After the critical and financial success of Summer 2014’s film release Guardians of the Galaxy, the Guardians property from Marvel Studios has enjoyed the spotlight afforded by fan adulation and studio support, in kind. Based on a Marvel comic book series largely unknown by the general moviegoing populace, James Gunn’s live-aciton movie introduced audiences everywhere to Peter “Star-Lord” Quill and his rag-tag team of criminal outlaws (re-appropriated as the greatest superhero team the likes of which never seen before, the entire galaxy over).
Disney XD will debut a Guardians of the Galaxy animated series in Fall 2015, to help tide fans over until Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hits theaters in 2017. The Guardians cartoon show will also offer new insight into the eponymous characters backstories, beyond that featured in Gunn’s first live-action film adaptation.
Marvel Entertainment has released the first two of an announced 10-part series of shorts to provide origin stories for the Guardians of the Galaxy on the upcoming cartoon TV show. The first two animated shorts (see above and below) follow young Peter Quill as he’s whisked away on a Ravagers’ spacecraft (after leaving his dying mother back on earth), where he is confronted by various intergalactic aliens before being formally introduced to his future boss, Yondu. The backstories for Gamora, Drax, Groot, and Rocket will be explored in future shorts, too.
Watch the second part of Star-Lord’s origins story below, followed by the latest preview for the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series:
Like the Ultimate Spider-Man animated series, the new Guardians of the Galaxy cartoon serial should offer an avenue into some of the supporting mythology and back-history from the Marvel comics that Gunn’s feature films will largely brush over (in the service of their much larger narrative aims). The animation style seen in this two-part series on Quill is vibrant and lively, and should translate well to TV when Disney XD premieres the new show as a part of its new fall line-up.
Will Friedle (Boy Meets World) will provide the voice of grownup Star-Lord on the Guardians of the Galaxy animated TV series. Meanwhile, Trevor Devall (Johnny Test) is voicing Rocket Raccoon, Vanessa Marshall (Young Justice, Star Wars Rebels) is Gamora, David Sobolov (Transformers Prime) is Drax the Destroyer (a character he also voiced on Ultimate Spider-Man), and Kevin Michael Richardson (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles the cartoon series) will take over the voice role for Groot.
The Guardians of the Galaxy animated series debuts with two back-to-back episodes on Saturday, September 26th at 9:30pm ET/PT on Disney XD, with a sneak preview of the first episode airing on Saturday, September 5th at 9:00pm ET/PT.
