Baby Groot stands on Rocket's shoulder in Guardians of the Galaxy 2.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was expected to generate a massive amount of social media buzz when it released the first teaser trailer for the highly anticipated sequel. That doesn’t mean the movie was without competition for attention from comic book and sci-fi fans, as Logan also released a trailer and both Doctor Strange and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story are nearing their release dates. It's one of the busiest times of the year for movies and movie buzz, and activity measured on social media is a reflection of that.

The teaser trailer, which has already been analyzed to the very last detail, gave fans plenty to look forward to and understandably generated plenty of social media buzz. There's still room to talk about Logan and other upcoming movies that had just released new material, but new numbers indicate that the online reach of Guardians 2 was far greater than any other movie competing with it.

According to a new report from Variety, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 not only led the way in social media buzz in the past week but dominated. Media measurement firm comScore’s “PreAct” service determined that the movie generated 108,000 new “conversations” on social media in the past week, spurred primarily by the release of the teaser trailer.

Logan generated approx. 83,000 conversations, while the soon-to-be-released Doctor Strange and Rogue One drew 39,000 and 33,000 conversations, respectively. To put these numbers in perspective, Rogue One dominated social media buzz last week with 228,000 new conversations after the release of its final trailer. Rogue One remains firmly in the lead for “cumulative conversations” in 2016 with over 1.7 million social media conversations generated.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was already known as arguably the most anticipated Marvel movie of 2017 after the smashing critical and commercial success of the original. The considerable social media buzz generated by just the first trailer bodes well for the sequel to only build more anticipation between now and its May release. The international teaser certainly helped the movie build buzz overseas, and future trailers can be expected to create similar spikes in buzz in the coming months.

It would have been daunting for any upcoming movie to compete with Rogue One buzz-wise, so it would not be shocking if the first anthology movie of the Star Wars franchise took over social media buzz after Guardians 2’s big week. But with the official release of Rogue One imminent, Guardians 2 will be poised to take over as the most anticipated summer movie, period.
