Iron Man 3 has completed its world press tour yesterday evening with its London premiere and in attendance was writer and director James Gunn. Gunn is preparing to shoot Guardians of the Galaxy for Marvel Studios at London’s Shepperton Studios this summer and took time to chat with the media about biggest question mark for Phase Two of Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Gunn spoke on the topic of casting and finding the right voice for Rocket Raccoon, but he also addressed the Star Wars comparisons that arose last week when new concept art for Guardians of the Galaxy surfaced thanks to the Phase Two preview video included as bonus content on the 10-disc Avengers box set.

Gunn’s response to the similarities to Disney’s other massive space-faring franchise:

I do think we’re very, very different from Star Wars. Some of the concept art that came out is under my tutelage, and some of it is before my tutelage. The concept art that came out is only stuff that was on the big Marvel collected disc set, talking about phase two and it had some stuff from Guardians. Some of the art by Charlie Wen and the guys.”

Marvel Studios President of Production and producer Kevin Feige previous described Guardians as more of a “standalone film,” taking place in the same universe but far away from what moviegoers are used to seeing so far, although he did hint that fans may see a few familiar otherworldly faces. Whether that be the Chitauri and Thanos from The Avengers or beings we’ll meet in Thor: The Dark World, we don’t yet know. With Guardians of the Galaxy taking place “95%” in space, is it very different from the other films?

“In some ways yes, but in some ways no. In terms of a lot of stuff we’re very much like The Avengers, where it’s a very big, huge movie. It’s different because it’s cosmic, it’s in outer space, it’s very colorful  We have a whole history of science fiction behind us that we’re dealing with, and borrowing from, and also fighting with to create something unique. But at the same time there’s a lot of stuff it has in common with The Avengers.”

The most notable highlight comes from Gunn talking about the casting of Chris Pratt as Peter Quill aka Star-Lord. Gunn explains that after having “80 to 100 guys,” Pratt “blew his mind” with his portrayal of Quill and totally captured the role in a way similar to how Robert Downey Jr. became Tony Stark. He said Pratt would hold his own on screen with Downey Jr., and that’s a meeting that’s bound to happen down the road.

“That just means that all our movies are connected, we’re created in a way that we’re very connected to the movies that came before us, we’re even more connected to The Avengers 2, that comes after us, and so in that respect, what we would hope is that these characters would continue, and that at some point in time they’ll all meet up with different characters throughout the galaxy.”

Will Phase Two end with The Avengers and Guardians (Cosmic Avengers) meeting up on Earth? We do know that Thanos will have some role to play in both Guardians and The Avengers 2.

Guardians of the Galaxy is being rewritten and directed by James Gunn and begins shooting in London this summer. It will be released in 3D.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6, 2015, and Doctor Strange sometime after that.

  1. Yes as we figured, but my question is which of the phase 2 films connect most with gotg (even if just a post cred scene) or if the only they only meet in avengers 2 and part of av.2 of their meeting.

    • edit:

Yes as we figured, but my question is which of the phase 2 films connect most with gotg (even if just a post cred scene) or if they only meet in avengers 2, and part of av.2 is of their meeting.

    • Thor must in some way, simply due to its cosmic nature, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Cap 2 has a Guardians-related button scene because it comes out a few months before GotG.

  2. Man i hope this doesnt end up anything like Green Lantern, as far as content and box office returns go. which i dont think it will, critically anyways. You know there will be people that will compare it to Green Lantern, “What, another superhero film set in space, just like Green Lantern, and look how that turned out, skip!”. I hope those people give this movie a chance.

    • Green Lantern had so many flaws in its story and execution that it almost seems like a cruel joke.

This movie is going to be fantastic, I love that they cast Chris Pratt as Star-Lord, and know he’s gonna knock his performance outta the park.

