gotg Kevin Feige Talks Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange & Marvel Phase Three

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is about to enter Phase Two with the imminent release of Iron Man 3. Tony Stark’s latest adventure may be faced with higher expectations following The Avengers, but by far the riskiest film of the bunch will be Guardians of the Galaxy.

Featuring a set of characters largely unknown to most moviegoers, the film has been rapidly coming together in anticipation of its 2014 release. Thus far, Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista and possibly Zoe Saldana are leading the film’s cast, with the story set to take place almost entirely in space. It will mark the first and only non-sequel of Phase Two, and its performance will likely affect Marvel’s willingness to take chances with its future film projects.

Kevin Feige, producer and head of Marvel Studios, recently spoke to Italian magazine Best Movie (via Comic Book Movie) about why the studio decided to add Guardians to the Phase Two roster:

“[For a] long time that we wanted to bring in a movie and adventure set entirely in space. We immediately liked the idea of making a movie based on a comic mostly unknown by people [...] that present[ed] various superheroes in one movie.

“Although it’s set up from another part of the universe, a human will be in a superhero role of Peter Quill, played by Chris Pratt. There will be lots of characters: from a sexy warrior to an animated tree [to] a raccoon with a gun. It’s a unique franchise and we are pleased that it’s so different from what we have done so far.”

With Guardians among the last Phase Two entries to go into production, Marvel has already begun looking ahead at Phase Three. According to Feige, at least some of the established characters will re-appear in the form of additional sequels.

“Currently, the third phase is still developing. 99.9% of our time is used for Phase 2, the development of ‘The Avengers 2′ and the ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ keeps us very busy. Definitely we’re not leaving aside the old glories and we can also see familiar faces such as Iron Man, Thor and Captain America.”

However, fans shouldn’t expect just more of the same, as several new heroes will be brought to life as well, including Edgar Wright’s long-discussed Ant-Man film. Feige, for one, is more excited about adding another much-anticipated hero to the mix.

Dr. Strange Marvel Movie Kevin Feige Talks Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange & Marvel Phase Three

“Dr. Strange! I love the aura of mystery that surrounds this superhero and the magical world that surrounds him. We’ve never faced anything like this and there is a lot of material that we could exploit. I would love to also see a new superhero in the ranks of the Avengers. We shall see!”

Phase Three isn’t scheduled to come around until after the release of The Avengers 2 in May 2015, and Dr. Strange has not yet officially received a release date. In the meantime, fans have several new Marvel projects to anticipate.

Which upcoming Marvel film are you most looking forward to, and what new heroes would you like to see added to Phase Three? Let us know in the comments section.

Iron Man 3 releases May 3rd, 2013, Thor: The Dark World on November 8th, 2013, Captain America: The Winter Soldier on April 4th, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1st, 2014, The Avengers 2 on May 1st, 2015, Ant-Man on November 6th, 2015, and Doctor Strange sometime after that.

  1. They need more girls on the team. Ms. Marvel (I guess Captain Marvel) would be great, or Janet. BP hasn’t been ignored, he is owned by someone else, not marvel, whoever produced that 6 episode mini for BET owns the rights to him for now.

There was talk of Viggo for the Doctor, I think that would be awesome.

    • Marvel does have the rights for BP. Animation has nothing to do with the movie rights. Hence Spider-Man´s and Wolverine´s appearence in the Avengers cartoon.

    • yah they def need to get ms marvel and wasp on the team

  2. All the cosmic stuff is OK but my personal interest in the Marvel Universe has always been more at a street level. I hope Marvel do try some movies on a less fantastic scale, I’d love to see Daredevil, Punisher, Ghost Rider, Moon Knight, etc done properly. Obviously Spider Man is out of the window until such time as they can reclaim the rights but maybe Blade could be redone now. They could build up a Marvel Knights movie in much the same way as they did with the Avengers – THAT would be of more interest to me than Guardians Of The Galaxy or Ant Man.

    • I would love a marvel knights universe. Good call on that one mate.

