Benicio Del Toro Guardians of the Galaxy Cast Benicio Del Toro Joins Guardians Of The Galaxy With Multi Picture Deal

If the lovable combination of Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and Zoe Saldana didn’t have Marvel movie fans at least curious about Guardians of the Galaxy, the onslaught of high profile casting news in the last week alone will do the trick.

John C. Reilly is reportedly joining Guardians of the Galaxy in a role similar to that of Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson who’s set to return from the dead this fall on ABC in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.. Joining him from the stars above will be Glenn Close who’s taking on a leadership position among the Nova Corps space police. Last but not least, Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan has signed to play the main villain of the film. All three cast additions were reported in the last few days alone and we can now add Benicio Del Toro to the mix.

Deadline has the latest Marvel casting scoop about Marvel Studios and writer-director James Gunn landing the major signing. There are no specifics on the role just yet outside of the fact that it’s a multipicture deal (with options) for a character who will also be involved in future Marvel films. The news is surprising considering Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams were unable to sign Del Toro as the villain of Star Trek Into Darkness reportedly due to a disagreement on the financials, yet Marvel – infamously known for being extremely tight and strict with their contracts – may have just landed him for multiple films.

Ronan The Accuser Marvel Benicio Del Toro Joins Guardians Of The Galaxy With Multi Picture Deal

Del Toro is practically typecast into villainous figures but this could be a chance for him to play an important spacefaring hero. Or not. We have no information whatsoever on his character outside of his potential long-term role in the franchise. Could he play the rumored Ronan the Accuser? Or will he undergo another major transformation (see: Wolfman) and become Thanos, the big bad villain behind-the-scenes who will be around through Phases Two and Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Thanos could be entirely animated and whoever plays him could be doing just voice work not unlike the still-to-be-announced Groot/Rocket Raccoon actors.

Who is Benicio Del Toro playing and should he play a villain or a hero?

Iron Man 3 is currently in theaters, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and Doctor Strange sometime after that.

  1. Very glad that Marvel is taking some risks with this movie by going for the big names. They needed to. My friends weren’t interested in this movie at all until Close, Gillan and now del Toro.

I wouldn’t mind if the rumors about them also going after Rickman, Watanabe or Laurie were true either.

  2. This is awesome news. Del Toro has always been a favorite of mine. Him playing Thanos is good specualtion, but the “multi-picture” bit has me leaning towards Dr. Strange. He’d make an excellent Strange.

    • Same here, Del Toro favors Strange too

    • I gotta disagree. Unless they are changing the good Doc’s stature, he is more fit for a muscular character like Ronan or Thanos. Hugh Laurie would be prefect for Doc Strange.

  3. Now im getting really worried about this film, its getting bloated with starS…

  4. I think the most important question is who will voice Cosmo?!

    • Characters like Wal Russ and Cosmo are my only concerns for this film. I don’t know how tney make that believable in the established cinematic universe.

      • Ah, but that’s the trick, really. The established universe so far has been mostly on Earth, and the bits that haven’t have already set-up that there’s some amazingly strange concepts. The best part of Guardians is that it gets to exist in a part of the universe where everything we’ve seen so far doesn’t matter. It’s vastly different from the other super hero flicks, in that it’s completely and utterly sci-fi. People have to stop thinking in terms of The Avengers, and start thinking in terms of Star Wars, because it’s much closer to that.

        • @Vanos_Of_Manos, Put a +1 on that.

  5. Franky Four Fingers is going to be in GOTG? I can dig it.

    • I’d be shocked if Del Torro made a Dr Strange movie before Justice League Dark or Hellboy 3.

      • Wrong Del Toro. Though, I would love Guillermo Del Toro to direct Doctor Strange. If anyone could nail the supernatural quasi horror thing that movie will need, it would be him.

        • It’s my biggest hope that Pacific Rim goes huge and makes serious bank, if for no other reason than to finally get GDT the big breakout hit he needs. With a huge hit under his belt, studios will be much more willing to finance his more personal projects like Hellboy 3 and Mountains of Madness.

          • @ Vanos & Mr. Heck

I agree with both of you. Pacific Rim is going to be huge, probably the biggest movie of the summer, and Del Toro will have his super hit. That should really enable him to do many other projects.

  6. Im still hoping for a Jeff Goldblum to finally be announced to be voiceing Rocket Raccoon….

But in all honesty can this movie get any more bizarre John C Rilley, Glenn Close, Benico Del Toro, Batista,a talking tree and Raccoon

  7. John C. Reilly, Glenn Close, and Benicio Del Toro added to the cast. Hope they add Alan Rickman as well since he was rumored to be in negotiations for some part in the movie. I hope the rumors are true and either Jim Carrey or David Tennant is cast as Rocket Raccoon. I can also dream and say the epic voice of James Earl Jones for Groot. Won’t ever happen of course; he’s just gotten to old and don’t even no if he would be up for it.

Anyway, the cast for this movie is turning out great and unique.

  8. He’s Thanos.

  9. Now whyd ya have to go and dodat? Was tryin to make a point.

  10. I dont think he will be Thanos, they have backup for him already. He will be Accuser or whoever the main Villain in Avengers 2 going to be. Anyway the same character. If not villain, then i go for Adam Warlock or Nova?

      • I’m gonna go with epic until it’s proven otherwise. I think jumbled will be the term to describe X-Men: DOFP.

      • he will be the voice of Groot!!!

I dont think his voice is right for RR (everybody that knows more about RR says he needs a British accent so I will go with them since they know RR better than I)
but I really think he could make Groot sound BadA$$

  11. Its a nice ensemble of varied character actors and movie stars. Its looking promising.

  12. Pip the Troll maybe?

  13. Groot?

  14. Dr. Gonzo in Guardians, gotta love it.

  15. Adam Warlock is my initial guess. Anyway, I think he would make a good one. He’s need to get in shape of course, and go blonde. But in terms of capturing the on-the-edge-of-sanity voice of Warlock, I think he’d be perfect.

Dr. Strange is also an interesting idea … I could definitely see that. His physicality and coloring lend themselves more easily that direction.

  16. He should play Adam Worlock. That would make sense if he was using the infinity gem.

  17. Maybe he’ll be csat as Tony Stark, seeing as Robert Downey Jr wasn’t planning on continuing his role? Just a thought.
