A photo of Zoe Zaldana taken from the early days of Guardians of the Galaxy reveals that Gamora was originally pegged to have green eyes. In the MCU, Gamora is an orphan girl who was adopted and raised by Thanos after killing half of her planet's race. Knowing that Thanos is out to purge half of the universe, she rebels and joins Peter Quill, Rocket, Groot, and Drax to form the original Guardians of the Galaxy. In Avengers: Infinity War, Thanos captures Gamora and sacrifices her in Vormir in order to obtain the Soul Stone. However, an alternate and older version of the skilled assassin is brought to the existing timeline in Avengers: Endgame.

Zaldana is set to reprise her role in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Because this alternate version of Gamora didn't live through the events of the previous Guardians movies, it's interesting to see how her story fits into Phase 4 of the MCU. Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is scheduled for a 2023 release. Along with Zaldana, the original cast members are all confirmed to be returning with Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, and Pom Klementieff reprising their respective roles. While there's still a long wait, the franchise's cast has been treating people to throwback pics and behind-the-scenes trivia.

Zaldana shared a set photo from 2014's Guardians of the Galaxy and revealed that director James Gunn originally wanted Gamora to have green eyes that match her skin color. The picture was taken from one of the movie's early camera tests. Ultimately, the director changed his mind and the superhero's eye color took after Zaldana's natural dark brown. According to the 42-year-old actress, she was relieved because she found the colored contact lenses to be "so uncomfortable." Check out her post below:

In her post, Zaldana gave props to her co-stars Dave Bautista and Karen Gillan, who played Drax the Destroyer and Nebula in the film series. Because the two characters sported different eye colors, the actors had to endure contact lenses for hours while filming. Zaldana said her co-stars were real pros and brought their characters to life with their amazing performances.

Zaldana's throwback photo comes as the cast and crew prepare to film Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. While Marvel has been careful not to spoil the highly anticipated movie, many fans have speculated on the third installment's plot and Gamora's role. The last time viewers saw her in Avengers: Endgame, her alternate version quietly fled the battle scene after defeating Thanos. Because her whereabouts are unknown, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 will likely see the Guardians, led by Peter Quill (Pratt), search the galaxy for the assassin-turned-superhero. However, because this version of Gamora is from an older timeline, she doesn't know the group and may even be opposed to joining them again.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 poses to be a crucial film for the franchise. With Gunn exiting the directorial job after the third film, it is thought that the movie's plot will drastically change the future of the funny group of superheroes. Will it re-introduce Gamora as a villain, or will the story find a way to reverse her death? The film's release is two long years from now, but knowing how Marvel weaves its stories, fans will surely be able to pick up bits of clues in the upcoming MCU movies.