    • I agree. I’m disappointed they are largely ignoring the “Earth Based” movies. Daredevil, Moon Knight, Punisher, and the Heroes for Hire crew would be far beyond GOTG. But, we will most likely never see them tied into the universe. Ghost Rider could have been so great. Oh well, I’ll take what I can get, I guess.

  3. I think Phase 3 will be a nice place to introduce Captain Marvel. Phase 2 will go cosmic and it’s the best place to start going towards Mar-vell and then Carol Danvers.

More ladies are needed, but I am confident the Wasp will come along with Ant-Man. Maybe Mockingbird could be added somewhere.

Black Panther would also be nice.

I am very happy that Doctor Strange movie is coming.

And for now I am the most excited about IM3 and Thor 2, but I think that’s only because those come first. I am hyped for the whole Phase 2 to be honest. GotG promises to be awesome.

  4. Far too much to take in and remember for a non-comic reader.

    • It’s ok. I’m sure they’ll dumb things down a bit -err, I mean “simplify” it for them… unfortunately.

  5. Black Panther would be great for phase three.
I am really looking forward to Ant Man and Dr. Strange. I would be very happy with another Iron Man thrown in as well!!

Marvel continued to lead the way!!!! Great time to be a CBM fan!!!

    • Dr Strange is ok, AntMan is Meh, Black Panther is lame. I would prefer a Howard the Duck movie and seeing him join the Avengers

      • Howard the Duck was done and done badly already.

        • Captain America, Hulk, Superman and Batman had been done badly also and they seemed like they got over it. A really grounded take on Howard the Duck could be interesting. He could have some cool dialogues with Tony.

          • Please tell me you’re trolling. In what universe is Howard the Duck better than Black Panther? Because it certainly ain’t the Marvel Universe.

            • While Black Panther maybe interesting to some, he’s not to other… probably most people infact. Howard the Duck has a comedic element to him that “could” reach a much wider audience. Just think of the possibilities, Howard the Duck vs Rocket Raccoon! Sorry, that’s 1000 times cooler then BP in any universe.

              • @JediGuy1138

I totally agree with Your Mom, that would be an awesome combo and they already had the talking raccoon so a duck could fit perfectly in there.

            • Howard the duck is awesome if done right, besides I’m sure that his attitude could collide pretty nicely with Cap’s

            • If they can have a talking racoon, why not a talking duck?

              • Great !! Donald Duck meets the Marvel Universe!! Awesome!! I’ll keep my cash

                • That would be Scrooge McDuck if you’re talking cash. He swims in it. I’m Donald Ducking it right now around my house. I lost my pants.

  6. Tegardless of waht people think of Ant-man as a superhero.. Henry Pym had contributed something pivotal to the MU… He gave “birth” to Ultron.

  7. That must’ve hurt.

    • He had good child bearing hips.

  8. I would love to see She-Hulk introduced at some point, as well as Luke Cage and Jessica Jones. Black Panther would be cool, but I struggle to see how they would introduce him and Wakanda without it feeling forced. I agree there needs to more ladies introduced too. Hopefully Ant-man movie will bring in Wasp and even though X-Men is owned by another studio, hopefully that doesn’t mean Marvel won’t be able to bring in Scarlet Witch (and Quiksilver) a some point too. That would work well in Phase 3, if they’re bringing in Dr Strange. Scarlet Witch could be shown to be a bit hippy-dippy leading to mental instability, which Dr Strange could be trying to help her with. Maybe it’s her fault Hulk gets stuck in monster form and goes on the rampage leading into the Planet Hulk & World War Hulk? Just an idea

  9. chris pratt is wrong for the role , he will make this movie fail. david strathairn would be the perfect dr strange .

    • Chris Pratt is usually only known for his comedic roles (Parks and Recreation, 5 Year Engagement) but he’s also been in other movies such as Moneyball (Drama) and Zero Dark 30 (Action/Drama). He’s actually a pretty good actor and if there’s one thing that Marvel are good at, its casting. Some people may not agree with all their casting choices, but the majority of fans and viewers (like myself) have been pleased so far.

I agree that this is probably the riskiest movie so far in the MCU but that just means that Marvel will be so much more cautious to get it done right.

