Benicio Del Toro as Lado in Savages Benicio Del Toros Guardians of the Galaxy Character Revealed?

James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy has racked up a number of cast members already, but garnering specifics on exactly who everyone is playing has proved to be a little more difficult. A few of the lead roles are concrete – Zoe Saldana will be Gamora, Dave Bautista will be Drax the Destroyer, and Chris Pratt will be Peter Quill A.K.A. Star-Lord – but for most of the other announcements, all we have are actors’ names with a lot of speculation attached.

One thing’s for sure: the Guardians won’t want for adversaries. Doctor Who‘s Karen Gillan has reportedly been cast in a villain role, joining Pushing Daisies star Lee Pace and the recently-announced Benicio Del Toro. It’s more or less confirmed that Thanos will be involved in the plot somehow, but it’s uncertain whether he’ll be at the forefront of the film’s dark forces or if the heroes will instead be facing off against one of his subordinates or rivals.

According to a “reliable source” at Comic Book Movie, Del Toro will be playing Taneleer Tivan A.K.A. The Collector. It became public knowledge that Tivan would feature in the film when Ophelia Lovibond joined the cast and it was revealed that she would be playing an aide to The Collector, but our guesses for Del Toro’s role were that he would either be playing Ronan the Accuser or Thanos.

Since Del Toro is contracted to appear in multiple installments within Phase Two and Three of the Marvel cinematic universe, it seems that The Collector will be one of the recurring villains, not unlike Loki (Tom Hiddleston).

The Collector Marvel comics Benicio Del Toros Guardians of the Galaxy Character Revealed?

For those not familiar with the comics, The Collector’s name is quite an apt one. He’s an immortal with billions of years under his belt who, like many old people, takes up a hobby in order to keep himself from going insane. The effectiveness therein is debatable, as while The Collector does collect useful or powerful artifacts from across the galaxy, he also frequently attempts to collect people – including The Avengers and other heroes of the Marvel universe – for ‘safekeeping’. And you thought your grandmother’s shelf of ceramic dogs was bad…

Keep in mind that this isn’t an official announcement from any named member of the Guardians of the Galaxy cast or creative team. However, CBM seem pretty confident in their source, and Del Toro could be an excellent fit for the role.

Plus, a multiple-film deal for the man who’s going to play The Collector makes a certain amount of sense. After all, in the comics, The Collector is canonically immune to Thanos’ girlfriend, Death (though admittedly most comic book characters have trouble dying with any kind of permanence), which presumably means he could be involved in an Avengers 2 or 3.

Take a look at the assembled cast and rumors for Guardians of the Galaxy, and let us know if you can figure out a possible story for the Guardians’ first adventure.

Guardians of the Galaxy is out in theaters on August 1st, 2014.

  1. Yes indeed! Cool beans!

  2. This is going to be so awesome, I think this just might be THE Marvel movie… at least until Avengers 2 comes out.

  3. I’m honestly glad he isn’t Thanos. I want a Thanos with a regal, yet militant voice, like someone who believes themselves are superior. Honestly I think Alan Rickman voicing a CGI Thanos is the best choice. His snootiness would be perfect.

  4. Rather see him as Black Bolt then Thanos.

  5. Well, we already saw Thanos in The Avengers so I’m glad they’re not recasting him. Dunno where that rumour came from.

    • Adam Sandler has been rumored for the role of Thanos sadly, Marvel says they see his full potential in acting for the future of their own benefits.

      • Yeah right… link?

      • ‘You Don’t Mess With The Thanos’

    • He had like 3 seconds exposure in the Avengers. All they needed that time was a stand- in. For the film where he actually appears and impacts the plot directly, we’ll need a real actor.

      • If he wasn’t deceased, Michael Clark Duncan would have been great.

        • Agreed 1000%

    • Nice try. 3/10

  6. Had my hopes up for Thanos, but oh well…

  7. Isn’t it Opheila Lovibond?

  8. Wow, they are digging into the Elders of the Universe now? I don’t know how much exposure these characters have gotten, but they were pretty obscure after the late 80′s.

    • Good, then maybe no one will b!tch if they change up the character a little bit ;)

      • I think I still have the comic where the Champion of the Universe challenged a bunch of heroes to a boxing match, and the Contest of Champions mini-series. Last time I remember seeing the Elders Galactus tried to eat them and almost died….

        • …and Champion had the power gem, and Thanos STILL beats him.

        • @Slayer, Yeah, that was great and the only one that kept coming was Ben Grim aka The Thing.

  9. The Watcher better be in Avengers 3.

I wonder if we will see a little bit of The Thanos Quest in the side lines to this movie. Seeing that all the Infinity Gems are already together with the Gauntlet in Odin’s Vault, The Collector should be obtaining it (hopefully in end credit scene for Thor 2) OR maybe he has a device that will take you to it. You never know.

    • It’ll be revealed at the end of all the Marvel movies that Stan Lee was the Watcher all along.

      • LOL…that was the buildup with all those cameo appearances all along :D

    • The thing about the infinity gautlet in Ofin’s vault is that the gems on it weren’t exactly glowing or emanating powers. They could very well simply be stand ins for the real things. Ofin could have simply taken the gauntlet to prevent the unification of said gauntlet with the various gems. Just a thought.

