Marvel Studios practically dominates the film marketplace right now, alongside some of their fellow Disney-owned brethren, at least. With every new film from the studio seeming to only grow in popularity and critical praise, the studio has only gone on to expand and develop their cinematic universe in ways no one could have imagined before, including developing multiple different television series, both on ABC and with their dark, Netflix shows. However, if there's one area of the popular entertainment marketplace right now that Marvel hasn't put much effort into playing within, it's the gaming industry.

Hopefully, that's going to be changing, though, with the upcoming release of Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series. Like all of the other Telltale Games, it's set to offer fans the chance to live within the world of Guardians of the Galaxy in a way they never have before, following the characters down an original, standalone story designed specifically for the game itself.

In an interesting new development as well, GameStop's listing of the game has just revealed the official plot synopsis for it, which offers new details about the series' storyline, including teasing its main villain, and the "artifact of unspeakable power" (read: the plot's MacGuffin) that sends the whole group's lives into cosmic disarray:

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series delivers a brand new story of the universe's unlikeliest heroes, the rag-tag band of outlaws who go by the names Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot. In the wake of an epic battle, the Guardians discover an artifact of unspeakable power. Each of the Guardians has a reason to desire this relic, as does a ruthless enemy who is the last of her kind, and who will stop at nothing to tear it from their hands. From Earth to the Milano to Knowhere and beyond, and set to the beat of awesome music, this five-part episodic series puts you in the rocket-powered boots of Star-Lord in an original Guardians adventure, told in the unique and award-winning Telltale style, where your decisions and actions will drive the path of the story you experience.

Guardians of the Galaxy

The synopsis offers quite a bit more insight into the story and adventure that the new series will have to offer, especially since all that was really previously-announced was the existence of the game itself. Now, it seems like Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series will follow the ragtag group of heroes not only as they battle a powerful, ruthless female foe for possession of this mystery relic, but also could fight amongst themselves for it. There's no telling who the antagonist is, or what her species is, but it seems fair to say that the new game may just further explore the history behind the cosmic side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which up until this point, has only been briefly explored in the films and TV shows.

Right now, no details have been released about when in the Marvel timeline the new game will take place either, or what the official lineup of playable characters will be. Will Baby Groot be a member of the team? Or will it be the fully grown Groot? Odds are, the game takes place in the small window of time between the events of the first Guardians of the Galaxy and Vol. 2, which means it'll be Baby Groot - since the game is currently rumored to be released before the film right now, and Marvel will want to avoid as many possible spoilers for the sequel as they can.

All of that's just speculation and hearsay, of course, but after watching Telltale Games put out consistently worthwhile, narrative-driven content for the past several years, it's nothing short of exciting to think about what the studio might be able to do when they venture into the far reaches of the MCU, for the first time.