  10. OH PLEASE DON’T DO BLACK PANTHER!!!!! BP is sooooo lame that I rather had seen the Nic Cage version of Superman.

    • Why do you think he’s lame?

      • They had already said that he is like a black batman isn’t he? kind of like the African Batman, Batwing?

        • Well saying “Black Panther is like the black Batman” is totally wrong. That’s not my opinion, that’s a fact. The black Panther simply isn’t the black version of Batman. There are similarities, yes, but there are also a LOT of differences. When you’re dealing with two superhero/comic book companies that strive to create interesting and diverse characters, you’re most definitely going to get SOME
          Besides, Batman is frickin awesome.
…so, I’ll ask again, what does Chad think Black Panther is lame?

          • Man Black Panther IS sick!! Everyone I kno wants to see BP happen. Not Lame at all, they jus have to cast it correctly. But he is somewhat like Batman tho his detective skills are on point like batman’s and they both thrive in the night. I think y’all jus hatin on BP (Black People) lol

There are similarities, yes, but there are also a LOT of differences. When you’re dealing with two rival comic book publishers who strive to create interesting and diverse characters, you’re most definitely going to get SOME things that certain characters have in common.

…so, I’ll ask again, what does Chad think Black Panther is lame?

          • Sorry for the double post… Dunno what happened there.

            • Black Panther can be a little lame, when he is deep in the tribal affairs. I liked him when he took over in Hells Kitchen. I think that a BP movie could really swing wildly either way. Either it will blow our minds or leave us lacking.

  11. Honestly right now I’m just pumped for Iron Man 3. That’s basically it. But Cpt. A 2 looks promising and Ant-Man sounds very intriguing. I’m not even that big of an iron man fan! the first one was meh. the second was more entertaining meh. the first didn’t have enough action, the second was too colorful. BUT Kingsley as the Mandarin? Iron Man ACTUALLY being a superhero for once and saving normal people (plane falling), and Extremis??? YES PLEASE. the trailer looks freakin epic too, the scene with Downey Jr. and the machine gun, OMG.

So most anticipated movies of the summer?

    1. Iron Man 3
    2. Man of Steel
    3. After Earth

  12. It would be great to have Luke Cage and Iron Fist Movie. I think Ryan Gosling would be a great Iron Fist and bring in the General Audience.

  13. Anyone who says Black Panther is just like Batman has automatically revealed themselves to not know anything about the character. The only similarity is a surface-level similarity to certain elements of their costumes. All black suit, pointy ears….that’s about it. Everything else about Black Panther and Batman is different.

    • Not really because their both kings to an empire, they face similar delimas and are more political characters. And Raccoons are just Way more beastier animals then Ducks. Yea he’s witty and comical but meh! :/

      • Actually, Black Panther is very similar to Batman. They are both genius crime fighters who are inspired by the death of a parent(s). BP has the spiritual element and the supposed power of the Panther God, but he relies mainly on martial arts and technology.

  14. Ant-Man and Dr. Strange is what I a talking about! I am ready for these films! Love to see Dr.Strange kinda be bridge between a Marvel Cinematic Universe and maybe a Marvel Knights Universe that would include Daredevil, The Punisher, Moon Knight, Elektra, andBlack Widow could also be seen in this part of Marvel Knights universe as there is a history with Daredevil.

  15. Jason mamoa and Chris Pratt would have played a fine Quill and Drax respectively. Mamoa is not the best of actors but Pratt would have encouraged a one upmanship dynamic with Mamoa, which would have reflected positively on screen. Bautista is too old and low budget for the destroyer of Thano

  16. Gamora (zoe saldana) is decribed as a sexy warriordoes this mean it will be more adult?

  17. Disney has the money. They should (and can) just buy the Marvel character rights from Fox, Sony, etc. Marvel must consolidate all of their characters if they even hope to continue past Phase 3 or Phase 4. The X-men, the Fantastic Four, Spiderman…they are all too important.

  18. They should probably do a Silver Surfer movie to introduce him and Galactus, so they can later use them for Avengers 3 or 4.
