Guardians of the Galaxy: James Gunn Finally Confirms Vin Diesel’s Role

Vin Diesel is Groot Official Guardians of the Galaxy Guardians of the Galaxy: James Gunn Finally Confirms Vin Diesels Role

For months now, Vin Diesel has talked up his excitement, research and training for the role of Groot in Marvel’s upcoming space epic Guardians of the Galaxy. Diesel is not only voicing the largest of the Guardians team, a walking, sentient tree who speaks only in the words “I am Groot!” but he’s doing some of the motion capture as well.

Despite the frequency of news relating to him having the part, even co-stars talking about his talents, it was never officially official. Much like Marvel announcing the casting of Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Elizabeth Olsen in The Avengers: Age of Ultron, Diesel being officially added to the roster of stars in Guardians of the Galaxy comes as absolutely no surprise.

We had heard from Marvel Studios president of production Kevin Feige that official announcements regarding new cast members in The Avengers 2, Ant-Man and Guardians of the Galaxy would be coming by the end of the year and that promise was held. In addition to Taylor-Johnson and Olsen joining Age of Ultron as Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, respectively, funnyman Paul Rudd was officially cast this week as Ant-Man in Edgar Wright’s long-in-development Marvel movie. Joining them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be Vin Diesel as the alien known as Groot.

Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn took to Diesel’s favorite social media platform, Facebook, to confirm the news with the photo up top earlier today (just before Marvel posted it on their official site), where Diesel has his arm around a bust of the character he’s playing. Gunn notes that there have been a few tweaks to the Groot design throughout the process and what’s shown above is what the character will look like in the film.

“Vin Diesel is a super awesome dude. I can’t tell you how much I like this guy. “

While responding to Facebook comments, Gunn elaborated and clarified a few things – namely, that despite all the talk and reports of Diesel’s involvement – mostly from the star himself – he was never actually signed for the part, just interested and in talks. Now he’s on board and has already begun his recording sessions.

“He was never announced. He said he wanted to do it and we said we were talking to him. Everything else was people guessing and thinking they knew what was going to happen.”

“Also I hope this puts to rest all the silly Thanos-Vin stuff which people just seemed to make up out of nothing.”

Note the second part where he addresses the rumors that Marvel and Gunn may have been planning a bait-and-switch, making fans think Diesel’s only coming in for Groot, but actually playing (or also playing) the big bad villain known as Thanos – the alien dude at the end of The Avengers who smiles at the idea of “death.” Still, we know Vin Diesel initially met with Marvel to talk about another, much larger role coming in 2016-17 and that’s still on the table. It’s a part that Diesel hints will “merge brands” and one of our more obvious theories is that he could be leading a movie based on another team of powered heroes called The Inhumans.

So, who’s playing Thanos?

Guardians of the Galaxy is directed by James Gunn off of his script co-written by Nicole Perlman. Diesel joins a cast led by Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Benicio del Toro, John C. Reilly, Bradley Cooper and Glenn Close.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers: Age of Ultron on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on July 31, 2015, and unannounced films for May 6 2016, July 8 2016 and May 5 2017.

  1. At last, those ridiculous “Vin as Thanos” rumours are dead. Hooray for common sense!

I assume Damon Poitier will resume his role as Thanos for close ups and CGI for wide shots since the character’s as big as Hulk.

    • YES ! indeed bring back Poitier to play Thanos

    • You got that right I was praying Vin Doesn’t Play Thanos.

  2. That’s cool, we have known this for quite some time. Wasn’t there a picture of vin in stilts? Duh

    • I know I saw a video of him walking around set on stilts. That looked fun.

  3. #VINforBLACKBOLT !!!

    • I am not sure I picture him as Black Bolt. Probably not Gorgon either…maybe Karnak??

  4. Groot looks awesome. So stoked for this movie!

  5. Why were Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch confirmed way before Groot?

    • They might have signed before Vin.

  6. Like we didn’t see that one coming. With all those videos of him walking around on stilts lol!

  7. Dazz, minor correction. It’s Damion Poitier. Not a grammar nazi, but people often misspell my first and last name. Just want to point Pierre in the right direction.

