trailer doesn’t do it for you then it might be best to just avoid the movie when it releases. That’s how I do things anyway, pay for stuff I like the look of, avoid stuff I think looks like crap.

          • I did not say that it looks crap – simply that it doesnt look as good as the reaction its getting, thats all

the trailer was largely hit and miss for me, some stuff was cool and i wanted to see more, other stuff did not look good at all to me
but if i am not on board by the time the movie comes out i wont go see it,
after last year marvel has to do more than just release any ol film to get me to go see it in cinemas

            • Personally,I think this movie looks like trash and will avoid it like the plague, but that’s just me.

It seems that most people that are interested in this movie are looking for “a good time at the theater” and not necessarily a good movie. And this is my problem with Marvel movies now.The are more about having a good time and not about watching a good movie.

I’m not telling anyone what they should or shouldn’t like, but this movies isn’t for me and they most certainly will not be getting my money.

    • 6 million Youtube views (and counting) for the trailer says otherwise. People are interested, and more will be come August.

      • not to mention the significant increase in downloads for “Hooked on a Feeling”

    • Are you serious? Also, learn how to type and spell properly.

  15. Not sold on Rockets voice. I’ll still watch the movie.

  16. I am kind of curious why, if they are using this version of the team, there is no Adam Warlock. Especially with Thanos as the man behind the villains. He really would be great to have at least show up at the end or in the post credits scene.

    • I’m also disappointed they didn’t include Quasar in some incarnation, male or female. This would have been Marvel’s chance to upstage DC and do “Green Lantern” correctly (since they have the same power set)

Guess they decided 5 was the number and this is the group they chose. It does make sense considering the ties the characters have to the larger MCU (Gamora is tied to Thanos, Drax is tied to Ronin now, you have to have the leader and then you cannot do this w/o Groot or RR).

We ca only hope Quasar and Adam Warlock will join later (especially since we don’t have the Silver Surfer and Warlock can kind of sub for him)

    • I could be wrong, but Adam Warlock is the character that goes into some sort of cuccoon at one point correct? If you watch the post credits scene on Thor TDW with the collector, behind Volstag and Siff is a big item that looks very much like a cuccoon.

Might just be an easter egg, or something else completely, but I would imagine that they are hinting at his existence in the MCU :)

      • Yep, I believe it is Adam Warlock in that cocoon. Looks like they’re going all out in regards to the Marvel mythology with this movie.

    • Warlock is asleep in his cocoon on The Collector’s ship. See the button scene of Thor The Dark World

  17. Still not digging the look of Drax or having RR be a small human with a raccoon’s head.

Will it be enough to stop me from seeing it? Probably not since I do like irreverent anti-hero types.

  18. Anybody else getting two images in tye videos? Like its trying to show in 3d or something?

  19. Not a fan of Bradley Cooper’s voice for RR.

    • Yeah, it’s a bit too smooth and frat-boyish. I would have expected him to sound gruffier.

  20. Zoe Saldana has made quite a leap from playing a simplistic blue alien to the much more complex green alien. I think she’ll have to hone her acting skills a bit more though before she’s ready for the red alien roll. I mean we’re talking Oscar caliber performance there. Of course once you’ve done those primary colors where do you go from there?

    • Didn’t she just get the green alien job on GotG, because she was roommates with the green alien on Star Trek? Friggin’ cronyism!

    • Secondary colors. Doy.

On another note I laughed. Laughed real good.

      • Well secondary colors would be a step down. She could play a white alien…er…I guess that might not work. Maybe gold or silver.

  21. “I did not say that it looks crap – simply that it doesnt look as good as the reaction its getting, thats all”

Seeing this kind of thing a lot lately about movies. Are you INSANE? If everyone loves something, but you don’t like it as much as they do, that doesn’t mean it’s not good enough to justify that reaction. It means You, Personally, don’t like it.

It’s not “Everyone isn’t wrong.” The overwhelming response should just tell you that your taste is different.

    • *edit*
      It’s not “Everyone is wrong,”

    • Yes but my viewpoint is always the right one. So that makes everyone else wrong and they will die and burn in hell.

    • I accept that there is a difference in taste
I am not trying to say that ‘everyone is wrong’ as people are entitled to have different opinions
I am allowed to say that I don’t think its as good as others think in the same way that those who really liked the trailer are allowed to say how great they think it is

I personally don’t think it is entirely deserving of the level of praise (which seemed almost gravity-esque) it’s been getting as there are bits that don’t look overly impressive to me

There are bits I liked in the trailer thought it looked fine
This doesn’t mean I think its crap nor do think it looked AWESOME just think it looks fine/ok/good – it’s not on my ‘must see in cinemas’ list yet
I do wonder why opinions regarding stuff have to be completely love it or hate it with little in the middle

  22. I’m not just saying this because I’ve always been skeptical of the way Marvel handles their properties but this might just be the most impressive marketing barrage I have ever seen. I know that it’s sort of an obscure comic but still. Marvel are just kicking ass all over. Everything they put out is just amazing and really sells the movie. If this movie tanks money-wise, it is not their fault. And I doubt it will. Although I think that The Winter Soldier is going to be better quality-wise, I’m more excited to see this more than any other superhero movie this year.

  23. Okay, so … there’s a walking, talking raccoon, a green-skinned woman, a walking tree guy, and two normal looking guys. This is Marvel’s concept of the galaxy’s best offerings? Gosh, what an underwhelming imagination.

    • The characters are great, with lots of personality and interesting backstories.

When I started reading comics in the late ’80s, my uncle hooked me up with a bunch of Tales to Astonish and others from the ’70s. That’s when I first started really getting into Groot and Rocket and Star Lord. When they were put into a team together in ’08 it was like having a wish come true.

  24. I have some friends who aren’t that into the comic book scene. They saw the trailer at my house, turned to me and said “what in the fark.” So I said, “I’m not even going to explain it. Take these home to read, and come back tomorrow…” handing them all 4 volumes of the Annihilation series including The Annihilators. I hope they enjoy the books. They have brains so it seems likely.

  25. I love it whenever people get together and share ideas.
Great website, continue the good work!
