It appears as though Groot will retain his Baby Groot form for the majority of the sequel, but with the Guardians being called upon to fight Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War, Groot's full-sized muscle should be needed. If this is the case, what new ideas could Marvel implement for Groot in Guardians of the Galaxy 3? Well, if the internet has its way, it could come in the form of Jennifer Lawrence playing She-Groot.
ET Canada had the chance to talk to Lawrence and her Passengers co-star Chris Pratt, who plays Star-Lord, and asked them (1:45 mark in the video above) if they were aware of a fan casting that had started. Both were made aware of the interest of Lawrence playing She-Groot (or Lady Groot depending on who you ask), and while it mainly plays out as a joke, Lawrence does say that she likes the idea of her as Groot.
The video and the fan casting is nothing more than fun and games at this point, but it wouldn't be the craziest thing for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to do. After all, Groot is supposed to be one of the only remaining members of his tree-like species, so the idea that Gunn (or whatever director tackles the third film) would try and bring more to Groot's world shouldn't be out of the question.
While this may be just fun at the moment, it would be quite surprising for Lawrence to take this hypothetical role on a few levels. First of all, she just played Mystique in the X-Men universe, and while her contract appears to be up, it would be surprising to see her jump onboard another superhero property so quickly. That said, if she was interested in joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe, hopefully they would be able to find a bigger role for her than a just a voice role that requires three words. Sure, it would be easy for her, but as one of the biggest female talents in Hollywood right now, hiding her star power with a role like this would be odd.
However, it is difficult to discount the amount of pull that Chris Pratt may have. They look as though they have had a lot of fun together filming and promoting Passengers, including trading hilarious insults with one another. If Lawrence currently or in the future has interest in joining the MCU, pairing back up with Pratt in a comedy heavy franchise like Guardians could be a great fit, especially as She-Groot.