    • Oops, thanks for the correction. Annoyed me when people couldn’t pronounce or spell my last name correctly too (it’s shared by a few people in Hollywood, not gonna say what).

      • Pitt? Cruise. Freeman???

  8. I am Groot.

    • I AM GROOT!!!!

    • Welllllll, actually Vin Diesel is Groot :)

  9. Dazz, minor correction. It’s Damion Poitier. Not a grammar nazi, but people often misspell my first and last name. Just want to point people in the right direction.

  10. Curse you Swype autocorrect.
    *people in the right direction.

  11. Strange how much that mask looks like Vin Diesel.

I have tried, but this movie has not peaked my interest. I’m not sure anyone outside of comic book fans even KNOW about it. I feel this is going to be Marvel’s first flop.

    • Take that uncertainty about people outside of comic book fans knowing what Guardians is and include most comic book movies and TV shows of the last 15 years that aren’t about Batman, Superman, Spiderman and The Hulk.

You know where I’m going with this, right? That people will know once marketing kicks in and the movie releases.

      • I hear what you’re saying, man, and I REALLY hope I am wrong and that this is a kick butt movie. However, I grew up reading comic books and I never heard of GoTG until I heard they were making this movie. A lot of people had at least HEARD of Captain America, Iron Man and Thor even though they didn’t know the characters as well as Spidey, Superman and Batman. But a movie with a talking tree and raccoon? Marvel REALLY needs to get the advertising train going on this NOW because a LOT of people are going to be “WTF?!?”

        • Well I can say that people around me weren’t really familiar with Marvel’s B- and C-list characters either – I hadn’t heard of Iron Man before the movie came out, but I went to watch because it looked good. Bearing in mind that most of the moviegoing public aren’t comicbook readers anyway, so marketing matters much more than the characters/story being popular within the fandom.

Talking trees and raccoons will be a little weird, but I think they can offset it with the larger premise and the action – if it looks cool, people will come. It may not be a huge smash but it doesn’t have to be. Or hey, put it this way – I think this is definitely an easier sell than Ant-Man.

        • To be fair, all you have so far is words, casting decisions and a few pictures to go with. Maybe that GIF if you saw it.

They’re not trying to wow you just yet.

        • You’re right and I think that’s part of the appeal for Marvel – doing something ‘different’. The Guardians were nowhere to be found until Dan Abnett & Andy Lanning Annihilation brought back the space epics in 2006 – that led to Annihilation: Conquest which led to the Guardians relaunch. Fun fact – Guardians sells more books RIGHT NOW than Iron Man did when it was in production.

But all this stuff about recognizable characters means little at the box office – it’s the marketing, word of mouth and stars that sell movies. That’s why original properties like Inception and Avatar made big bank, right?

    • I’m not a comic book fan so I never read ANY comic for GotG…
      But even I know about them… 😀

At least if you have watched the animated (Avengers EMH or Ultimate Spider-man), or play video games (Marvel vs Capcom), you’ll know some of the characters…

    • I could see that.

      • I would rather he was Sasquatch in an Alpha Flight movie.

      • Him and Vin Diesel are the only two that have the perfect voice…

  13. Theatricality and deception are powerful agents to the uninitiated… but we are initiated, aren’t we Rob? Members of the League of Screenrant!

    • lol, true! They still haven’t announced anyone as Thanos so… the door’s open.

      • Do they need to?

It’d be like saying “well, no one announced Hawkeye yet”, despite him already appearing in costume.

I can’t see them replacing Thanos with a name actor unless they absolutely have to (like if Poitier is somehow unavailable or he falls out with Whedon).

  14. This might be the best cast comic book film ever… all of the actors chosen will fit the guardians well. I mean I would’ve switched Bautista for Jason Momoa but.. I’m more excited for this than anything else coming out

    • They did originally approach Jason Momoa but he wanted too much money or something.

