Guardians of the Galaxy co-writer/director James Gunn revealed at an E3 talk on Tuesday that he had already completed the first draft of the treatment for Guardians of the Galaxy 3

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 proved that the success of the original Guardians film was no fluke, as the sequel was a solid hit with critics and a massive one with audiences at the box office. With the misfit band of intergalactic "A-holes" set to team up with the Avengers in the upcoming Infinity War, their next solo outing may seem a bit far away. Despite this break between sequels, that hasn't stopped Gunn from starting serious work on the third installment.

During a conference at E3 celebrating a handful of "World Builders" like Gunn and astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson, the writer and director of both Guardians films revealed that he was well ahead of schedule in developing the third film. In fact, Gunn already has a very early first draft of the script treatment ready for scrutinizing and editing.

"I'm writing Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and I finished the first draft of the treatment yesterday. I'm excited about it. I feel really great about it."

Answering the question from panel moderator Chris Hardwick, Gunn naturally had few details of what was included within the treatment. However, he did reveal to the audience that he may change a piece of MCU continuity that he had established in the original Guardians film, with Vol. 3.

There are a lot of different directions that the sequel could go in, but it's clear that Gunn has a vision in the making. What that direction is remains a mystery for now, particularly knowing that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2 takes place only six months after the original film - meaning that four years will have passed when we see the team in Infinity War. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and the creative team behind Infinity War have been clear that the Guardians will still be the wisecracking antiheroes that audiences have come to love in Infinity War, they have also acknowledged that there will be recognizable changes in the Guardians' makeup during the crossover event.

By the end of Vol 2., the Guardians themselves had further come together as an oddball familial unit. Rocket and Peter Quill have gone through some major character development, and they've added Ego's empathic "stepdaughter" Mantis and Gamora's formerly villainous sister Nebula to the mix. One of the Vol. 2 post-credit scenes spells danger for the Guardians, however, as the leader of the Sovereign people Ayesha is show building a being that will become Adam Warlock, in an attempt to destroy them. Gunn has also teased that hero Quasar will be involved in Vol 3 in some way.

No release date is set for Guardians of the Galaxy 3but expect it to come sometime after the untitled fourth Avengers movie in 2019.
