Marvel was successful in its attempt to make Guardians of the Galaxy a viable brand. The movie was a box office hit (with a highly anticipated sequel, Vol. 2, due out in 2017), which has spawned this animated series spinoff – and even the film’s soundtrack went on to become a chart-topping hit. Needless to say, the Guardians have truly earned their title as ‘Marvel’s cosmic Avengers.‘
However, until director James Gunn is done crafting Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 for theatrical release, the Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series will be filling the void. Today we have the full rollout schedule for the animated series, which will be first previewed through a series of shorts and a sneak peek, before the hour-long series premiere this fall. All of this comes before San Diego Comic-Con 2015 kicks off, where we expect Marvel animation to preview GoTG: TAS, along with new material from their other animated series.
Via IGN, here is the full premiere rollout for the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series:

o Encore presentation of “Road to Knowhere” followed by “Knowhere to Run.” In “Knowhere to Run,” the Guardians struggle to subdue the suddenly-sprung-to-life Celestial head that is the Knowhere space colony, as well as storm Korath’s ship to rescue Quill, Gamora and the mysterious CryptoCube that holds the Cosmic Seed.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27
• Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy available to WATCH Disney XD users on WATCHDisneyXD.com and the WATCH Disney XD app for smartphones, tablets and connected TVs.
The series follows the newly-formed team who finds a strange artifact keyed only to the DNA of Peter Quill. Upon opening it, Quill unleashes a treasure map leading to a powerful weapon known as the Cosmic Seed which is capable of giving birth to the next universe. It’s up to the Guardians to find, protect and ultimately destroy the Cosmic Seed in order to keep it out of the hands of those who would abuse its power, from galactic big boss Thanos, to the conniving brothers the Collector and the Grandmaster, to a resurrected Ronan, to the ultimate trickster, Loki, in order to save the universe.”
For those wondering about continuity, the Guardians of the Galaxy animated series will operate in much the same way that Marvel’s Avengers Assemble cartoon series does: a show that’s in the spirit of the movie continuity, but not directly connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe like, say, Star Wars Rebels is to the larger Star Wars canon. That allows the animated series to appeal more to a Disney XD demographic (i.e., kids) without getting the older fanbase up in arms about continuity decisions like “a resurrected Ronan” or where Loki is, exactly, when the Guardians cross paths with him. Or, more importantly: how the animated series events would setup the epic Avengers: Infinity War crossover film. That’s a lot of continuity knots that are best avoided.
Truthfully, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 already has pretty big ground to cover regarding Peter Quill’s DNA and parentage, while still developing the cosmic threats that will eventually show up on earth’s doorstep. That’s enough of a challenge for director James Gunn to deliver on; so for more carefree fantastical and fun adventures, there will be this animated series.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Animated Series will have its hour-long premiere on Saturday, September 26th, on Disney XD @9:30 EST.