    • Marvel knows what is at stake here with this property and what it means to the overall big picture of Phase 2. IMO so far they have been hitting homeruns with casting and the other tidbits they have been releasing to the direction they are going with this. This movie will not even come close to the disappointment that was Green Lantern.

      • People over at the Yahoo! website are really, really ticked off that John C. Reily was cast in the film.. the responses to his casting are unbelievably: “what!?”, “He sucks!” “stick to musicals!” “how can he be a superhero!?”.

They’re not very nice about his casting, but on here, screenrant.. they’re loving his casting, and so am I.

He’s been a video game character/hero/villian, so why not have him be the ultimate superhero in GotG?

  3. I am still seriously hoping for Beta Ray Bill to show up, both in Thor 2 and this as it would be a good link

  4. no worries here at all about any of phase 2 or 3..even Guardians for that matter. one word gives me all the confidence in the world…MARVEL.

  5. The more I read and see of this movie, the better I like it. I used to think it was a risky proposition, now I think it’s looking more like a sure bet.

    • So true man.
And to think, at one point I was completely against Marvel even considering making this movie!

  6. I’m not very familiar with gotg having recently picked up the title. With all the info that screenrant has provided I’m definitely looking forward to it when it releases.

  7. I wonder how they’ll portray Death, if she is included.. she is Thanos’ greatest love after all. Likely CG, but it would be cool to give her the mo-cap treatment with a good physical actress, a’la andy serkis as gollum.

and if Thanos’ minions are the major Guardians’ threat, who are the minions exactly? Which of the countless subjugated people’s will serve the mad titan? It won’t be chitauri again, not entirely.

    • Doug Jones doing Death’s mo-cap? He’s used to doing that kind of thing in Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth several characters per movie) plus he was the physical body of Silver Surfer so could be a good option if Death’s gonna have a weird sort of dance and rhythm to her movements.

      • Good choice.

    • I doubt we’ll get an actual embodiment of Death. That’s the sort of thing that even in the pages of the comics it’s like… “huh?”

Still though, I’m pretty sure I would die from nerdgasmic bliss if we somehow get an on screen adaptation of the Living Tribunal.

… you’ll re-call that Marvel tried negotiating the rights back from Fox to get Galactas and Surfer back. Unfortunately it never happened, so without Galactus I’m guessing we won’t get a meeting of the cosmic beings.

  8. This is going to be amazing if Gunn pulls it off… my most anticipated Marvel movie!

  9. Considering how beautiful the space world was in Thor, we might be in for a treat here..very much looking forward to it!!
P.S. You might want to change “blew hid mind” to “..his” :)

  10. Woooh only 1 week to go til the Iron Man 3 postcredits scene!! :D

  11. Avengers #2 & #3:
Need Goliath (Hank Pym; cool blue/yellow uniform), Wasp, Quicksilver, Scarlet Witch, Kang, Ultron, Whirlwind, Skrulls. Maybe Black Panther and Vision for #3 if all of the above criteria is done first, although BP might be better guest-starring in Captain America #3. Also need Mandarin in Avengers movie with his rings actively zapping away vs. Iron Man.

    • Dude, do you keep listing those things on every comic movie page just so you can have someone explain to you again and again that Fox has the rights to half of the things you want to see happen?

      • Actually, Marvel Studios is allowed to use the characters he mentioned.
In the case of the Skrulls, they’re just not allowed to use the Super Skrulls; and in the case of Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver, they’re not allowed to mention anything “mutant”-related (so if Marvel Studios ever do use those characters, they’ll most likely have to come up with different origin stories – which leads me to believe they’ll never use them until they’re able to showcase those two charcters properly)

  12. I will watch every single phase 2 movies. Gotg is going to be epic. I would really like to see the costumes from the marvel now comics that wouldn’t be the case.

  13. Thanos as a connection to both guardians of the galaxy the avengers 2 and star-lord,drax the destroy, gamora, yonda, groot rocket racoon, many other alien will be in guardians of the galaxy and thanos is best alien vilain of all time.
