Guardians of the Galaxy writer and director James Gunn says there will be less characters in the sequel, opting to tell an original story that focuses on fleshing out existing characters. Months ago, Gunn claimed that the film was mostly cast – mainly due to the amount of returning characters – but there are a few key roles yet to be filled.
What may be the most important character part in Volume 2 that needs a Hollywood heavy hitter is that of Peter Quill a.k.a. Star-Lord’s father. If it were up to James Gunn at this very moment, it would reportedly be Kurt Russell playing the role when shooting begins in February.
With just a matter of weeks to go before principal photography begins in Atlanta on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, where James Gunn is already setup for preparations, final casting news is coming up shortly. We already learned that Pom Klementieff has joined the roster as new member of the team known as Mantis from the comics, and that Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey turned down the role of the sequel’s villain. It’s possible the unnamed antagonist is one and the same as Star-Lord’s dad given that the Ravagers (read: space pirates) of the first film dubbed him a “jackass.”
What we do know is that The Wrap has multiple insider sources who claim Kurt Russell is James Gunn’s desired choice for the jackass. The report explains that Russell has yet to read the script or get an official offer from Marvel Studios but they will be meeting “soon.”
Russell’s an interesting and exciting choice, and a fitting one for Marvel which has a history of using recognizable veteran actors to fill supporting roles. The Thor movies have Anthony Hopkins, the Captain America movies had Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Redford, the Iron Man movies had Jeff Bridges, Mickey Rourke, and Sir Ben Kingsley, and The Incredible Hulk had William Hurt.
The timing of this news coincides with the buzz for The Hateful Eight where Kurt Russell has a lead part, re-teaming with director Quentin Tarantino. 2015 has been an epic year for the veteran action star who also started his franchise stint in Furious 7 (where he’ll return for the followup) and starred in the critically adored western, Bone Tomahawk.