      • Even before they started casting, I was saying that Bautista would be the best choice for Drax. I’m glad they finally landed him.

  15. Kinda off topic, but I had an idea for an Incredible Hulk Marvel One Shot Prequel, in the original opening for The Incredible Hulk you see his failed suicide attempt. So after that the Hulk makes his way back down to Canada and turns back into Bruce Banner, he is found by two Canadian hunters, he stays with them awhile until one day when the three of them track a wounded deer back to a cave and they all go inside, one hunter gets spooked and fires his gun which causes a cave in and one of the hunters is gravely injured. Days go by with their supplies dwindling the other hunter kills and cannibalizes the wounded hunter, who then transforms into the Wendigo and attacks Bruce who then transforms into the Hulk, they battle breaking out of the cave, eventually the Hulk kills the Wendigo and leaves, Bruce then later finds a job on a cargo ship that is heading down to Brazil.

    • *yawns*

      • HURAWL!?!?!?

        • like what I did there?

        • HEY!

          • Now that Mindbender’s done it, do you finally see how completely unfunny your gimmick is now?

            • Lmao um, wtf did i just saw…?

  16. I, am Groot. I AM groot. I. Am. Groot!

    • i am groot. i AM groot…I AM GROOT!

  17. I’m really excited to see this. Thanks for the Hat-Tip Rob! Most anticipated film of 2014 (besides CA: TWS, of course)

  18. They can cast as Thanos the same guy who played Thanos in the post credit scene of Avengers…
They told him they could call him again in the future.

    • Hey, is anyone familiar with that famous “Bigfoot video”, the one where it’s walking away and turns slightly to face the camera?

We should hire Bigfoot to play Thanos, because it did the exact same thing, just as well as the guy “playing” Thanos in the Avengers end credit scene. Who’s with me?

  19. i have a slightly related question

given that the Inhumans is shaping up to be included in phase 3, could someone give me an idea of how that film would go plotwise?
who are their villian(s)? will there be much time on earth?

i ask as i am a little unfamiliar with the characters on their own (only time i have seen any of the Inhumans is in crossover stories and games, and while they are cool characters

Also what if Vin Diesels’ role that will ‘merge brands’ is someone like the Watcher?

    • I really don’t know what direction they’d take it other than introducing another Infinity Stone. I’d expect it could serve as a quasi-sequel to Guardians and perhaps the “merge” is them bring the bridge between The Avengers and the Guardians.

  20. Thor 3 may 2016. Captain America 3 July 2016. Avengers 3 2017. And thanos will probably appear in Thor 3 as an introduction then brought as the main villian in avengers 3

    • I think the other phase 3 movies are Black Panther and Doctor Strange.

      • i hope…i keep getting the feeling BP gets pushed back or i recall reading Inhumans before BP

  21. They should do a 2 part infinite gauntlet movie after avengers 3 coz thanos is too big of a villain to be taken down in one movie. Avengers 3 could focus on the masters of evil

    • Or The Avengers: Age of Ultron. Ultron did form the 2nd Masters of Evil team in ‘Avengers #54 (vol. 1, Jul. 1968)’. The members was Ulysses Klaw, Bruno Horgan/Melter, Chen-Lu/Radioactive Man and David Cannon/Whirlwind.

      • Oh, forgot. And Dane Whitman/Black Knight.

  22. “Dominic Torretto and his gang of drivers must join forces with the Mighty Avengers to take down the their must powerful foe yet: Thanos” Hollywood make it happen!

  23. did they use Vin’s head for that model cause it looks like him ha

    • Universal currently owns the rights to Namor

  24. You all can notice that Groot’s jaw’s, chin’s, and eyes’ shape is likened with Vin Diesel.

  25. Funny, if they had REALLY felt he was an awesome dude, he should have been offered the role of Drax (which he was absolutely perfect for it both look and abilities) instead of the muscle bound Bautista.

  26. A big baddie that ‘merges brands’ – Apocalypse fits that description and could unite the Avengers and X-Men brands.

  27. easiest money Vin ever made. I am Groot. indeed
