Adam Warlock is making a comeback for the Marvel Legacy relaunch. The character, who had a central role in many of Marvel's biggest events, will return with a mysterious mission in an upcoming issue of Guardians of the Galaxy.

Adam Warlock has been a major player in Marvel Comics for decades. In several cosmic conflicts including Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War, and Infinity Crusade, the Golden Gladiator has been the chief protagonist, despite the inclusion of more popular heroes like Spider-Man, Wolverine, and Captain America. However, Adam Warlock's importance in the Marvel Universe began to wane as the character has had limited appearances in the last few years and hasn't had much of an impact on major events.

Marvel Legacy will pave the way for the character's return in Guardians of the Galaxy #150, the first chapter in a new storyline titled, "The Return of Adam Warlock." Marvel has released details for the upcoming story:

Adam Warlock is returning to the galaxy…but the mystery surrounding his return remains. Is he here for the Infinity Stones? Has he come to take them back for himself? The Infinity Stone saga continues in GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY #150: THE RETURN OF ADAM WARLOCK PART 1, written by Gerry Duggan with art by Marcus To & Aaron Kuder.

It's currently unclear what Warlock's return will mean for the Marvel Universe or for the team. Warlock was a founding member of Star-Lord's Guardians of the Galaxy, but the character's time with the team came to an end when he was killed off, though he has since been resurrected. The new storyline could set the stage for Warlock to rejoin the team. It could also lead to another dramatic clash over the Infinity Stones with Warlock's longtime rival, Thanos.

It makes perfect sense for the Infinity Stones to be wrapped up in Warlock's return. The Soul Stone was in Warlock's head for years, giving him a vampire-like ability to absorb souls. Haunted by its vampire-like capabilities, Warlock struggled to avoid abusing its powers for years. Warlock also gained omnipotence after defeating Thanos and putting on the Infinity Gauntlet. With all six stones in his possession, Warlock was nearly consumed by the limitless power they gave him, making him a character who understands the dangers of the Infinity Stones more than most.

Though news of Adam Warlock's return will certainly delight fans, it's not necessarily a huge surprise, especially considering that the character was teased in a post-credits scene for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and is expected to appear in later films.
