Nathan Fillion Teases ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Appearance

Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer Nathan Fillion Teases Guardians of the Galaxy Appearance

Easily one of the most requested actors for the Marvel universe – especially since Joss Whedon became a part of it – is Firefly star Nathan Fillion. It makes sense in many ways, since he has had experience both as a space explorer and as a superhero (the, ahem, noble Captain Hammer), so what better place to feature him than in James Gunn’s upcoming galactic adventure Guardians of the Galaxy?

Fillion has so far starred in two of Gunn’s feature films, Slither and Super, and now he’s dropped hints about a possible cameo appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy as well. During a Firefly panel at Wizard World Comic Con last weekend, Fillion was asked by a fan whether he had wanted a part in Guardians of the Galaxy, to which he gave the cryptic reply:

“Wanting to get a part… or maybe did. I’m just saying maybe. Maybe you’ll be surprised. Maybe. Check the credits.”

On its own this is rather ambiguous, and could simply be a case of Fillion teasing fans, but CBM reports that Gunn also made comments to a similar effect, saying that the recently wrapped reshoots for Guardians of the Galaxy were for the purposes of capturing, “Anything we want, but didn’t get.. something to make the movie better… [a] cool cameo idea.”

With the scope of the Marvel universe(s) there are plenty of characters that Fillion might appear as, if he’s not just a random Nova Corps officer or space pirate. He was a popular fan choice for the role of Ant-Man, but even before that part went to Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, Fillion made it clear in an interview with IGN that he wasn’t in line to play either Hank Pym or Scott Lang.

“I’m pretty booked-up right now as far as work goes and there’s so much more going on in the entertainment industry than just, ‘Oh, you know who would be great in that?’ There’s a lot more that comes into play. There’s a lot of variables that a fan does not have to concern themselves with. If they want to see a movie and they want that actor, they’re not thinking about the variables that come into play. But there are a lot of variables that don’t make it a real possibility.”

At the time, Fillion explained that his commitment to ABC’s crime series Castle only gives him two months off each year, which isn’t nearly long enough to film a Marvel movie as a central character. However, it’s easy to imagine Gunn convincing him to do a day or two of filming for a fun cameo appearance, so keep your eyes peeled for Fillion when Guardians of the Galaxy arrives in theaters this summer.

Guardians of the Galaxy is set for release on August 1, 2014.

  1. GOOD now maybe Nathan “THE TURD” Fillion fans will shut up! ALL he could be is s ide character because HE SUCKS!! IMHO of course… but he still sucks

    • Your humble opinion sucks.

    • You have a strange definition of the word “humble”.

    • There’s people with opinions, then there’s people who are just plain wrong.

  2. I bet he is some kind of princess

  3. Hmmm, I could see him as Vance Astro perhaps

  4. Most obvious choice is Adam Warlock
Since he was chillin inside the cacoon at the end of Thor: The Dark World
Can’t wait to see Benecio del Toro in Guardians of the Galaxy

  6. Im thinking Adam Warlock as well.

  7. Adam Warlock would be awesome. He could definitely be voicing cosmo too.

  8. Green Lantern!
    *Guardians in trouble*
Guardians(all together): What do we do? We’re gonna die!
GL: Hold your t*ts, the pro is here.
*saved Guardians and flew away with Gamora in green bubble*

    • ::crickets::

  9. Even if he doesn’t show up as an established Marvel character, just have him walking around in a brown coat, and the fans will be happy.

  10. I think he would make a good villain, he does a lot of voicework so maybe he could be the voice for Thanos since he is supposed to be in it for part of the film

    • Fillion, a villain? Sheeit son, no way. He’s far too bad of an actor to be able to play a villain of any sort.

      • Opinions are a fine thing to have. But just like my opinion the sky is red, your opinion that Fillion is a bad actor is wrong. And he has played villains in the past, quite effectively too. So another sky is red moment. Google woman hating priests.

  11. What if he’s playing Mal Reynolds in a cool crossover cameo??

  12. Then someone needs to get their butt fired from Castle.

  13. I can totally see him being a random bartender at bar in Knowhere.

If he does place a Marvel hero, he’s either Astro or Warlock.

    • does play***

  14. Have they cast anyone to play Nova yet? I could see him as the cocky Richard Rider in a mid/end-credit cameo which would introduce him as another character in the Guardians sequel/stand-alone film.

    • If Dey is still alive, Rich would be a High School student. Having said that, yeah, Fillion totally looks the age.

  15. I thiink he’s gonna be Peter Quill’s dad…
But I would be shocked (in a positive way) if he’s playing Thanos or voicing Cosmo

  16. He did reunite with Whedon back in 2012 . They made that Shakespeare movie. Which nobody saw.

    • “that Shakespeare movie. Which nobody saw.” was awesome and hilarious. Fillion was highlight there.

  17. My money’s on Quill’s Father or some random background character/alien.

It would be cool if he did his cameo as Mal Reynolds though. One can hope.

  18. My guess is an end credits sting that shows him as some member of SWORD, just to link the Guardians a bit more to earth if they are to appear in Avengers 3, which seems likely. I hope he’s Quartermain, and Stana Katic is Brandt. They just seem perfect for those roles. Although, he is also perfect for J’son, Peter Quill’s Spartax dad.

  19. I’m going with Starlord’s dad or with Richard Rider the original Nova.
but in a smack to Fox it would be cool if he was Corsair of the Starjammers…

  20. Starlord’s dad. It just fits. And, on a side note, Fillion and Pratt have similar personalities. I not that, then probably a member of SHIELD. SHIELD vehicles were seen on set in bts photos of an after credits scene. Maybe a flashback when SHIELD discovers that an alien ship abducted a young boy, Peter Quill. Or he’s a member of SWORD. Head of SWORD. A SHIELD affiliated organization free of Hydra interference.

  21. Reallly cool. Wish he wud be playing cosmo..
    The dream…wud be Warlock…
The insanely cool dream…wud be a Firefly crossover… Like Quill’s ship bumping into Firefly…

    • Was that English??

  22. So much hate from a few of you. What sad pathetic lives you lived LMAO.

  23. How insane would it be if he crawled out of that cocoon in a post credits stinger?!?!?!?!

    • What if the side of the cocoon busted open, and a butt stuck out and dooked on the floor…

  24. Awesome!!

  25. Nathan Fillon has a cameo where he comes in to water the tree-man and feed the raccoon a butter cookie.

  26. Thanos!

  27. please tell me they are introducing Captain Hammer to the MCU
because then DR Horrible cant be far behind… *GASP* Thanos = bad horse??

  28. i really hope he gets the role in the bio pic they are making of Idris Elba….