      • Good call.

      • Agreed. But you mean Odin not Ofin right?

  10. That would be a very good role for him and it would make sense for ‘The Collector’ to have more than one appearances. He’s definitely not a one-movie villain.

Guardians is really shaping up to an amazing movie! Not that I doubted it for a second, I was excited about from the very start :D

    • @ Granado

If you really must promote an excremental Star Trek rap, how about sending it to Geek Picks instead of repeatedly spamming it up on totally unrelated threads?

      • +1

  11. So he is essentially Brainiac. Got it.

    • Lol pretty much. But weirder, and insane-ish. And he doesn’t miniaturize his collections. Think he’s got a whole planet or something full of “preserved artifact/beings” in his collection.

    • Brainiac has been portrayed to be responsible for a lot of different things but it always leads to his desire to obtain all knowledge in the universe, the fact that he was “collecting” small cities was not to preserve the civilizations; it was to ensure he absorbed all their knowledge.

Closer in comparison are DC’s the Auctioneer (who obtained powerful items to auction off) and the Preserver (as the name implies wanted to preserve rare creatures). Both of which are partial copies of Marvel’s the Collector.

  12. I thought Amy Pond was going to be in Captain America 2??

  13. The Collector “collects” beings and artifacts of other worlds because a very long time ago, he had a vision that certain beings would rise up, determined to destroy the universe. Now one of beings is Michael Korvac who is rumored to be played by Lee Pace. His wife is Carina, daughter of The Collector and rumored to be played by Ophelia Lovibond. At the very least, she is said to be an aide to The Collector. The other being of course is Thanos. If the Collector is in multiple films, it is very likely he’s involved with whatever the hell the Avengers are doing in Avengers 2 and perhaps Avengers 3 as well. If Korvac is the villain Whedon is talking about, I can see why he’s so excited. Rob Keyes referred to most of this in an article last month I think. However, there’s more. Thanks to a Thor: The Dark World prelude comic that came out just this Tuesday, we now know that the Badoon exists in Marvel’s cinematic universe. There’s much more in the comic but I’ll leave that out. Anyway, thanks to Thor’s destruction of the bifrost, the Badoon are in a state of civil war and “eventually will spread their savagery and bloodlust from one planet to the next.” Those familiar with Korvac’s story know the role the Badoon plays in it.

    • Good info!

    • Fantastic post….i didnt know Pace was getting Korvac rumors. Last i heard it was thought he might be an eventual Nova.
Either way, this movie is building up to be pretty epic.

    • Whoa, I will be super-jazzed if they bring the Korvac stories into this. Korvac is one of the absolute best Avengers villains.

    • @ J. Carter

      Terrific post!!!

  14. collector sounds like a pretty cool villain

  15. The Collector… I bet he’d like to get inside Odin’s vault. “Watch out for the Destroyer, Benicio!”

  16. I can’t stop thinking about Comic-book guy from the Simpson’s.

    • Best… Simpsons character… EVER!

  17. Hey, if The Collector collects beings, including aliens, if he came down to the Tex-Mex/Arizonz border region, he could collect all the illegal aliens and take them away….one problem solved!

    {If he comes to Wal-mart, where I work, & he can collect all the grumpy bosses & haul ‘em off, too, and make himself a hero among the common worker!!}

  18. Benicio is going to bring that creepy feel to the film like every other film he is in. He is just awesome

  19. Excellent actor, excellent news! The Collector, very cool!

  20. I would love to see The High Evolutionary, and Ultron take on the AVENGERS nEXT AND MAYBE HAVE eNCHATRESS MESSING WITH THE HEROES HEADS A BIT.

  21. Oh man, did you eat all that acid?? You evil son of a b****, you better hope there’s some thorazine in that bag, because if there’s not you’re in bad trouble tomorrow.

    • +1
Fear & Loathing you’ve gotta love it :)

      • Damn right! Looks like Disney will own everyone from Fear and Loathing now. Maybe buy the rights to Dr. Thompson and make taking drugs kid friendly.

  22. Just announce Peter Cullen as Groot and Jim Carrey as Rocket Raccoon and were golden. Would really be an excellent cast if they closed it out with that. Ever since the rumor of Carrey as Rocket Iv been pretty sold on it; he can change his voice to fit any character perfectly(he’s done it many times) and he’s hilarious. I think he would be great as RR.

Chris Pratt Zoe Saldana Dave Bautista Peter Cullen Jim Carrey John C. Reily with Glenn Close and Benicio Del Toro

Imagine that roster at the top of a poster. Would be a great and unique cast.

    • Cept for Jim Carrey withdrawling his promo cred for Kick-Ass 2.

He won’t be a “gun-toting” Raccoon, any time soon.

Also, he’s “never heard of Guardians” ordering to the answer to the question when he was doing press for [insert movie title here] at [insert date here].

You can look up the debunked rumor on GotG wikipedia [talk] section.

  23. I don’t want someone like Korvac to be someone understudy (Avengers #177,he took on at least 20? Avengers + GotG).

I would love if they incorporate ‘The Thanos Quest’ w/GotG movie.

  24. i want ADAM WARLOCK!!!! ….and Keanu (the One) Reeves is perfect for Him!!!
