According to fellow movie site bloggers and journalists who claim to have had access to certain early drafts of the script for The Avengers: Age of Ultron, there may be a few additional heroic characters from Marvel Comics getting brief, cameo introductions into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Ms. Marvel is the most common name associated with those rumors, dating back to when we first heard that Paul Bettany would be playing The Vision for the team-up sequel. We don’t know for certain which version of Ms. Marvel could show up in The Avengers, let alone if it’s true, but since we’ve heard reference to both the callsigns Ms. Marvel and Captain Marvel we can only assume it’s Carol Danvers.
See, four different characters have taken the name Ms. Marvel (Danvers was the first) in the comics and if we count all versions, seven have used the name Captain Marvel (Danvers is the most recent). Danvers was born on Earth but through the common origin story trope involving an accident, she absorbed the traits and alien DNA of the original Captain Marvel and with it, super powers. She later went on to work with The Avengers and become a full-fledged member of the roster.
In the most recent crossover story events in Marvel Comics, Danvers took on the mantle of Captain Marvel and earlier this year became a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy. The powerful female hero is both an Avenger and a Guardian, and with her background relating to the Kree aliens we just met in Guardians of the Galaxy, the character lends herself well to where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going.
Just don’t expect her to show up in Guardians of the Galaxy 2, according to writer and director James Gunn. Gunn was in Atlanta for Dragon Con over the weekend and hosted a panel with his brother Sean Gunn, who also helped work on GOTG as a motion capture reference and on-set voice for Rocket Raccoon. He also played one of the Ravagers, the right-hand to Michael Rooker’s blue-skinned Yondu character.
When we interviewed James Gunn for the release of Guardians of the Galaxy in theaters he said we can expect to see a new or potentially even a familiar character join the team roster for the sequel and that he hoped to have “at least” two female characters on the team next time around. When asked at the panel about that and whether or not there’s a chance for Carol Danvers showing up, he shut down that idea explaining that he doesn’t want to add more “earthlings” to the team to keep the Earth-based connection solely on protagonist Peter Quill (Chris Pratt). He did hint however, that fans can expect to see the character in the relative near future.
Even though the Carol Danvers version of Captain Marvel is a current member of the Guardians of the Galaxy in the comics, we need to remember that there are more than four decades worth of stories for the character before that happened. After all, we still haven’t even met the original Captain Marvel and are only one introductory step into the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There’s a long way to go still but with the Kree aliens now on the board, perhaps seeing Ms. Marvel on Earth sooner rather than later isn’t outside the realm of possibility.
In the meantime, The Avengers roster will seemingly grow by at least one female character next summer with Elizabeth Olsen’s Scarlet Witch joining the fray. As for what female character(s) James Gunn will add with Guardians of the Galaxy 2 in summer 2017, check our our own list of 12 characters we want to see in GOTG 2! And remember, Marvel Studios is listening to fan feedback about Ms. Marvel…
